Congratulations on the Pablos (Hope you had a great birthday). There seems to be a dislike of the Pablo pencil in coloring world. Not sure why. No, it's not a creamy waxy pencil that "smooshes together" but then neither are the Polychromos. I've found them to be one of the most highly pigmented pencils out there that makes blending and layering very easy. I started out with an 18-pencil set and despite being a beginner, I was creating new colors and layering gradients easily.

And I always mess up swatching because I find it so relaxing I just zone out! And end up putting something in the wrong spot. Or I don't pay attention when it says Ultramarine and then Ultramarine Dark.
