I totally agree , all the western military should leave , and just allow the Fat general to sort out the jihadists himself and also pull the plug on all western influence, the general has promised to tackle all the inequality in Niger , obviously he has a great plan as and when the $2bn pa aid is pulled to include all the other western help , as for the loss of membership to the African organisations and what comes with that ! plus sanctions ? he probably has read the book on, how to survive in isolation !

According to the BBC, the historical record proves that French colonial rule established political systems designed to extract valuable resources while using repressive strategies to retain control.
So did British colonial rule, but what was distinctive about France's role in Africa was the extent to which it continued to engage - its critics would say meddle - in the politics and economics of its former territories after independence.
Worse still, the relationship between French political leaders and their allies in Africa was often corrupt, creating a powerful and wealthy elite at the expense of African citizens.

Many leaders in ECOWAS nations face questions regarding their legitimacy. Their governance style often draws parallels to coup leaders, with Ghana frequently being highlighted as a notable exception in the context of West African democracies. A case in point is Cote D'Ivoire's Ouattara, who is currently in his third term, a move enabled by constitutional modifications and suppression of opposition voices.
Furthermore, the lingering influence of colonial-era agreements poses challenges for several of these nations. These pacts can be viewed as a continuation of colonial practices, wherein countries lack full control over their export revenues. Western nations often appear to overlook these governance concerns unless their interests are directly threatened.

    • @benjauron5873

I just want to point this out. According to Freedom House...
      🇫🇮 Finland (for context) - 100
🇨🇻 Cape Verde - 92 (highest in Africa)
🇺🇸 United States of America (for context) - 83
🇬🇭 Ghana - 80 (highest in continental Africa)
      🇸🇳 Senegal - 68
      🇸🇱 Sierra Leone - 63
      🇱🇷 Liberia - 60
      🇧🇯 Benin - 59
🇳🇪 PRE-COUP Niger - 51 (numbers for post-coup Niger are not yet available)
      🇨🇮 Cote D'Ivoire - 49
      🇬🇲 The Gambia - 48
      🇬🇼 Guinea-Bissau - 43
      🇳🇬 Nigeria - 43
      🇹🇬 Togo - 42
      🇲🇷 Mauritania (former member) - 36
      🇧🇫 Burkina Faso (suspended member) - 30
      🇬🇳 Guinea (suspended member) - 30
      🇲🇱 Mali (suspended member) - 29
      🇰🇵 North Korea (for context) - 3
      🇪🇷 Eritrea (for context) - 1
So, as you can see, it is indeed true that most ECOWAS members have a lot of room for improvement, but, by African standards, they all do score pretty high, and all members in good standing do score considerably higher than former and suspended members. So ECOWAS countries must be doing at least one or two things right.
In a democracy, unpopular governments are removed through elections, not force of arms. Ballots, not bullets, remember? And if the democracy is flawed, as is the case with all but a couple ECOWAS members, you fix it through democratic, constitutional means. Cape Verde and Ghana didn't always score so high. What you DON'T do is turn your back on the rule of law and hand absolute power over to an epauletted thug whose only legitimacy comes from the barrels of his guns. Once such people take power, they tend not to give it back.

For one, while I'm sure the air where you are is really fresh, remember that in the real world all types of Ghanaian people carry out countless trade activities for which they travel beyond your borders daily into neighboring countries. Visa-free access of such people assists member economies. Also, while countries negotiate foreign trade independently, some significant international treaties are negotiated through the bloc. Finally, what will you do when refugees from conflicts in your neighboring Sahel country Burkina Faso and nearby Mali and Niger start streaming into your country?

Maybe it is not just the French who are the issue but the climatic and economic challeneges that create instability in the region, maybe trying to sort yourself out is complicated, trying to get people to agree on a course of action is very difficult. Is definitely a lot better than foreign intervention because this way the political establishments start to act differently, with more of it at stake than before.

@@Pops_cxxl I think that what I mean to say that it is not just the French who are to blame, living in one of the most inhospitable countries, surrounded by other countries in a similar situation, can make it rather hard to grow an economy.
