Josef Albers Interaction of Color - Op art and relative color

  • Josef Albers is known for his endless study and teaching of Interaction of Color. We think we know what we see but color can change each other. Josef Albers is the man to tell you otherwise. In his book Interaction of Color, Josef Albers explains, but especially gives you exercises and tells you the only way to learn is to do. With his series of paintings Homage to the square and his optical illusions he is put into the art movement Op Art or Optical Art. When you look at his paintings I can understand but you also miss the point because he is telling you how it works to get you thinking instead of tricking you. Of course I make my imperfect paintings of his artwork, but it was very rewarding. Enjoy.

    I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: • How to choose the RIGH...
    In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video.
    Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

      Hi Nilufar, thanks, I love to hear this. Love for colors, even though not understanding at first perhaps, is really understood with these wonderful exercises. Ones you get it you can dive deeper. Keep painting, stay safe and have a happy day, Albert

    I made some colors exercises with squares, but i didn't know that were the same as J. Albers' work. As soon as I knew about it, I started to search and to read, and to see [and it's amazing] how colors interact. Thank you for this lesson.

    Hi there! This is so good! I found this video because I'll be taking a workshop in the Original Bauhaus exhibit. "Paper engineering from the Bauhaus"
    I remember the heatwave those days, I had just come to Berlin from Argentina, was quite a surprise.

    So enjoyed the colour combinations. I think we all have a different perception of colours, for example. If I ask my husband what do you think of this red colour? He will say it's not red it's orange!! And to me it definitely looks red.

    • @ImperfectPaintings
      @ImperfectPaintings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Maria, thanks. It was interesting to do. I know exactly what you mean with 'red'. I have this same 'problem'. I'm not a fashion lover and don't care that much about clothing and haven't developed a feel for the difference between red or bordeaux or anything in between. 2 days ago we had a discussion about it at my painting course (12 women, 1 man) it was fun and undecided. Do you paint as well? Have a nice day, Albert

    As you may know, Albers used a pencil to draw his squares and a palette knife to apply the paint unmixed. The paintings need to be seen in real life in good light, digital or print reproduction do not have the same wow factor.

    • @ImperfectPaintings

      Thanks, Pete Mc. I not even doubt when I conform that all art is better appreciated when standing in front of it. But sometimes we have to deal with the substitute. I'm happy with representations in any form on the internet in the meantime. Often, lots can be learned from it. When I, on a later moment, see the original, I'm always pleasantly surprised by the extras I discover. It's the same thing with reading about art without touching paint yourself. I just hope you're a painter. Albert

    Hello! greetings from Argentina. I tell you that I am a student of color, from the point of view of photographic art. Today I discovered Josef Albers and was fascinated by his book "Interaction of Color". I thank you very much for the videos that helped me a lot to feel the theory in a better way and I would like to ask if apart from Goethe, Itten, Kandisnki and Albers there would be any other color student who would not have to miss studying. Thank you very much and I hope you continue uploading videos !!

    I think im getting an effect of transparency. The center square goes under the film and can be seen transparently through it. Im also getting the second and third squares fading together a bit in my peripheral vision.
    Looks to me like the transparency was the aim, I might be tripping though. What interaction of colors did you intend?

    • @ImperfectPaintings
      @ImperfectPaintings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Painting, these are ideas. What you will do with them is up to you. The interaction of color is about you learning how colors work together by doing experiments like in the book titled like that by Josef Albers. Hope this helps, Albert

    (i have no reason to make this comment, just sounded interesting, go to 2:42 for context)
    The most common answer to the sky being blue is;
    "Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time. Closer to the horizon, the sky fades to a lighter blue or white."
    this comment is pointless

      Hi HyperspacePotato, thanks anyway for telling. And sometimes the technical correct answer isn't always the correct answer 😉👍 it was rhetorical in a way I guess? Bye, Albert
