I really love your videos. We're raising pigs for the first time and are expecting 3 litters in a couple weeks. I'm excited and nervous. I've been following you for a couple yrs, but have been closely following the videos of your gilts that got pregnant and how you're dealing with it. I really appreciate all your info. Thank you so much!
Another reason to castrate piglets that I don't hear about is to keep them from becoming aggressive the older they get. The dominant male can and will kill the others.
Yes, He was noticeably larger than the others and has shown signs of dominance. He has that side cut, but it has healed up perfectly. I think he will be a good one!
Great set up, makes a huge difference. I thought for sure the blonde boar would be going to a breeding situation since they are not common, very beautiful markings. Thank you.
I've noticed that the flash lights done work as well in the drawer. I wish we had then the head lamps we have today. I have two, a 350 lumin for when I'm alone and the more normal 250- 180 for when I am with others. Head lamps would have been great for catching just the males.
Excellent! We’re homesteaders from MO. & I get why you couldn’t show every step; I just wish you at LEAST thoroughly EXPLAINED It! Please let me know if there is anywhere you can point me for some good step by step information along with THE WHYs. Thanks SO much!
I feel pretty comfortable saying that I have watched every one of your videos. But haven't ever heard you talk about using the signs. Like castrating when the blood is in the feet. To avoid excessive blood loss.
a place i worked at had problems with hernias and it was one of our boars who was the problems we sold him and no more problems at that place we castrated at birth once when i was young Dad kept putting it off and they were about 80 lbs and that was real hard to get it done
Man o live Troy! I read the one you posted.... "...for castrarion...." then the next scene shows a table saw! My imagination was racing for few seconds..... That would be a most cruel way to go.... On a table saw.....? Ooooouuuuuccccchhhhh!
Mountain Oysters for dinner tonight? lol Hey Troy, have you ever heard of the Idaho Pasture Pig? I know of at least 3 homestead channels that decided to start raising the IPP breed. Kevin & Sarah of Living Traditions Homestead, Justin Rhodes, and I think Keeping it Dutch have all went to the IPP breed. They say the IPP breed does not root up the ground as bad as the other breeds and I thought about you raising hogs in the hills. Hogs can be pretty destructive, not that you don't already know this. I don't know that much about the IPP's but if they grow fast to butchering size eating grass and don't try to flatten the hills with a lot of rooting around, I thought you might want to learn about this breed.
Yes, we researched them quite a bit. They grow a little slower than I like, but have great flavor. There are many other breeds that are like them when it come to pasture wear. These hogs should be similar so we will see how it goes!
I see you don't hold the piggers. A pigglet held correctly makes geting both nuts much easier. For most litters I butter I taught someone to hold the piggers.
Lucky little boar that got spared! I notice your sons wearing ear protection... piglets can squeal like a "stuck pig", not fun to listen to. (though you indicated they weren't as noisy as past litters)
I am an old grandpa now. I have my grandfathers knife, in my safe, that he used to 'fix' the pigs and calves. Took me back in time.
Back in the early 80's my brothers and I castrated 100s of pigs for a local pig farmer for 50 cents each. This is a chore. Brings back good memories.

I really like how your pig house has evolved
Thanks!

Hi Troy looks like you picked a good one for me Thank you.

Another great video and pleasingly appropriate background audio. Nice Job.
Thank you kindly!

We used to say a farmer was only as good as his knife is sharp.
I used my knife, never had an issue.
Good evening ,cute lil pigs
Newfane...I’m in Medina!
Welcome to Troy’s Little Shop of Horrors!😂♥️👍🙏🇺🇸
I understand that you are showing what homestead is like and castration is part of it. When I hear anything about castration, my balls hurt.
Great video and thanks for sharing

Here is our video that offers more detail.

Can you do a video on what you keep in your tool box?
This is the first time I've seen a table saw used to nut piggers.
Go with what works...

80 pounds would be difficult to do.
I liked the song at the beginning of the video, but then I started watching the video and never found out if Johnny was okay after Frankie shot him 🤔

Yes, that always raises an eyebrow or two for the viewers!
Btw...as ive said a time or 2...i love your sense of humor! Look forward to meet you in perdon one day if The Lord would allow it....

What is Troy doing wearing suspenders without a belt?
An error on my part, clearly!

What's your thoughts on the band method of castration instead of cutting?
I am not familiar with anyone successfully banding pigs. Their anatomy does not allow for that method to be effective.
How old are the piglets?
I see you don't hold the piggers.
A pigglet held correctly makes geting both nuts much easier.
For most litters I butter I taught someone to hold the piggers.
did you watch deermeatfordinner castrate a wild boar? It was fun to watch, but, he cut the video at the right spot, lol.
Anybody else notice how there are not any holes for them to breathe ..
The box isn’t air tight
When they r that little u can’t tell if they r going to be a good breeding bore right now when u find out when they r get bigger
Then they become too hard to cut! :)
R u going to breed the old pig
Possibly. She has lost considerable weight since we put her on a diet.

Yes, I have ruined my children by making them participate the last 7 years. They are shell shocked!
Hmm at the bucket feeding those boys seems very much uninterested

When u won't want to show the castration process , why u post video and waste our data and time
There is already a video on our channel of the castrations process.
Goofy song.
Evil.
I quit watching it ,if you ain't got to speak no sense watching it.
Should I post at the beginning the time stamp when I start talking? It was in there, just had to go several minutes in...
What you gotta castrate them for
Control reproduction of our feeder stock and eliminate any possibility of boar taint in the meat.
