My dad passed away in 2020, I'm 32 now and I recently went thru some more of my dads things. This song was on my mind so I had to play it. I love you dad and I miss you.

Well, when my dad was my age he had 2 boys about my daughters age. He was a functional alcoholic, we had food and a home. We took small family vacations to my grandpas cabin. That is literally my life right now. Art is in the eye of the beholder, what it means to you or me or the artist or that 24 year old kid that started this comment thread may all be different but are all still valid, THATS WHAT ART IS!

I was roughly 24 years old when I first heard this and I instantly fell in love with it. Now I'm 75 and I'm the old "man", and I love this song even more than ever before. Neil Young was a musical genius to be able to write such an emotional song that has stayed deep inside my heart for almost my entire lifetime.

My father passed away on March 2nd 2020 from COPD & lung disease/recurring bouts of pneumonia. He was 63 years old. Rest in Peace Daddy. James Michael Davis from Riverside, CA. I’ll always be your baby. You and I made that pinky promise when I was 4 years old. Dad, since you passed I gave up witchcraft and cracked open your Bible I saw you reading quietly everyday since I was 10 years old. I asked you if I could have your Bible when you were in the ICU. I saw a couple tears drop from your eyes. It took about 1.5 years to cleanse myself of the darknsss I had invited into my life but I always have felt your presence with me since you died. I had another baby unexpectedly! HE turned 2 last week. Ezekiel James. I call him Jaimie to honor your memory. He looks so much like you and is definitely your grandson! He’s got the dark tight curly hair and olive skin tone. He’s going to be tall and has long flat feet like you too. He loves to make other people laugh just like you as well. I cant help but think you would have utterly adored your grandson if you were here. Remi is 15 already. She wears your clothes sometimes and has made them trendy. Her friends even like to borrow them especially your Bill Cosby looking knitted sweaters lol. Remi wore your electric green Ren & Stimpy t-shirt to a football game school event and people went crazy over it lol. You are still loved and cherished here. Thank you for being my father. I love you.

I said of course and his eyes lit up.
He said he’d lost his wife and had border collies in the past(our dog is a collie)
He wanted to give him a treat and looked in his car but couldn’t find any so I gave him one to give to our dog.
Dog sat,wagged his tail and gave the old guy his paw.
Think that made the old guys day and I thought of this song after leaving and carrying on…Neil Young captures the memories in a lot of his songs….been a fan for 50 years now and the songs never grow old like we do❤

My father passed away last November. He taught me lots about music. Got me into playing the guitar and this was the first song I learned. Challenging for a beginner but it was something I wanted to play for my dad at 10 years old.
Moved to college… got the call at 20 he passed. Came home and immediately went to the record room and played this album. For 2 months I played this album. Crying every damn time. Thank you Neil Young (even though you will never see this)

My father took his life when I was 11. Unfortunately didn’t have him for the most important years of my life but appreciate what time i did have. He was my hero and I can see that I’m just like he was. In a good way and a bad way. Was a great man just couldn’t overcome his demons. What a great song. My dad died 7 years ago at 86. The anniversary of his death was two days ago. He was the consummate father. Our mom was an alcoholic. She had demons but I loved her. He divorced her when I was 13 and took custody of me and my two younger brothers. If you were friends with his children you became family, too. Meaning he would give you hell about things as if you were his own child. But in a good way. He taught us to fish and love sports. I played 3 sports in HS and earned 9 letters. He never missed an event. Between basketball football and running track probably close to 160 events. He was there. My dad was born in 1930. The youngest of four. We never missed a family reunion. He had 64 cousins. His father had 11 siblings. Im now the old man. I was young until last year when prostate surgery knocked the hell out of me. But Im working on it. My dad was my hero and mentor and rock my whole life. I was a lucky man.

I play this song while working in the barn here in New Mexico. Its beautiful. My grandmothers ranch. The red sunsets. This fire in the sky for miles. Horses running around. The sheep coming back into the corral. Blessed its my escape from the city life. A peace im so happy. To sit on the corral fence watching the sunset far into the desert/mesas and watching the sheep dogs playing with my nephews. How much i wanna protect them from the outside crazy world.

I lost my dad a week ago. It's been hard without him. He was our rock. Yeah, we argued from time to time, but he was my hero. He served his country in Vietnam, and he served his community when he became a police officer. He also taught people how to save lives when he taught CPR at the Red Cross.
But despite my EMT training, I couldn't save him. His heart gave out and he passed away. I didn't cry when he passed, I just went numb. Hell, I'm still numb and I don't know why. I should be crying, but I haven't shed any tears.
Rest in peace, Dad. You're still my hero.

There are different stages of grief, at first the normal reaction is to go numb out of self preservation in order to carry out the responsibilities that come with taking care of the dead but sooner or later it hits you like a wall of bricks. The sadness eventually gets better but stays at a subtle low level, it never really goes away you just learn to live with it

My father is about to go. While I had a father, I never had a dad and the relationship I never had is what I mourn. This song really hits home as I've always been afraid I'll become like him and continue to be even at 45. Wonderful song.

I have a similar situation with my dad, never had a relationship with him, but I feel I’m some way I became a lot like him from his good qualities he had got passed down to me, yet my older brother is like him in the worst traits, and hearing this song kinda hit home from watch Due Date and now has a place in my playlist now.

Good for you. My birthday is may 25. I’ll be 72. That’s the first time I’ve sa❤I’d that. Wow! We may be getting old ~ but we got all the best musicians! We got to go to th e BEST concerts. I grew up in San Francisco and saw the best of the best ~ the Beatles, the Stones, Santana, Tom Petty, The Who , I could go on and on and on. I was blessed.

My dad passed over 25 years ago. We listened to this. Now, as the old man, I have a daughter. At her wedding we had this for our dance. I'm sure some people were kind of confused, but we both get it. That's all that matters.

My dad died in 2021. He was my best friend, my mentor, my life inspiration. I’ve followed in his footsteps. Every day I think about what he did, what he would do. I’m just like him. That’s what I’m most proud of. Rip pops lops.

My dad died a year ago tomorrow, and I'm still waiting for the day when hearing his name makes me smile instead of cry. Like you, he was my best friend. The last night of his life I pushed his hospice bed and oxygen up to the tv and listened to music with him all night until he passed. He wasn't able to open his eyes or speak by that point, and he couldn't move his fingers, but I know he heard his favorite songs and me telling him over and over what an impact he had on my life and how much I was going to miss him. I miss him a ton.
Today is my dad's birthday. He died in 2020. I miss him!😢
Sorry brother, my step father passed away back in ‘94, COPD… he raised me as I was his own child 🙏
