The Beast at night is an all-time great ride. When it is dark you cannot see any other part of the park except at the apex of the two lift hills. The tunnels are all pitch black. Classic!
For its time (1979), this coaster was untouchable and remained that way for years. The sheer scale of the thing was and is incredible. Still a great ride today!
Unrequited my dad rode it when it opened (I was 3 at the time) he said it clocked at nearly 80 mph that day. Not sure how true that is, but when I was 10, I would have believed it! lol
I've ridden The Beast more times than I can remember. It is, without question, one of the greatest, most satisfying rollercoasters ever made, wooden or otherwise. You feel the speed, the power as you take the turns into the tunnels, and it'll shake the teeth right out of your mouth.
My father-in-law, an old retired farmer who lived an hour or more away, used to get a season pass and go to Kings Island *just* to ride The Beast. He'd get there and ride it all day long. The Beast is The BEST!
My friend and I would do the same thing. We would meet at 4pm after work, ride our motorcycles there and then just ride the beast until it was time to go. We did this once a week one summer.
@@lizcarter4554 That's cause when the new owners took over years ago, they wanted to make it more like Cedar Point. I wish they hadn't changed it. Kings Island should have its own identity.
I have rode this ride every year since it was open in 1979. I was one of the lucky ones that got to ride it 1st car 1st seat on the 2nd train out the day it open, but to ride this one, it's far most the best at night
Me and some highschool buddies on a summer of 79, drove the 1:45 min from southern Indiana just to ride the beast. None of us had ever been on a coaster. Once in the queue line weaving back and forth we all started to get nervous and tried to come up with rationalizations that would seem not “too” embarrassing so we could jump out of line and go to, idk.,The Enchanted Voyage or that big tub thing that spun and sucked you to the walls and made you sick. Any thing but THE BEAST!! Fortunately, we “manned” up and It was wickedly fun time on our own for some 16yr olds.
I remember when this coaster first opened. People would gather at the front gates of Kings Island waiting for the rope to drop at 10am. Then it would be a mad sprint to the back of the park where this ride was located. After that, the wait would be a couple hours for the rest of the day.
Rode this with my brother in the summer of ‘80, I was ten, it was my first rollercoaster. He made me ride in the first seat. After that, I was a coaster junkie! Come back to watch this every once and a while for the memories.
There is just something about a wooden coaster! Perhaps it is the smell of the oil they use on the mechanical bit or the oil they use to preserve the wood longer. Perhaps it is the sound of the chain and the cracking of the wood sometimes. Perhaps it is because my grandfather took me on my first coaster when I was 7. It is the oldest still operating wooden coaster in the world I think definitely in the USA. The leap the dips at Lakemont Park in Altoona, Pennsylvania. I remember I was so scared but he held my hand the whole time and when we finished I wanted to go again and have been hooked on wooden coasters to this day. Whatever it is there is nothing better than a wooden roller coaster so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this video. It truly brought so many memories flooding back
Why is everybody complaining about this ride? It may be wooden and not your type of rollercoaster! My dad even rode this ride when he was a teenager so that just shows how old it was. I think it's pretty cool they still have this coaster up and running rather than than every other new rollercoaster, I think this ride changes the whole new theme :D
Rode it the year it opened as a kid. I remember crying and not wanting to ride it, and my mom basically made me ride it. I loved it so much...rode it over and over until the park closed. Still my favorite, and I've got grandkids that can ride it now.
My dad made me ride The Beastie first. I was crying until I felt the speed of the smaller coaster...but it soon wasn't enough. One ride on The Beast and i was hooked!
I don't know if it's because this ride if getting older or because I am getting older, but when I ride this ride NOW, oh my lord, my back and neck. I LOVE this ride, but now I am hesitant to ride it.
James Allen I nearly died yesterday on this ride cause the thing that holds you in didn't clamp until we were half way up the first ramp so it might not be around much longer
I grew up riding this, and I just took my first trip back to KI in ten years today. Got the fast pass and rode this thing 4 times back to back ending it on the back car. I'm definitely feeling it! Not in my 20s anymore!
This coaster just has age to it, so it is a little more rough on you. Mystic timbers however, being almost brand new, is so smooth. It just depends on the age of the coaster. Like the Vortex being one of this parks original steel coasters, is super rough because of age.

Just rode this after its re-tracking this year. It still packs a punch, the double helix part is *VERY* intense. But the speed and length of this coaster is still incredible.
A very underrated coaster. I rode it for the first time on July 19, 2016 and loved it. The ride was my 76 coaster credit. I now have 138 credits. I am a speed demon when it comes to coasters and this is a pure definition of a speedy. The lateral gs it pulls is great to. A Kings Island masterpiece.
In the fall of '79, this was my first coaster ride ever. Careening, soaring through the forest canopy, felt primordial and vast. Thrilling. Timeless. It is one of my best memories of growing up. I'm so glad it is still there.
I got engaged on this hill ! We met at King's Island when we were teenagers and the first ride we rode together was the Beast. We found each other later in life so it was fitting for us to get engaged there.
OMG! When you hit 4:00 in the video of the ride, it is absolutely unbelievable! Speed is incredible. Being from Ohio, I have ridden this ride many times. It is also in the Guinness Book of World Records!
Ethanawesome210 i rid that on the left side seat and the most scary part of about 4:00 was that i was convinced that i would hit my head on the tunnel wall
I agree. Some of those 'other' coaster review video channels, the dude is just chattering like an idiot. I like this 'no commentary' style video as well.
This ride is the only reason we visit Kings Island. That first hill going directly through the tunnel is scary! You think you’re going to hit your head! The ride is crazy bumpy. It shakes you all around, like any wooden coaster does.
This ride, along with the Boss in St. Louis, are the 2 roughest roller coasters I've ever ridden. The Boss seems to have strong lateral forces which jerk violently from right to left, which has caused me to slam into the restraint mechanism, bruising my thigh. But with the Beast, the violent motions are up and down as opposed to side to side. And I do remember it wrecking havoc on my back. LOL I rode it twice back in 2011, but the second ride experience wasn't quite as rough. I hope to return there sometime within the next 2 years. For this year, I'm hoping for Six Flags Great America & Cedar Point.
Now that's an oldie that I'll certainly have to try if I ever make it out there. I also think that is the oldest operating theme park in the US. I've conquered Six Flags Great America, Six Flags St. Louis, King's Island. And now Cedar Point & Mt. Olympus Theme parks this year and I have to say that Zues at Mt. Olympus is probably the new roughest roller coaster I've ever been on. It's a very short ride and I lucked out not to feel pain, but it beat everybody else up. LOL Their Hades 360 turned out to be rather smooth unlike all the hype I had read online. I didn't find Cedar Point's Mean Streak to be as rough as others hyped either, though the people who came with did. We did, however, find their 50 y/o Blue Streak to pack much more of a punch than we thought. It wasn't painful, but for only going 40MPH, it has lots of air time and the sensation of the train coming off the track and slamming back onto the track. Pegasus at Mt Olympus was the same speed but even smaller and had surprisingly rough with strong lateral forces. It was loaded mainly with children who were moaning when it stopped. LOL
You know, I just revisited King's Island last fall and I didn't find the Beat to be rough at all. There was a bit of a rough spot just before you went into the first tunnel of the helix, but I only felt it during the first ride. We rode it 4 times and it was rather smooth. I'm wondering if it was re-tracked since 2011? And as for the Boss, I've heard that ride has been getting re-tracked and is no longer that rough either.
I rode this in the 80s lol. Had to drink 8 beers with my bff before I got on it. Even in my 20s this thing scared me to pieces ha. After that had a few more beers and rode it 2 more times. It's a hell of a ride.
May I use this footage in a top ten video I'm making? It's a top ten list about record-breaking roller coasters. I will give you full credit and send the link to the video when it's done.
Growing up I always had a season pass to Cedar Point. I have ridden every coaster there more times than I can count. That being said, the Beast at Kings Island is without a doubt the best roller coaster I have ever ridden.
I didn't notice the audio when I went last month so you could be right, but the beginning of the lift will always be slow since you are waiting on the next block to clear of the previous train. If that train never cleared the one on the lift wouldn't go down the hill.
Blind Assassin MGTOW what a lift hill that goes 70mph? It goes the lift goes the same speed every time. Yes it is true that a coaster can get faster as the day goes on but that’s only because the wheels start to warm up.
I grew up in Cincinnati and went to Kings Island every summer, sometimes multiple times. This video brought me right back to when I was a kid, down to having your skeleton liquified on that rough track!
Me too! One summer my cousin and I were given season passes, we'd get dropped off and just book it around the park all day riding everything over and over. We were like 10 years old. How times have changed. This was '86.
Agreed. That last corner before you hit the second lift hill is insanely fast and the helixes are just a blur. Still my favorite woodie and even better right after it rains as the friction brakes have less grab.
I used to love this ride. No loops but wooden track bumpy. 2 awesome 360 turns. Longest coaster ride I have ever been on. The first drop into the tunnel is amazing
I remember I went on the beast for the first time and I thought lt wasn’t going to be scary so I went up then I had one tear and I was Screaming so hard now I realize why it’s called the beast I love lt ❤❤❤

I have ridden The Beast hundreds of times in my life. When it first came to Kings Island my first ride was at night! Lights are so cool in the dark and the tunnels were awesome!!
I rode this in its opening season, 1980. I was 10 and barely tall enough. Must have road it 100 times. They can build 1,000 roller coasters a year for the next 100 years, and all of them will be competing for second place. The Beast will never, ever, ever, EVER be topped. #1 FOREVER!
Can you please pin me

I grew up in Cincinnati and went to Kings Island every summer, sometimes multiple times. This video brought me right back to when I was a kid, down to having your skeleton liquified on that rough track!
Me too! One summer my cousin and I were given season passes, we'd get dropped off and just book it around the park all day riding everything over and over. We were like 10 years old. How times have changed. This was '86.
This thing looks amazing
Not in the rain it's not...hella brutal for me!
This video makes the beast look a lot slower than it actually is
Agreed. That last corner before you hit the second lift hill is insanely fast and the helixes are just a blur. Still my favorite woodie and even better right after it rains as the friction brakes have less grab.
I tell people you have to personally experience this ride to understand the tenacity of it
I used to love this ride. No loops but wooden track bumpy. 2 awesome 360 turns. Longest coaster ride I have ever been on. The first drop into the tunnel is amazing
One of the longest wooden coaster out there
For me the trees make this such an awesome view throughout
the description is longer than the ride!
Max Van Rossum more like the ride is longer than the description
What's the point of abbreviating things like POV, if you're always going to write it out just next to the parentheses anyway...
That's a cool ride. Thank you.
I must visit this park, I've always wanted to ride the Beast, great video, thanks
Do it. Totally worth it. It's just a rough ride, hold on tight.
I remember I went on the beast for the first time and I thought lt wasn’t going to be scary so I went up then I had one tear and I was Screaming so hard now I realize why it’s called the beast I love lt ❤❤❤
I’m in northeastern KY. I’ve ridden this many times. It’s fantastic and being out in the trees is so beautiful. Such a cool experience! Definitely a must ride if you love coasters!
Please don't vote for that traitor McConnell! From one Beast fan to another. lol KY and America deserve better!
Man that bring back some good old memories
I remember when the Beast was first introduced, it was advertised to be the biggest, baddest, fastest roller coaster in the world.
I have ridden The Beast hundreds of times in my life. When it first came to Kings Island my first ride was at night! Lights are so cool in the dark and the tunnels were awesome!!
As I child I enjoyed the beast, as an adult this ride gave me an extreme headache getting knocked back in forth in seat💔
I Love these videos
I think the service road on the left at 2:01 wasn't there in 1979.
My home park. I've been on the Beast probably 300 times. NEVER gets old!
I rode this in its opening season, 1980. I was 10 and barely tall enough. Must have road it 100 times. They can build 1,000 roller coasters a year for the next 100 years, and all of them will be competing for second place. The Beast will never, ever, ever, EVER be topped. #1 FOREVER!
James Edgar it opened for the 1979 season
What an incredible coaster.
The Beat at night is definitely a whole other experience
Brings back a lot of memories
I'm old enough to remember how great this ride was before trim brakes and when it had original restraints.
Greetings from Germany. Yippie-yeah !
the helix is still unrivaled
