    Greetings from England, I am growing various vegetables in my bought fabric pots but now I want to make the bags myself. I have made plastic pots with my sewing machine very successfully. So many Utube videos say use non-woven landscape fabric. The trouble is knowing which one - there are so many options. Could you please enlighten me as to what exactly should use. I rather like the felt type. Thanks

      It's all the from the same factory in China lol. Just get one the color you like but I guess "weight" would be a factor as well, I've seen 300g and 600g. I just got the 34 buck roll from amazon 3x100 I think worked great. I've even seen newer designs with just the bottom and like 10% of the side bottom being a breathable area and the rest had a layer of plastic type stuff that was all the way up the inside wall to retain water in more harsh climates. Much better to make 1000 gallon pots than to buy them that's for sure haha

    i have a weird hoa and i can't have anything on the ground to catch the water from my grow bags so i developed a semi self-wicking system to prevent moisture & nutrient loss from my plants. i have discovered aluminum foil dutch oven liners. they go into the bottom of my bags filled with coco coir with a pvc pipe exposed at the top. i don't need to worry about watering during the throes of ridiculous heat waves. i made the watering pipes tall enough that there is no bending over now and my coco coir doesn't become hydrophobic when the heat gets extreme.

    Because structural root engineering takes place first two years along with temporary Tap Root production which commonly by third year starts producing lateral roots . Never grow trees expected to provide a 50-year or more Problem free service life in a container for more than two years regardless if pot fabric bag or some other new titillating invention.
    In fact best method is transforming back into bare root transplant which allows pruning out any deflected or circling roots as everything should be growing radially outbound away from tree.

    I have a lemon tree that is planted in a very large plastic pot. I live in Las Vegas. Would the lemon tree do better in a cloth pot? I’m concerned the tree can get root bound. It struggles already without being root bound. I just repotted it this winter.

    Great content on your channel thank you... have had a few laughs also. With regard to the fruit trees in grow bags, what growing medium do you use? The avocado tree appears to be in perlite only (or at least a high percentage of perlite). As perlite is so light weight, do you find it provides adequate anchorage for the tree? Are the trees hydroponic also? Thanks

    • @greenhousesolutions1074
      @greenhousesolutions1074  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Video on trees coming soon. Avocado tree came with soil around the roots. Left the soil, treated with H2O2 to kill any possible "bad stuff", and filled the rest with perlite. It is light and you are correct. When the trees get larger, they need some sort of support if they are not balanced. We are now also using perlite/coco coir mix and is more stable.

    • @rweb-dh9pf
      @rweb-dh9pf ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think that's true. There's tons of studies that prove that root depth is generally in the top 2' of the soil. There are of course a wide range of root depth based on soil types, and its generally a matter of void spaces. Sandier soils will generally have trees with deeper root systems, because air can penetrate. For silty/clay soils, air can't really penetrate more than a couple feet, so that's where the roots are.

    Hi, Thanks for all of the useful info. I THINK I love grow-bags too? but maybe not the way I’ve used them!
    Here’s my situation followed by my question - I really hope you can help!
    Location: Zone 6 a in a garden courtyard, full sun, not much protection, overlooking Lake Huron.
    What I’ve done: I had four 6 foot, Star Magnolia trees planted in bottomless wood boxes 34” X 34” X 3ft high to gain instant height. Boxes are lined with 1” foam insulation and a X X large grow bag that I snipped holes into the bottom for faster drainage + to promote roots joining earth at ground level. Ideally, I would like to leave them in these boxes for ever.
    So far: The trees have made it through a colder than usual winter. There are furry buds are all over.
    Question: was I lucky? Will the trees become stressed as they grow bigger? Will the roots find their way to the earth below? OR, should I demolish my gorgeous boxes, which anchor my courtyard and pergola to save the trees? I must confess I have been writing my hands over this. *I got the idea from Bunny Guinness - not her fault! She gardens in the UK, which has much milder winters.
    Thank you in advance!
    Susan in Ontario’s West Coast

      @incanada83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sunny, from what I know star magnolias are good to zone 4. Since you plant them in bottomless boxes, they will grow into into the dirt, and spread out. The roots, although shallow, are way wider than its canopy. It's budding, so it must be "happy". Just top dress with compost and it should be fine. However, if you need professional help, take a picture and go to your local garden center and ask there.
      That's what I would do even though there are many helpful videos on YT, many are from different zones and some garden supplies cannot be bought in Canada or Ontario (a small examples...neem oil is, powder gypsum, powder bone meal etc.) Good luck :-)

    • @Sunny-uz9td
      @Sunny-uz9td 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I’m feeling much relieved. I will definitely top dress with compost and mulch and add some worms too. I’ll also try to cut more holes in the bottom of the bag liners by putting a blade on a stick and scraping underneath the pots. It’s only April, but when the trees bloom I’ll send you a snap. Phew!

      Perlite. You can use many things including coco coir, peat, small gravel sand and any mix or whatever you have available. New video coming out soon on all of this with the pros and cons of each. Thanks

    Why don’t your 30 gallon trees grow algae on top of perlite?

    • @rplatow4120
      @rplatow4120 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let them dry out to 1 - 2 inches below the surface between watering. If you do see any algae, a little H2O2 spray will take care of it.

      I will be planting hass avocados in a 30 gallon fabric pot “like yours” and will probably use a perlite Pete 60/40 blend. Using masterblend 4-18-38, calcium nitrate, epsum salt recirculating system. San Diego California. I intend to run this drip system continuously like I have my vegetables in a NFT system. Vegetables are turning out very well the third year running now. Do you think that 100% perlite would be better than my planned 60/40 mix.

      @@AsideShow If on continuously, better to use 100% perlite, the mix is great for timed operation because it holds more moisture.

    The downside to greenhouse vegetable gardening be it in water or in the dirt is always the same. If the electricity goes away... so do the plants.

      Not true at all. We have had power outages and also running completely off grid with a small solar/battery back-up. All about preparation.

    is that all the water it needs, and only once a week?
    Would the roots at the bottom rot if you left a few inches of water in the trough all the time?

    • @greenhousesolutions1074
      @greenhousesolutions1074  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do like to let the trough go dry to avoid excess algae in the water and the plants seem to do better as well. I have tested with water in the trough for a couple weeks straight without any problems for the plant. Not all plants react the same though. Thanks
