Chicago Cubs Baseball News | Brewers win NL Central

  • After the Cubs' 5-3 loss to the Oakland A's on Wednesday, the Milwaukee Brewers officially clinched the NL Central in 2024. Fittingly, the Cubs lost on Wednesday via a blown lead from the bullpen - which has been a frequent story for the 2024 Cubs.
Anthony Pasquale and Mick Gillespie talk about how disappointing it is for the Cubs to lose the division in 2024, and miss the playoffs. They talk about if Jed Hoyer is to blame and if his job is safe. The Cubs have 8-top 100 prospects, but their entire lineup is under contract for 2025. There are plenty of questions for the Cubs to answer.

It's amazing how you mention trading some of these position players and some (not all) Cubs fans cry and say "You can't trade that guy or this guy!" But yet, they cry about losing and getting their ass kicked in their own division. Which is it going to be? Keep the same role players who truly aren't that good, mediocre at best or chase greatness. Do you want to win 84 games every year or win the division, make deep runs in the playoffs, and win another championship? I know which path I want.

They bought good bullpen arms in the first two years of rebuilding, and the SP was not ready, so they flipped them for young pieces which was right. Last year they think they are almost ready, so they gave development to bullpen and injuries happen to all their bullpen arms. What you gonna do????

It's very unfortunate the right time to trade the world series core fell in line with tge pandemic and made trading pretty much impossible. Also gave us a false sense of security and confidence in a shortened season.

I would like to see you too both be allowed to ask questions at the season handing press conference with Jed. The Chicago Cubs beat reporter seem to be pretty cowardly and like to sugarcoat everything. I do not understand why they run interference for this organization. But that’s how it goes I guess. A weak team and weak reporters.

get the prospects in there! This organization is too timid, too passive, disorganized, no plan...we need more risk, more heart, more instinct over statistics. Don't see this team being better if the same people are making the decisions.

Cubs thought they were getting the key ingredient with Counsell. They actually got the booby prize. Cubs roster is stocked with talent, but with Counsell's laissez faire, low enthusiasm attitude they're just going thru the motions. I'm hoping that Pat Murphy receives Manager of the Year selection just to rub Counsell's nose in it.

The Brewers are essentially playing with the team that Counsell managed in 2023, with the main addition being Jackson Chourio, who you could argue was indirectly influenced by Counsell's vision for player development. Pat Murphy is just continuing the momentum that Counsell built. However, the Brewers' farm system isn't very strong right now, unless they make some key trades this off-season to strengthen it.
I wished Counsell had shown more intensity, but it's understandable since this is his first year; he still needs to get a better grasp of how the organization operates. As for the Cubs, I’m confident they’ll improve next year, especially if we can secure a more reliable closer. That responsibility ultimately falls on Jed Hoyer.

The game plan is to build SP first, then hitting, then last bullpen. If you are not ready, put a lot of resources in bullpen is a waste. Most of them only has 2-4 years of good years. By the time you are ready, they will be done.

The cubs are a joke right now. 230m for this, wasting another season with no path to fix in 2025 with the current strategy and roster construction.
The brewers have dominated us for 6 straight full seasons
We had 4 good years since in 15 years, with a packed stadium, diehard fan base
How is that not a joke franchise? Theo is a magician I guess
Jed is smart guy but he thinks they can outsmart this league and you can’t. You have to have great players and good players to support the greats and the league evolves and after 2017 it’s been playing catch up

I think Jed needs to go and players need to be traded. Counsel needs to bring in his own staff and change the culture to winning baseball. The Brewers have less talent but are getting more results in the clutch. The Cubs need to sign a bonafide closer and set up guy, an elite starter and trade some position players to make way for the future which is stuck in triple A.

Glad you guys finally agree that this is NOT A GOOD TEAM. Yes, they are ok, but not a GOOD team. I've been saying this since last year. Jed tried pulling a rabbit out of his hat and failed and because of all the contracts that he put in place, it is unlikely that next year will be any better. This team is doomed to be a second or third place team for at least the next two to three years.

There's no spot? Yes there is. Sign Soto, be all-in, and have Soto & Suzuki share time between RF/DH. It's really their only move. Unless they're gonna shop Happ, Suzuki and/or Hoerner, all are returning. And they've already said that going into '25, Suzuki is gonna be the primary DH. Belli ain't opting out. Paredes & Swanson are untradeable and locked up for years. Soto is really the only logical move.
    1) Happ LF
    2) Busch/Hoerner 2B
    3) Suzuki DH/RF
    4) Soto RF/DH
    5) Swanson SS
    6) Bellinger 1B
    7) Paredes 3B
    8) Ballesteros/Amaya C
    9) PCA CF
That's about all you can do to make it as versatile as possible

The Cubs leadership (Jed & Craig, perhaps Ricketts) lack a sense of urgency. They play around the edges with getting just above-average players because Jed so concerned about making the perfect deal. Then when they need to go after a really star player, they'd go over the penalty threshold (and, oh, what a terrible thing that would be--apparently). We need at least 1 star hitter, another good starter, and a proven closer. On the way to getting there, we ought to trade either Peredes or Hoerner and put Shaw at either 2B or 3B. Suzuki should be moved to the DH, either trade Busch or Ballenger, making room for Cassie in RF. If not Cassie, then go get Soto or some other star for RF. Or alternatively, get rid of both Busch and Ballenger and go get a star for 1B. Come on, these are smart guys. They can figure this out. We just need to remember that we are the CHICAGO Cubs, not the Pittsburgh Cubs! But I have no faith in Jed. He just seems to pussy-foot around!

Here’s a question that I keep kicking around my head, where is the urgency? Did Council get thrown out of a game this year? If you were Soto why would you come here? Why would any big name come here at this point to win 75 or 80 games I do believe that the shake up needs to happen from the top down, thinking is not working I think you’re right. Old school trades are in order.

  • @sni6941

JED is not great but if you line up his moves over 4 years, the Cubs talent wise have a lot of high floor players. Just need time to see couple burst out to be high ceiling ones. The worst decisions he made was being pushed into winning every year and bought Swanson, Heldon to Happ(at that time all the media and fans were saying they should reward/heldon to their own stars etc), and resign Bellinger last season, even though he got a good deal in everyone’s eyes when he did. So I would tell Jed to screw the fans and medias, I know better than you and I do what’s best for the Cubs in next 10 years not just one year! What fans voices are always focus on one thing, one player, one game, one bad decision etc, not as a whole picture. This team is not as good as the 7 teams ahead of them, they will be closing the gaps next year when we see more rebuilding pieces to fruition. I am enjoy every game this season, no matter win or lose.

17 games below .500 in a 60+ game stretch will do that to you man. The thing for the future isn’t clear for 2025 imo either because their “kids core” have to play at least one full AAA season in 2025 barring some kind of impressive spring training by Alcantara, Shaw, Cassie, the core of this team is coming back. Happ, Suzuki, Belli is getting his $. He’s back. PCA is back. Swanson is back. Busch, Hoerner, Paredes should be up for trades 100% in the off season. Jed has a surplus of prospects but he lacks cojones man. This isn’t a big FA class. Soto is prob going back to Yankees. That leaves Alonso, Santander, guys like Bregman and possible trade target long shots like Vlad Jr who I could see sign an extension but top prospects need to go back and a couple big leaguers like a Hoerner, Busch, Paredes, PCA etc… So again, we ask Jed to do something but do you guys have the balls to trade PCA for an extension signed Vlad Jr essentially in that scenario?

This team has a heart problem. It always starts at the top. Tom is the at the top and isn't going anywhere so next is Jed. Say goodbye! The team is constructed with players without hearts or a team mentality. Counsell doesn't show any heart or concern. Maddon seemed to understand this as he always had something in mind to keep them together. We have a lot of good players but they don't play well as a team.
