This is a movie from 2006 that was a remake of a 1970s film named The Poseidon Adventure, which itself was a film adaptation of a book of the same name. The author of the book wrote it after being a passenger aboard the real ocean liner RMS Queen Mary during a storm. The ship was hit by a massive rogue wave and listed (leaned over) hard, to the point where if the ship had gone any further it would have capsized (rolled over). That's why in the 1970s movie, the SS Poseidon is based on the Queen Mary, and why the MV Poseidon from this movie is based on the Queen Mary 2. Both Queen Mary and Queen Mary 2 still exist. Queen Mary is a museum, hotel and restaurant in Long Beach, California. Queen Mary 2 is still in service as an ocean liner.

But I do wish they had expanded more on the ship, her story, when she was built, etc. I also wish they had kept her right side up for more time. A good 40 or 50 minutes of screen time. She's hit by the wave just 17 minutes into the film. Even in the original "The Poseidon Adventure", the old Poseidon is capsized 36 minutes in. If the "Poseidon" remake had added more time of her voyage, we would not only have the chance to see more of the liner's spaces and facilities, but would also get more information on the characters, which would perhaps make them better developed and more likeable, improving the film in general.
