Currently I just have some metal hinged kayak racks screwed into the side of the house, but I'm definitely looking at making something like this. Great tutorial man
Great tutorial thanks Was just wondering do you worry about leaving your kayaks outside in all weather. I heard that it can effect the plastic and the should be cover ? Just wondering what your thoughts are ?
I put mine in the shade to reduce the impact. A little bit of Aerospace 303 is a great way to make sure that your boats are protected from UV amzn.to/3VonM9D
Thanks for the video! Great job! Are you actually using a lag screw instead of a lag bolt on the arms? I don't see where the bolt comes through the 4x4. I see where you give in the parts list that the lag bolt is 4" long, thus not long enough to reach the other side anyway. Just checking in case you counter sunk the opposite end so the nut wouldn't protrude.
aren't you worried about UV degradation from having them outdoors all day getting blasted by the sun? if yes: you could just put a tiny roof on top and put up a vertical tarp between two trees to catch the most of it. not a lot of work + stil great access + would block ~90% of UV which is imo enough to get the job done. or maybe plant some quick growing needle trees around it like in the background - into wich you then only have to maintain your cave cut out. you'd have your very own b(o)at cave then!
Yes and no. Yes it is a problem to be aware of, but this spot is in the shade except for late in the evening which is when this was shot. Eventually I will have an attic in the garage for boat storage.
Im more surprised your store those uncovered in direct sunlight Prolonged UV light on that plastic degrades it's structural integrity and washes out the color.
@@AlexBarham surprised how often I came across kayaks stored outdoors completely sun baked. These people obviously don't realize the issue as they're listed at excellent condition barely used😆
I kept kayaks outside, one day I upset some dudes doing drugs next to my property. they tried to steel a kayak hanging in the carport 6 times that summer, every time coming with a bigger bolt cutter and I was increasing size on a cable. I ended up with a biggest chain I could find in the hardware store. guess what, they came with an angle grinder while I was away for 2 days. I recovered the kayak because people reported it seen on a property involved in buying illegal stuff a couple of kilometers down the road, so I called police. Conclusion - those cables are no protection at all. for few years I kept those boats in the house, got tired of that and ended up putting cheaper patched/welded kayaks outside and engraved my phone number and name all over the place, so at least they would have harder time selling it. and built a rack for more valuable boats inside.
I think anyone who has spent any time around a workshop knows that any of these security measures at best keep good people honest. The security cameras will be doing the heavy lifting
@@AlexBarham I have cameras all over the place, my wife is a big fan of them. I don't believe in it much. you know, foxes pee on their hidden food to make sure that no one takes it. engraving and marking is an action of a similar kind. what the camera will show? some hooded dude cutting with a bolt cutter, at best? in a covid mask. no help.
I would love for you to talk about all those different boats, you have some cool ones in there!
Yeah maybe!

Thanks James! Yeah maybe I should cover how to make those J bar wall mounts for cheap?
Very helpful. Thanks for sharing Alex. Good luck in the new digs.
Thanks Paul!
Sick! This is helpful, I didn’t find any good designs either when searching.
Thanks Blake! Glad someone will get something out of this!
Great tutorial thanks

Thanks for catching that! I did indeed mean lag scew. The eye-bolt for the locks is a bolt so that must have gotten a wire crossed in my mind.
How do I get a supply list?
Sorry! I forgot to add that to the description! Added and posted below:
Materials:
7 - 2x4x10 ideally pressure treated
2 - 2x4x8 pressure treated
2 - 4x4x10 pressure treated
10 - 4" lag bolts
1 - Box of 3" deck screws

You're not wrong. This is somewhat temporary, and placed strategically in a shady spot.

For sure! It's not something a lot of people think about
