I've never seen Hunger games but I love this song. It reminds me of humanity's pride, wars, all the terrible things people have done to each other. I'm reading Hiroshima's diary and this song gives me chills when I think about what they had to go through. "They strung up a man, they said who murdered three" It's enough to make a grown man cry.

But for every one that fell, 5 jumped over their body to keep running. And as the defense is overwhelmed, the fighters quickly move their precious quarry into the dam. Large crates rigged with TNT. With the charges set, the survivors run. There would be no time to gather the dead. Their bodies would remain where they lay alongside the fallen Peacekeepers, and when the dam exploded, all bodies, from both sides, were swept away by the water. This was only one battle. For those who want the meaning of this song it’s about a man who was suspected and charged with murder the penalty was death so before he was about to go be hung at the hanging tree he called out for his love to flee (run away) or for her to meet him at the hanging tree to wear a necklace of hope side by side with him (means they would hang there together)
I remember watching this movie in the theaters with my mom. This scene shook me to my core, to see and hear this on the big screen. To this day I listen to this song and get chills.

He was actually at the hanging tree when the events in this song took place. He was a peacekeeper there at the time. 2. His girlfriend from like 60 years ago made up this song. 3. He also killed her. I love this song. In the books. In the movies. And when you learn about the actual meaning: The man wants his love to flee to him, not away to him. He things his love will be safer dead than alive. I loved the book. I was skeptical at first because I didn’t want to not hate snow. But she’s genius in her showings. Nobody is all good or all bad. And the connections between all the other books. She’s a god!

It's about time Hollywood created a gigantic movie star on the level of a Julia Roberts in the early 90's. *Spoilers from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes* 🌹: This song, written by Lucy Gray Baird (the first District 12 victor), narrates the execution of Arlo Chance, a miner and a rebel who was hanged by the District 12 Peacekeepers for being responsable of an explosion in the mines that killed three people ( _They strung up a man they say they murdered three_ ). His last words, to a girl named Lil are “Run! Run, Lil! Ru-“ ( _Where a dead man called out for his love to flee_ ) after his death, jabberjays (they were not yet extinct) along with mockingjays hauntingly repeat his final moments. Coriolanus Snow is present in this event and in the performance on this song at the Hob, as he was punished to become a Peacekeeper for cheating in the 10th Hunger Games, he mentored Lucy Gray and he chose District 12 to fulfill his punishment, as he fall in love with her.
Additional information, this song can also related to Coriolanus Snow himself. As he also kills 3 people (Bobbin, that mayor girl, Sejanus indirectly), and he also ask Lucy (his lover) to run away too.

Here’s what I think this song means: This song tells the story of a man who was charged with murder (who did not commit the crime). He was targeted and he tells his love to flee for her life and in her he would live on. He asks her to return to the tree when she can return. Something happens and she is either unable to go to safety or chooses not to and consequently is killed. In the end, both of the lovers are killed and therefore lost to time. His spirit still waits for her, but as she is dead, she never comes.
It's more about this: A man is convicted of murdering 3 persons. He gets the death penalty and gets hanged. Before his hanging he tells hi love to flee or tho hang herself beside him, the necklace of hope.

I believe it is ultimately why he succumb to the rebellion. Lucy was the only person that ever worked her way into his heart and exposed his weaknesses. He tried to kill her so that part of him would never exist. Weakness. With Katniss' rise, he was reminded of his weakness and Lucy, to which his actions then turned from that of a ruthless leader to a weak man trying to quell a raging fire. This book is a brilliant companion story to the original franchise. It tells us that the rebellion didn't start with Katniss - it had been brewing long before. Before the dark days.
I never appreciated the genius of this song until I read "Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" The fourth Hunger Games book that explains about Jabberjays (who can repeat human speech perfectly) and Mocking Jays (who can only make melodies of the speech.) First verse is the original source, stood on the gallows. Second is the first Jabber Jay to pick it up and repeat. Third is where the rest of the Jabber flock in the trees pick it up and fill the forest with sound. Fourth is instrumental only when it has faded away only carried/remembered by Mocking Jays in their tuneful way.

The song was written by Snow's former lover and it talked about different fact of discrit 12 (like Arlo, the man who shout for her love to run away). However the song reported the story of Lucy Gray (Snow Lover) and Billy Taupe (the boy she loved before) that used to meet under the tree and at some point of the story Billy (who belived he would be hanged, wanted that Lucy could be hanged with him). However in the end snow was the one that Lucy met under the three and they want runaway together ... but the things went out very wrong.

So one of Snow’s friend was going to escape and do something rebellious and Snow ended up betraying him and got him killed. Lucy Gray later in the story runs with Snow, but she later realizes by a conversation what he did. Snow ends up trying to kill her and she escapes dissapearing forever.

His last words, to a girl named Lil are “Run! Run, Lil! Ru-“ ( _Where a dead man called out for his love to flee_ ) after his death, jabberjays (they were not yet extinct) along with mockingjays hauntingly repeat his final moments. Coriolanus Snow is present in this event and in the performance on this song at the Hob, as he was punished to become a Peacekeeper for cheating in the 10th Hunger Games, he mentored Lucy Gray and he chose District 12 to fulfill his punishment, as he fall in love with her.

Here’s what I think this song means:
This song tells the story of a man who was charged with murder (who did not commit the crime). He was targeted and he tells his love to flee for her life and in her he would live on. He asks her to return to the tree when she can return. Something happens and she is either unable to go to safety or chooses not to and consequently is killed. In the end, both of the lovers are killed and therefore lost to time. His spirit still waits for her, but as she is dead, she never comes.
It's about a lynching. No trial, but execution first. Heartbreaking. That's what used to happen in the Deep South 80 years ago.
It's more about this:
A man is convicted of murdering 3 persons. He gets the death penalty and gets hanged. Before his hanging he tells hi love to flee or tho hang herself beside him, the necklace of hope.

I feel like he sees Lucy Gray in Katniss and hates her for it. They are frighteningly similar.
I believe it is ultimately why he succumb to the rebellion. Lucy was the only person that ever worked her way into his heart and exposed his weaknesses. He tried to kill her so that part of him would never exist. Weakness. With Katniss' rise, he was reminded of his weakness and Lucy, to which his actions then turned from that of a ruthless leader to a weak man trying to quell a raging fire.
This book is a brilliant companion story to the original franchise. It tells us that the rebellion didn't start with Katniss - it had been brewing long before. Before the dark days.

I never appreciated the genius of this song until I read "Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" The fourth Hunger Games book that explains about Jabberjays (who can repeat human speech perfectly) and Mocking Jays (who can only make melodies of the speech.)
First verse is the original source, stood on the gallows.
Second is the first Jabber Jay to pick it up and repeat.
Third is where the rest of the Jabber flock in the trees pick it up and fill the forest with sound.
Fourth is instrumental only when it has faded away only carried/remembered by Mocking Jays in their tuneful way.

This song transcends the space of being just a good song and enters into the realm of being a true song.
It has so many layers. Like many others, I get chills when the crowd joins in because of what that signifies. Most revolutions spring from the spirit of the individual and blanket the collective group with courage. Then we see the leader vanish into the people because any successful revolution consumes the hero. Fortunately the people don't need the hero anymore until the next time they do. This song is true. The song was written by Snow's former lover and it talked about different fact of discrit 12 (like Arlo, the man who shout for her love to run away). However the song reported the story of Lucy Gray (Snow Lover) and Billy Taupe (the boy she loved before) that used to meet under the tree and at some point of the story Billy (who belived he would be hanged, wanted that Lucy could be hanged with him). However in the end snow was the one that Lucy met under the three and they want runaway together ... but the things went out very wrong.

So one of Snow’s friend was going to escape and do something rebellious and Snow ended up betraying him and got him killed. Lucy Gray later in the story runs with Snow, but she later realizes by a conversation what he did. Snow ends up trying to kill her and she escapes dissapearing forever.
