Study, Know, Learn, Hear, Listen, Do? Humanities for Social Studies

In the talk “Study, Know, Learn, Hear, Listen, Do?”, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak addresses the problems of producing accurate and relevant knowledge in the present political climate, in which universities - in particular the Humanities and the Social Sciences - are under siege by neoliberal capitalism. Addressing the doctoral students of the Center for Social Studies, she calls for the responsibility of a thorough reading at the level of “study, know” and prompts to “listen, hear” in order to “learn”.

It’s unfortunate Prof Spivak described the harassment as two-sided: “two people sexually harassing each-other” - this is an obfuscation. Why would a graduate student sexually harass their dissertation advisor, who often times is decisive in finding their advisee a job afterwards, depending on how well connected they are? Disappointing remarks.
