    Originally, the park wanted to re-build a replica of the Shooting Star roller coaster previously located at Cincinnati's Coney Island. Cincinnati's Coney Island was the predecessor to Kings Island and the Shooting Star was immensely popular at the park until the ride was demolished in 1971. The original idea to rebuild the Shooting Star was back-burnered in favor of a terrain coaster utilizing the park's natural wooded hills. The Shooting Star was indeed rebuilt, but not at Kings Island. A replica was constructed at Canada's Wonderland called the Mighty Canadian Minebuster.
    The Beast opened on April 14, 1979 as the tallest, fastest, and longest wooden roller coaster in the world. It is often credited as the first modern-day wooden coaster to generate a marketing campaign. From elaborate animated commercials to countless television spots, the ride became famous worldwide. Because so many people have heard about The Beast, it is one of the most well-known roller coasters in the world. Charlie Dinn, Kings Island's Director of Construction, Maintenance, and Engineering at the time, spearheaded the The Beast's construction project. Dinn later formed his own construction firm, Dinn Corporation, in 1982 that went on to build ten more notable coasters across the country. The firm eventually became Custom Coasters International.
    The Beast originally featured three underground tunnels. By its second season the second and third underground tunnels had been enclosed into one long one so that an access road could be built. Also after its first season, an enclosed tunnel structure was built over the final helix.
    In 2000, the park opened the Son of Beast, a "sequel" to The Beast. Son of Beast was the tallest, fastest wooden roller coaster, and until 2006 was the only looping wooden coaster in the world. The loop was removed after the 2006 season for maintenance reasons following an accident. It was also the second longest wooden roller coaster, designed so that The Beast retained its longest wooden roller coaster record. Son of Beast closed in 2009 following another incident, and in July 2012, it was announced that the ride would be dismantled and removed from the park later that year.
    In popular culture, R. L. Stine wrote a novel which featured the roller coaster and was named after it, simply titled The Beast. The book also had a sequel called The Beast 2.
    The 2009 season was the coaster's 30th year running since its opening. With Diamondback built, the entrance of The Beast is back where it used to be in 1979. Most of the tracks and supports have been replaced in the double helix, creating a smoother ride.

      This ride, along with the Boss in St. Louis, are the 2 roughest roller coasters I've ever ridden. The Boss seems to have strong lateral forces which jerk violently from right to left, which has caused me to slam into the restraint mechanism, bruising my thigh. But with the Beast, the violent motions are up and down as opposed to side to side. And I do remember it wrecking havoc on my back. LOL I rode it twice back in 2011, but the second ride experience wasn't quite as rough. I hope to return there sometime within the next 2 years. For this year, I'm hoping for Six Flags Great America & Cedar Point.

      Now that's an oldie that I'll certainly have to try if I ever make it out there. I also think that is the oldest operating theme park in the US. I've conquered Six Flags Great America, Six Flags St. Louis, King's Island. And now Cedar Point & Mt. Olympus Theme parks this year and I have to say that Zues at Mt. Olympus is probably the new roughest roller coaster I've ever been on. It's a very short ride and I lucked out not to feel pain, but it beat everybody else up. LOL Their Hades 360 turned out to be rather smooth unlike all the hype I had read online. I didn't find Cedar Point's Mean Streak to be as rough as others hyped either, though the people who came with did. We did, however, find their 50 y/o Blue Streak to pack much more of a punch than we thought. It wasn't painful, but for only going 40MPH, it has lots of air time and the sensation of the train coming off the track and slamming back onto the track. Pegasus at Mt Olympus was the same speed but even smaller and had surprisingly rough with strong lateral forces. It was loaded mainly with children who were moaning when it stopped. LOL

    • @wawawis
      @wawawis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know, I just revisited King's Island last fall and I didn't find the Beat to be rough at all. There was a bit of a rough spot just before you went into the first tunnel of the helix, but I only felt it during the first ride. We rode it 4 times and it was rather smooth. I'm wondering if it was re-tracked since 2011? And as for the Boss, I've heard that ride has been getting re-tracked and is no longer that rough either.

      This coaster just has age to it, so it is a little more rough on you. Mystic timbers however, being almost brand new, is so smooth. It just depends on the age of the coaster. Like the Vortex being one of this parks original steel coasters, is super rough because of age.

    A very underrated coaster. I rode it for the first time on July 19, 2016 and loved it. The ride was my 76 coaster credit. I now have 138 credits. I am a speed demon when it comes to coasters and this is a pure definition of a speedy. The lateral gs it pulls is great to. A Kings Island masterpiece.

Tons of fun having all your weight shifted into the person next to you before every turn. this ride is iconic yes. But the best wooden coaster it is not. Son of Beast was probably the best ever made but it had serious issues. It’s still amazing to think PTC or CCI or GCI or any of those companies didn’t make this monster. The blood is on the hands of the staff of Kings Island. They MADE this. Every time a park makes a coaster itself, an angel gains it’s wings. As for the next one, right now that’s Primordial at Lagoon. Glad to see the art’s not dead yet. Godspeed, Beast.

    There is just something about a wooden coaster! Perhaps it is the smell of the oil they use on the mechanical bit or the oil they use to preserve the wood longer. Perhaps it is the sound of the chain and the cracking of the wood sometimes. Perhaps it is because my grandfather took me on my first coaster when I was 7. It is the oldest still operating wooden coaster in the world I think definitely in the USA. The leap the dips at Lakemont Park in Altoona, Pennsylvania. I remember I was so scared but he held my hand the whole time and when we finished I wanted to go again and have been hooked on wooden coasters to this day. Whatever it is there is nothing better than a wooden roller coaster so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this video. It truly brought so many memories flooding back

    Me and some highschool buddies on a summer of 79, drove the 1:45 min from southern Indiana just to ride the beast. None of us had ever been on a coaster.
    Once in the queue line weaving back and forth we all started to get nervous and tried to come up with rationalizations that would seem not “too” embarrassing so we could jump out of line and go to, idk.,The Enchanted Voyage or that big tub thing that spun and sucked you to the walls and made you sick. Any thing but THE BEAST!!
    Fortunately, we “manned” up and It was wickedly fun time on our own for some 16yr olds.

    I absolutely love The Beast. When I was a teenager we had passes and would go while school was in and the park was dead. There were days where we rode this thing over and over and over without ever getting off, they'd just send the car right through the station if you wanted them to because no one was in line. The way that the cars kind of bounce or skip through the double helix in the tunnel is my favorite part of any ride I've ever been on.

    My favorite wooden coaster. The tunnel after the second lift hill is...well, a beast. One of the things I like about wooden coasters is how the ride can be rough and unpredictable. I start to notice different things that I don't on a steel coaster, which isn't me dogging steel coasters--it's just the way each type is made. The Beast still seems so fresh and exciting, even after being in operation for 40 years.
