When I first got my kitten it wasn’t in my budget to get a slow feeder but she was scarfing down food so fast she would throw up. I had to get creative and literally put her in my bathroom while I prepared her food. And by that I mean I hid portions of her dry food in different spots of my apartment. When I opened the bathroom she knew what to do and it became a huge hunting game. I changed it to different spots each day because she was getting smarter😂. Miss those days

Another idea is to look for puzzle toys meant for dogs. I've found there are more options for wet food feeding that way!

I bought one of the dog puzzle feeders that requires a lot of work to access all the small food areas. I placed the dry food and covered all of it with the various devices that can be moved and adjusted as the cat figures out the puzzle. I have three cats. It took them 30 minutes to figure out the entire puzzle and eat all the snacks. I've created a monster because now they want puzzle food at least once a day. They go over to the empty puzzle, look down at it, look up at me, look down again, look up, and its clear to me I'm being “told” to fill this thing up. I had one of the timed feeders that released a bit of food at intervals. One of my cats figure out how to get his arm up into the releasing mechanism and eventually the thing broke.

I bought my cat some dog puzzles because the cat ones were too easy. well apparently after one try now the dog puzzle feeder is too easy. so I have changed to teaching her tricks for treats and she loves it. I do not leave food out 24/7. but you cannot be a minute late feeding her!! she has two water bowls that are always available. My furbaby has made such a positive impact on my life that keeping her busy and happy is a joy.

I requested this video topic a few weeks back and you mentioned you were working on it! So glad to see it live now!
Since I posted that comment, we have switched from 1/2 of a 5.5oz can of wet food 2x a day to 1/4 of the can + a few tablespoons of dry food mixed in 2x a day. I think it works similarly to a lick mat that it forces her to slow down and we've seen a major decrease in the barf.
I would prefer not to give her dry food at all but we do spend a bit more on a better quality dry food that is high in protein.
I may look into the lick mat, but nervous for the cleaning process since she tends to be a grazer after she gets her initial fill.
Thanks as always for the informative video!

I have used food puzzles for mental enrichment. My cat has learned to solve them very quickly, and treats them with thinly disguised contempt. Oddly enough, the one that works best is the cardboard puzzle with the movable interior boxes that you have in the back of your room by the cat tree. That one slows him down a little

I’ve been waiting fo a video on treat toys, puzzles and slow feeders from you guys! for so long! Slow feeders and puzzle feeders are a life saver! I have a bunch of different ones I use for treats and my cats go nuts! Currently I use slow feeder/treat balls and the trixi sliding puzzles Once they figure one out though I find I need to rotate them out. The trixie gravity feeders is great! I’ve been dying to try licki mats and the catit cup feeder too!
Licki Matt has so many options it would be cool to see a part two on just the different wet food slow feeders, just the dry food slow feeders, and treat puzzles since they’re all designed so different than on another and they keep making more designs!

My cat eats raw for her meals but she loves dry treats and kibble. I use some of these puzzles with a few kibbles in it when I leave for the days to make my leaving the house less stressful for her. Also if I know I will be home late and we’ll after her usual feeding time I will hide the food mousies around the house with dry food which she will usually find if I put them in places she’s found them before so she will not be as frantic when I get home late to feed her. We usually eat at 6 am and 6 pm. So if I leave for work at 8am or earlier and don’t return until 8 pm, which is rare, she is calmer. She is a rescue who has slowly learned to be less food insecure. Eating raw that I chop and not grind helps with the snarf and barf tendency she used to have. Even with commercial raw food I add chunks of meat and occasionally raw bone to chew on(usually chicken wings) to slow her down. She seems to really enjoy the chewing aspect of her meals. I also have an egg shaped ball that I put treats in that she has to bat around to get the kibbles out. She loves that game. I have a card board treat box with holes in the top and sides that she likes to fish her kibbles out of. Use that for when I leave the house if I’m gonna be gone for a long time or she seems extra stressed out.

The Catit digger can be used with wet food. I just use it for wet foods that aren’t too runny and my cat manages to scoop out the food pretty well. It’s a little messy but it works. Or just put wet food in a mug and put it on it’s side. Doc ‘n Phoebe have a wetfeeder mouse as well and Nina Ottosson has good puzzles which can be used with wet food. There are options for wetfood but I wish there were more.

Our boy cat figured out how to break into a $$$ bluetooth automatic feeder within a week ;D He's got 24 hours a day to obsess over it, so it didn't stand a chance. We've been thinking of attaching some kind of tube to it so the dispenser can go to an out-of-reach place, but haven't got around to engineering that yet.
I'd expect feeders where they play with kibble with their paws would end up tracking crumbs everywhere, which is going to lead to ant and roach problems

My tortie suddenly began barfing within a couple of hours after her wet food meals a few months ago. After observing the four cats eat I finally found the problem. The tortie was scarfing down her half can of wet food, then nudging others aside and eating THEIR food as well!
Solution: I broke up their half can suppers into quarter can lunch and supper meals, then hung around for a few minutes to make sure the tortie wasn't going to try to raid the other bowls. No more scarf and barf, and the distributed meals might make them feel better throughout the day as well.

I use the Catit Digger with my cat who has arthritis. To make it easier for her, I don't use the green inserts. Eventually, her arthritis will get bad enough that she'll have to stop using it but for now it gives her some mental stimulation, slows her down a bit, and forces her to move more. I also toss individual pieces of kibble or freeze-dried food and treats a few feet from her so that she has to move to get them. It helps keep her from being too sedentary without taxing her body too much.
ETA My young cat uses these 2 as well as a cat puzzle and a dog puzzle and 3 different types of lickimats, one of them ceramic. Her preference for dry food, though, is to chase a single piece of kibble. She'll try to stop it with her paws like a goalie or jump in the air to try to catch it with her paws if I toss it higher or race down the hallway after it. Sometimes she'll bat it around before eating it. I think she enjoys it so much because she doesn't get much kibble in a day, so it's something special. And it's just fun! I've started clicker training her, so I think I'm going to get a large syringe and fill it with her watered down wet food. It'll be a lot cheaper than using Tiki Cat Stix all the time.

I have that tunnel feeder from about 4m in.
My kittens seem to like it.
I extended the hopper by cutting up a 2 liter bottle and taping it on top, that way I only have to fill it a quarter as often.
One of my kittens is still getting a little rotund though, they just sit and eat longer.
I haven't had scarfing and barfing issues with or without that feeder.
I probably need to get them, and me, moving more; and maybe try one of those automatic feeders.
One of my kittens is super food motivated and the other not so much, so I'm worried the hungry one would eat it all though.

I've found bottles with a wide neck (e.g. flavoured milk) are much easier to fill than narrow ones.

Very successful as entertainment for them. Likewise the Cat Amazing sliders (cardboard cube) is very engaging. I seed a few treats on the top, then drop a handful in through the holes. They return again and again to it over a period of hours. This is known as The Box Game and if I’m not ready to enable it at 4:30 pm daily, I receive an intense campaign reminding me. I think Cher can actually tell time. Sonny, not so much.

oh man. i’m afraid this video won’t help me. is it just me, or does it seem like what works for everyone else’s cat never works for your own cat? anyway, my cat is a fast eater just like you discussed. he also gets pretty bad chin acne, so he was recommended to eat out of a stainless steel bowl. on top of that, he needs to drink a lot of water with his food (2-3x the volume of the food itself) to help with his urinary crystals. he’s got a lot of needs for a slow feeder. all together, for my cat it needs to be a wide but somewhat deep stainless steep bowl with some ridges or waves designed into it to aid in the slow feeding. it’s a specific ask and i have not found anything like this on the market yet

I feel you. I wonder if you'd have success with some of the other ideas some people here have suggested, like putting clean golf balls or other obstacles in the food. Or something like this (ceramic is also better for acne): cats.com/link/?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FSLSON-Ceramic-Shallow-Stress-Free-Kittens%2Fdp%2FB08GZ47H6W%2F%3Ftag%3Daac-youtube-20

I would first make sure that the kibble doesn't have any GMO grains that make them sick or cause them to develop skin allergies. It's so much better to buy a high-quality food and that will keep them from needing vet visits

On some u say your cats do not eat dry food , on others u seem to have no problem with feeding your cats with dry food. I did not see your cats eating from anything so what is your review based on i do not comprehend. If u give your cats one or two pieces of dry food just to show how the feeders work they re not going to die. All in all totally useless. 👎

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks; I did get my cats to "try" all of these feeders, though I agree it could have been portrayed better in the video. I wanted to be clear that they didn't use them long-term or as their sole source of food. I know this review could have been more thorough, though, and am sorry about the disappointment. You've been watching the channel for a while and have made more positive comments in the past, so you must have been very let down by this one.

Save your $$$ buying yet more over-priced plastic junk and just cut some random holes into a small recycled carboard box you can seal, and pour the dry food in the center.
