  • This is the most detailed map of the human brain ever made. And it only maps a slice of the brain smaller than a grain of rice. Here’s how scientists did this...

      There will be a point in the future (pending we don't destroy ourselves first) where we can 100% to fine detail accuracy scan and replicate the nervous system in its entirety
      Eventually we'll be able to run it as a simulation creating 'I have no mouth and must scream'
      Or imagine taking such a model and being able to 3D Bioprint it
      We'll be questioning what it means to be a person at all if we can simply scan and recreate an entire individual, memories and all
      I for one truly believe we're simply organic machines that haven't reached the state of absolute understanding in how we function. If the allure of ignorance is removed what will remain

      Okay so this actually happens. At the ages of (around) 4, 13 (/puberty) and 25 (approximately) our brains go through a neural "trimming". This is where weak connections get lost in order to strengthen more important pathways. This is why babies can tell the difference between the faces of different monkeys but adults and even young children can't. Our brain is basically seeing what skills and information is useful and what isn't to make the brain run more effectively

      Yeah 😅. That amount of brain cells and the maintenance that's required explains how much energy it consumes. The brain burns about 20% of the whole body's energy, so it has to look for ways to cut down on its energy consumption. Storing information consumes energy. Imagine you had to remember all your experiences and all your eyes saw 😅, you'd quickly burn through all your energy resources, that's why the brain is very good at forgetting, especially stuff it doesn't think is relevant.

    • @tainicon4639
      @tainicon4639 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      We had some absolutely insane advances in automated tissue processing timeline is pretty aggressive. The cost of performing that mapping would probably be on the order of trillions of dollars.
      I think in the short term what we would be better off doing is optimizing the description of a variety of smaller chunks of the brain like this. Essentially build up a collection of small pieces that we can fully describe and understand how a variety of different parts function on their own. Once we have this assembled, you could make a model of the human brain that much smaller but has a bunch of these building blocks together.
      Importantly, though maps like these, do not capture everything that’s required to make a simulation. We have the connections, but we don’t have any of the chemicals that are responsible for defining how those connections get used. We can make reasonably educated based on the shape shape of the neuron as to what the chemicals are…. But it’s still precise and large scale. Gene expression analysis shows that the brain is much more diverse than it appears to be.
      Basically, the amount of assumptions you’d have to make if you only had a map of the structure would probably result in a brain that behaved very differently than the original brain. it might be seemingly similar but have huge differences in the information processing.

    y’all are ragging so hard on the human brain. think of all the behaviors you engage in every single day-everything you do both when you’re awake and when you’re asleep-every mood you have, thought you think, desire that strikes, goal that forms, every random thought that pops into your head-all of that is the result of the specific patterns of activation in your brain. now think of how all of that-everything that is you-results from a network of firing cells that is SO dense, SO interconnected that it takes 14 terabytes of information just to roughly approximate a slice smaller than a grain of sand.
    imagine a bag of sand that is roughly the size of your brain. imagine that each grain of sand was as dense and as interconnected as the visualization we saw here-that incredibly complex network of firing cells is all that you are. in other words, somehow, out of the unfathomable number of firings of the hyper-dense, hyper-interconnected network that is your brain, *you* emerge.
    if that isn’t amazing, i don’t know what is.

      If you haven’t before… look up brainbow. It’s a really cool genetic labeling system from like a decade ago. It uses a recombinase circuit to essentially do a random color selector in the DNA. Run multiple if these at ones and you get a mix of like 3-4 colors, which is diverse enough that you can usually tell the cells apart under a microscope.
      There are some very cool full reconstructions of drosophila brains using this method.
