They didn’t have to win but if they were competitive we would be having a totally different discussion. Every coach in my life was capable of winning legit big games, neal hasn’t done it once. I want to like him but getting humiliated on a national stage is getting old
I agree 100%. And people want to mention "oh but theyre bigger and stronger and faster" .... ok sure, I get the fact that in actual * ratings PSU get's the players.... but for shit sake, it's not like we dont have world class weight facilities, its not like we don't have the best nutritionists and medicine.... so tell me why in the good shit our guys are not stronger and faster? Who isn't pushing them? Are we seriously going to chalk it up to "our guys genetically cant get stronger or faster" ..... that's some BS Neal is a wussy, sorry not sorry, I also want to like Neal, but he is not the man's man you need as a head football coach
Disappointingly, in his pres conference, Neal called Pitt, VT, and a win against an Oklahoma team in their worst season in 20 years signature wins. Maybe he doesn't understand WVU football the way I thought he did.
Guys, the offensive PI was forced by the WVU defender coming up and grabbing the WR’s arms… so ok, we’ll take the PI. I watched the Wallace TD catch several times… his hands moved together with that ball as he fell, it was not a juggle. The refs also gave WVU an unearned first down on a 4th down that led to a FG… and also gave them a TD.
You guys went on about the 13--6 score and complained about the OPI. But this fully ignores the 4th down stop PSU got the refs made a horrendous spot, gave them a first down, opportunity to milk more clock, and then get 3 free points. If that sequence was called right PSU had plenty of time to score and you'd be at 13-3 by the end of it. His Shin was also clearly down. Plus the gifted TD when he didn't cross the goal line at the end.
This, it is astounding to hear Neal Brown and WVU fans complaining about officiating. 99% of the botched calls went against PSU and were egregious. Especially the two you referenced. If anything WVU should be thanking the officials cause they helped keep it closer than it otherwise would've been.
I dont think the problem is losing to penn state. Most people thought we would lose to penn state. The problem is most people also thought we would at least have something out there that looked like a football team. If they play like that the rest of the year we will be lucky to win 3 or 4 games with that schedule.
For some reason, I continue to give Neal Brown way too much credit. And this is coming from a guy that’s always considered him to be a marginal or subpar coach. He’s only had one good season in five seasons and yet I thought he learned how to coach finally last year and would carry that forward. Well, Neal is learning why he and WVU never get the respect that he claims they deserve.
A good coaching staff would have been able to take advantage of the long break to come up with a better game plan when it was obvious that the one that you came into the game with was not going to get the job done.
One of the reasons a game against any of the blue blood programs is so difficult is that their practice squad players are as good as your starters. You have a hard time replicating the talent level in practice and preparation so when the game starts you have to adjust to the speed and talent difference quickly and error free.
It is refreshing, to a Lion fan, to hear three mature adults discuss this game. I have distinct memories of the three (Huff, Wyant, Marconi, etc.) years when WVU clearly had superior talent.
Lmao, wv benefitted by the officials several times. And it was a clear defensive PI on that same play that wasnt called. Wvu was gifted a phantom pi call later in game , phantom spots for 1st down, td, etc. Give it a rest
During the pre-game show on Fox, one of the sportscasters actually called us the Musketeers and needed to be corrected. Humiliating that he didn't know something so simple.
IMHO, the argument Tony made @47:51 about Nehlen losing to PSU in year 6 holds no water. Yes, PSU has always been better in than WVU 8 times out of 10. Comparing that game in year 6 in the Nehlen era to year 6 now is disingenuous at best. Entering his 6th season, Don Nehlen was 41-19 overall, 3-1 in bowl games, and 4 of those seasons WVU ended the season ranked in the top 20. And that 6th season? Ended up 7-3-1. So yes, PSU normally beats WVU. That isn’t the issue. The issue is we’re in year 6 of what can only be considered at this point a very expensive mistake, with the same glaring issues that have been present since Brown arrived here. I hope we still have a good season, but I’m all in at 9 wins or bust…anything less and a change needs made.
Even more telling to me is how the team came out after the break and screwed the pooch even after the long break and the opportunity to gather themselves and mount a challenge.
THIS is why ESPN, and all the haters view us like they do. I honestly cant remember a time where we largely had the national spotlight and laid a complete egg. Maybe OU 2016 but even then we atleast showed a little life in the 2nd half. Yes, they are a great team and we got screwed on a few calls (big calls actually) but we literally had a gun held to our foot at point blank range and couldn't stop shooting the damn thing. There isnt one bright spot i can fall back on to make my case at the water cooler on Monday. We stunk the place up and thats it.
They watched the entire 1st half, and came out and made zero adjustments. And why did GG, not scramble? He had tons of open field, and didn't run like last year.
The reason this loss is so devastating is that there were completely unrealistic expectations. Penn State has the better team and it showed. I don't believe WVU is a bad team and I think they will have a good year.
He's just getting over his head he's going for first downs 4th and one inside field goal range with no score on the board why? That's not how you play football. Take the points take the momentum and move on.
I wouldn't have taken the ball , should have deferred til 2nd half , Coach Brown always takes it ! That cost us ! He said Hudson was returning kick offs ,, anyone know why Trey was back there ? Didn't take any time out til end of half ? He needs to know when they need to regroup !
Brad is absolutely right. He's correct about everything he said about the officiating. The refs made terrible calls against both teams and the review officials somehow validated the refs terrible job. It did not lose us the game (we needed no help in doing that) but Brad is right, it did affect the game. It affected the trajectory of the game.

It favored West Virginia easily. We had one bad non-call go in our favor. You had several extremely favorable spots that extended drives and your touchdown was not a touchdown. You also had a turnover negated by a bad call. You would have scored 3-6 points with proper officitiating. Also you should have gotten a flag for your safety clapping that caused a turnover, but we got it right back. The game wasn't close on the scoreboard, but it was even further apart in reality.
We heard that this is the deepest team neal has had, weve been told its a veteran led team, etc etc. But yet here we are year 6 with a impressive record of 31-30. Just not sure if neal has the answer anymore. Not because we lost the game. That was kinda expected but we looked totally lost out there and unprepared. Looked like a high school JV team out there
You better rewatch that TD Trey caught the ball with both feet in and held onto the ball all the way through the contact with the ground and on the catch before that the defender initiated the contact with the WR so it should have been DPI. Not to mention the 4th down wvu went for and was a full yard short they gave wvu the first down and on the goal line the only TD wvu got wasnt a TD the ball never touched the goal line.
Penn State was irrelevant. This game was simply more of the same. Six years in & the record is 31-30 with zero couch burning/big time wins. Exchange Penn State for any top 10-15 team & you will get the same results. WVU football used to have an identity & punch above their weight. It's been the opposite for many years.
Tony, you are justifying this garbage performance by being up past performances against Penn State.
