  • Self-support packraft trip down the Grand Canyon. Went from Lee's Ferry to Diamond Creek (226 miles) in 9 days, starting on Nov. 25th 2022. Flows were between 7,000 and 11,000 CFS.

Mostly alpacka wolverines and gnarwhals. I used a self bailer, others used decked boats

Awesome edit. 9 days is pretty fast right? 22+ miles per day? Will check out the longer video next!
I am packrafting this in 6 weeks ... slightly nervous for some of the bigger rapids, they seem quite chaotic. What level flows do you think you had? The video is labeled 4K but I wasn't sure if that was the video resolution or lowest flow :-\

9 days was really fast, but still doable. We were doing about 2-3x the pace of the other groups we passed. We had flows between 7-11,000 CFS. I found the Grand to be a friendly place to improve at Packrafting due to the relative lack of rock hazards, but holding on to your boat and paddle is an absolute must. You'll get exhausted from swimming without your boat--practice grabbing your thigh straps before kicking free of your boat after a flip

      How did it go?

@@milesvvbb it was amazing! We had a full group of 16, with roughly 6 kayakers (some switched on and off rafting vs kayaking) and 6 rafts (1-3 people each) and took 21 days. The rapids are so dynamic! I had never seen waves come and go like that, you had to boat very defensively at times. We had pretty high flows because of all the rain in March, and snow melt that started up. I think LCR was 3-4k all by itself and our average was 12,500 from that point on. Some rapids were washed out or has sneak lines, and some were BIG. Towards the end the dam started pumping out 18k and we were at like 22k by take out day. Luckily we had gotten past all the hard rapids by then, or else it might have been a very different trip! You were very right about flipping and needing to swim smart. I lost grip on my paddle in one of my longer swims (Grapevine) but one of the dudes kayaking next to me grabbed it. In my hardshell days, I had never let go of a paddle before (because you roll), so I felt dumb for that even though we had spares. It was an adventure of a lifetime and I can see why people get hooked and want to keep going back. I would love to do it again at some point. Thanks for the follow up!
