I agree with you about the e-book should be a fraction of the price of an actual book. I think that buying an e-book should save us money, not making a hole in our pockets!
Kindle is the smart one for not using the standard book format and only allowing purchase of ebooks from Amazon and Amazon only. Google Ebooks isn't going to make a dent in their ebook sales one bit.
If you are among the 95% of the world population not living in the US, the closest you can get to the experience described by the video is buying ebooks from Amazon and reading them anywhere with the iPad, the Samsung Galaxy, a mobile phone, a PC or Mac. Most ebook sellers, Barnes & Noble, Apple and Google included, do not seem to realize that there is revenue to be made in Europe, Asia, the entire Americas and elsewhere.
Or downloading and reading books off of Project Gutenberg. ^^ They have been collecting and offering (free of charge) public domain ebooks and other ebooks that have been freely given by their authors since 1971.
Hello! I've been reading your weblog for a while now and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from New Caney Tx! Just wanted to tell you keep up the fantastic job!
@Lennatron It's because I see digital publishing only as a "parallel" technology to put next to traditional books. E-books are great for PDFs and also for free or cheap publications. That's why I love my kindle. BUT if I had to choose (at almost the same price) between a digital and a physical book, for a number of reasons I'd choose the latter, first of all because it's an intrinsically better "device" for reading. E-books win for the quantity of material, traditional books for the quality ;)
@Lennatron That's exactly why I got a Nook instead of a kindle. I prefer to be able to read ebooks I bought six years ago and read ones that have been around since 1971 (courtesy of Protect Gutenberg).
@yencidmusic and we are talking about google, the biggest internet company of our time... i think if there are a small number of companies that can launch a global product, one of (maybe the biggest one) is google...
@darcynog its not like they dont want to but they have make deals with publishers in every country first to be able to bring their books to their service.... and thats why they chose the USA first, because it is the country strongest customer-power
Why don't you release a Made by Google ereader? It will be an awesome experience syncing my Google Play Books instead of doing all that confusing process with Adobe Digital Editions with other ereaders...
Since eBooks and the devices to read them have been around now for a while... What is the benefit of the Google Books service if we already have a electronic library of books and can't upload them. This is the equivalent of setting up a new email account and not letting us send email to any of our existing contacts!
I'm looking forward to hoping Google EBookstore for a long long time ago. Thanks to Larry Page and Sergi Burinn. Finally I have archived my dream in the long run.
@Marcel Gomez you... do realize that this comment is 2 years old, right? and that some of these comments are from 2013-2014, before the name change, right?
@Marcel Gomez ok you're probably right about that "lacking confidence" part, but my point still stands. responding with an emotional jab isn't going to hide the fact that not only are you VERY late to the party, but i also didn't ask to be notified for name changes on a service i don't even care about. edit: and as for that "why so defensive" part? defending your point is pretty much the entire point of an argument.
Just keep a word up to your mind while watching at this video ► Stopmotion. Incredible work! I didn't use those ebooks yet, but the video is amazing by itself.
@yencidmusic this is an observation that I'm seeing in many so say global internet companies... a small example iTunes don't work in many countries around the world... how many years people need to wait for apple ? many applications in facebook has millions of users outside US. but there is no localization for any of them... that's a problem, and i think it is a big big problem... this is a sickness of many global internet companies... they all forget what global means...
Traditional Books are still a better technology, these e-books are an interesting alternative but they will never replace real books, simply because the overall reading experience is worse. I have a Kindle 3 and I love it btw ;)
Can I share the books I buy? So far that has been my biggest deterrent for me, the price of ebooks is similar to buying the actual book. But if no one else can read it then the price should be a fraction of the price of a paperback.
@crasherball I understand they need agreement with the publishers but has no publisher agreed to let them sell outside of the US? I can't even download their application in the iPad app store to use with public domain books. As much as I would rather not to be constrained to one bookstore with their proprietary format, Amazon sells worldwide almost all the books that I need.
@dragersolid why do people always say this? Its JUST starting right now! If probably will be expanding around the world but not many companies launch world wide
great video, very interesting. Now to be honest this will take a few decades to really take over, because people still like the feeling of having a book with pages but then again that's just now, even though I would prefer to have a book of real pages, that doesn't matter cause society changes and the future generations will grow up and prefer virtual books in the coming decades, so I think it'll work at that point.
9 years later, it seems that’s happened somewhat. I think traditional books are still in the public consciousness, but so are e-readers. They’re kind of equal right now.
Too bad this doesn't even exist. So much for 'choice'. Google Play Books doesn't even let you import ebooks you already own. So much for syncing and storing 'all' your books. Expected more openness from Google. Unfortunately this is probably a restriction Google agreed to in order to secure contracts with publishers..
This video seems like a copy of apple advertisements, using short little sentences of 12 works or less, with light 'acoustic' throwaway music in the background and cute colorful graphics. Google must have figured it worked well for Apple, so they would just stick with that format. SUCH ORIGINALITY!
Does it have to be connected to wifi or can you download a book if you are traveling to another country? Or can you download books in another country to be able to read them?
Here is a great book that I just got as an ebook on Amazon it's called "How to overcome fear, and start living fearless" the book is amazing check it out It's very life changing!
To Google. With this new announcement, does this foreshadow the coming of a Google-branded e-reader? Will I be allowed to justifiably splurge on said device? Will you make this Google fanboy happy?
I agree with you about the e-book should be a fraction of the price of an actual book. I think that buying an e-book should save us money, not making a hole in our pockets!

This video is a masterpiece in its own class... clean, direct, beautiful

GOOGLE YOU ARE AWESOME! Love the bit about small businesses especially! Damn you guys are awesome!
@PostLibrary They do let you download the original ePub file.
Remember back in the day when this was phenomenal

You should be able to import your ebooks bought from other companies like you can with amazon and apple.
Why don't you release a Made by Google ereader? It will be an awesome experience syncing my Google Play Books instead of doing all that confusing process with Adobe Digital Editions with other ereaders...

Really thankful to the Google team for introducing new devise e-book facility.
@gadda01 You can pin the book to your device on google and thus read it when off line.
Wait until people start reading off of Googles glasses. XD
I'm looking forward to hoping Google EBookstore for a long long time ago.
Thanks to Larry Page and Sergi Burinn.
Finally I have archived my dream in the long run.
m
Launched!
Google eBooks is basically "a Cross-Platform Kindle"
@Marcel Gomez you... do realize that this comment is 2 years old, right?

Google, who did the video animations? They're really cute.
I love the music. What's it called?

I'm trying to figure out If I should buy fifty shades of grey on my ebook or physical book.. Hmmmm
Google eBooks is [a]live • Damn Google, why don't you support the Amazon Kindle? • Damn Amazon, why don't you support ePub?
yep, me too! It seems like all of the book companies only focus on making fortune not about spreading new ideas and making worlds much better.
Traditional Books are still a better technology, these e-books are an interesting alternative but they will never replace real books, simply because the overall reading experience is worse. I have a Kindle 3 and I love it btw ;)

Sounds great... for people living in the US.
Still no coverage anywhere else after 2.5 years?
@crasherball I understand they need agreement with the publishers but has no publisher agreed to let them sell outside of the US? As much as I would rather not to be constrained to one bookstore with their proprietary format, Amazon sells worldwide almost all the books that I need.
what do you mean by old technology... Please explain. I do not own a e-reader do I need to own an e-reader?
God, I wish our marching band was this good! This is? amazing!
How do I borrow books though? I would really like to be able to read an ebook without having to own it.
@dragersolid why do people always say this? Its JUST starting right now! If probably will be expanding around the world but not many companies launch world wide

Thank
Kind of ironic for being google... the link doesnt work! Try removing the dot after you get page error
I like the traditional way. With pages
I'm completely loving it after just 5 mins of using it.. :) Snap Google. :)
Too bad this doesn't even exist. So much for 'choice'. Google Play Books doesn't even let you import ebooks you already own. So much for syncing and storing 'all' your books.

I could not see iPhone app for Google eBook yet !
do you need an e-reader to use google e-book
This video seems like a copy of apple advertisements, using short little sentences of 12 works or less, with light 'acoustic' throwaway music in the background and cute colorful graphics. Google must have figured it worked well for Apple, so they would just stick with that format. SUCH ORIGINALITY!
Another Great Project Of GOOOOGLE :D.. Keep It Up..
@darrendude31 True, but can you take millions of books from the library with you everywhere you go? I would like to see you try.
How do I read this on my kindle?
Is Google looking to cutting into Amazaon's Kindle sales... Not sure yet on this one..
reading in tablets and laptops still normal, but reading in a smartphone feels kinda stupid
this is one other think what i love from google and its another think what i cant test or use cause is not able on my country (mexico) :'(
what's the e-reader shown at the end with the title page of Hawkins' The Grand Design' shown on it?
Anyone know/recognise it?
My ebooks are available on a variety of readers from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords. Not sure about Google though.
Does it have to be connected to wifi or can you download a book if you are traveling to another country? Or can you download books in another country to be able to read them?
yes
That smartphone looks like a kindle.
Please remove the period at the end of the hyperlink in the video info/comment. It redirects to a 404.
Darn it... the prices are no better than other ebook stores and it's still DRM'd...
The Google e-book makes lots of sense.
introducing a book with no paper that also has book marks
That made me laugh "google stores your books safely in the digital file"
That's cool. Are these my books or Google for everyone to read???
I KNEW google would finally find a way to charge us!
