Hero Saga Levatein Tactics is a deep cut for sure. It looks fun but I could see how they built the battle system being frustrating to learn. Dragon View has my darkest SNES moment where it took me hours to beet an ice boss and when i finally did the power went out in my house. It took me hours to beat him again! Lots to like and/or be frustrated with playing here!
Can't recommend Shining Force EXA enough! Played it on a whim when looking up underrated PS2 games, and turned out to be probably my favourite PS2 action RPG.
If you think Exile is brutal, try the US version of Exile 2 on the Turbo CD. Working Designs screwed up the difficulty during localization and rather than enemies getting incremental harder they got exponentially harder. The game cannot be beaten as designed and even using cheap gimmicks it’s almost impossible.
I played Grandia Xtreme back in the day & had a fun time. I still have my old PS2 disc of the game. The Grandia games are amazing. Also, I think Enchanted Arms & Unchiained Blades should be added to this list. Both games are difficult, but can be enjoyable for some players. Enchanted Arms was a From Software game released on the 360 & PS3 2-3 years before their Soulsbourne series really took off. And Unchained Blades is an interesting take on a first person dungeon crawler.
Growlanser Heritage of war, and wayfarer of time, were my favorite games when starting to play the jrpg genre. Was specifically looking for obscure titles that weren't on the mainstream list, and I am both pleased and angry that I decided to pick them up on sale at the time. Still wish I had a working copy of wayfarer, but it got damaged by a bully that liked to break my things
I like how even though your personal tastes skew more towards normal/easy games, you still have enough genre knowledge and humility to recommend things for people who like the more hardcore end.
Trinity Zill O'll was so good. I'm so happy you enjoy it as well. A fan translation of the the PS1/PS2 game is out as well. It's a series that I hope Koei goes back to one day.
I'll acquire a PS5 and many PS4 games to boot, so your lists are helping me a lot, I think I watched more than 30 of your videos lol, keep the quality work!
Agree completely. The later entries in the series after the first get progressively easier (but still challenging, especially for a new player), but 4 has a great mix of the difficulty and ease of learning.
@@chuckchan4127 yeah, Untold is a little harder than the original due to that, but highlander and gunner are rather broken on their own. just not as broken as some of the original stuff. Overall it's easier to get into than the original so I'd still recommend it over that. If I had to rank them all in order to start at(barring 5 and nexus as I have not beaten them yet, and need to do that), I'd say 4, then 3, then untold, then either the original 2 or untold 2(both are fine options). From what I've seen of 5 and nexus I would probably put 5 even with 3(for different reasons), and nexus I would say play whenever after you beat 4, but the more games you play first, the better.
I only talk about Etrian Odyssey and Dept. Heaven series, I feel like I need to branch out a little. At the same time, I do find it hard to get into rpgs unlike back then.
Question: has Eric ever reviewed or mentioned Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yoma on the channel? It's a first person dungeon crawler from the same developers as Demon Gaze. I've only played a couple of hours so far, and I'm not sure it counts as Hardcore, but something about the dark, gritty atmosphere and the unique setting (Tokyo in the late 70s...sorta) just really appeals to me. Being able to create your whole party is a big personal plus too.
Stella deus is grindy as hell if you level up the traditional way. But all of those can be worked around by repeatedly hitting a higher level teammate and having healers ready, rinse and repeat Having 1-2 overleveled characters trivializes the game severely as the main content (bar extra catacomb contents) are extremely easy
Operation darkness was frigging ridiculous with its difficulty that's y I spamed special moves and rockets u get a lot of exp hitting multiple enemies with those moves ah that was fun
played brigandine in my childhood and dont understand how to properly play it, just so hard, but i was amazed by the animation. first time to see that kind of srpg
I would definitely check out the sequel! It's an amazing game just like the original but more user friendly with explaining the mechanics. It's super deep and satisfying once you get into it, which really isn't as hard as it seems. There's even a free demo!
I'm surprised at how many of the games on this list I already knew of. In fact, you lead right off with two that I've already beaten! I found Shining Force Exa tough in places, particularly the final boss, but not as hard as its spiritual predecessor, Record of Lodoss War. A good obscure hardcore RPG that I would highly recommend: Phantom Brave: We Meet Again (Wii). (The game also has a PS2 version with no subtitle, but I haven't played it so I can't guarantee it's as hard.)

The problem with hardcore games is that it have to be good to keep you interested in playing! I played many of those games, but it was in a time when was a quest of honor end any game i play
Dragon View had some interesting puzzles but wouldn't call it 'grindy' until the massive difficulty spike of the final boss. I also found it funny how the game has a second-person narration, describing how characters talk/act as if it were a fantasy novel. And the main villain always either 'drawls' or 'calls sarcastically' whenever he talks, incapable of any other form of speech. Suggestion: Favorite protagonists in JRPGs. A good protag can make or break a game, and grinding is easier when you want to see your protag succeed in his/her mission.
Do give record of agarest war a shot if you like disgaia, or the tactics series. It does require a lot of grinding and planing but the system is very complex so the battles never really get to boring while playing.
