You guys are my favorite guitar shop. What would you say the biggest difference is between Taylor and Martin? I just bought a Martin and I love it but it’s different to play.

    • @johnwashburn3793
      @johnwashburn3793 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the biggest difference is about 141 years. Martin began in 1833 and Taylor was started in 1974.
I will agree with what was said about Taylor guitars here, but I don't like the tone or the neck of any Taylor that I have experienced. Depending on which Martin you have, keep it properly humidifier and play it about a year and go have a tech check it out.

I’m from PA so when I went to get my first high end acoustic, I was going to buy a Martin. I tried many, and I just couldn’t find one that really fit me. Then I try to Taylor and for all of the reasons you guys just stated I went with a Taylor. I have a 912 CE and a 414 CE. I finally did find that Martin I was looking for it was a 000-28 modern deluxe. I love my acoustic collection. Great video!

I bought a D28 modern deluxe after saying I'd never buy a guitar with a carbon fiber Bridge plate, or carbon fiber anything. I ate my words after hearing and playing it.

Congratulations to Shawn on being named Rolling Stone's #46 Greatest Guitarist of all time.
Better than Eric Johnson. Better than Steve Lukather. Better than Steve Vai. Better than Merle Travis. And infinitely better than Andy Summers.
Take a bow, Shawn. You've earned it.

Personal preference usually wins out. Looks and then tone. I started on Taylors then the more skilled I got moved to Martins. Basically, because of tone and no cutaway shapes. Taylor did kill it with their small body GS-Mini though. I was influenced to change by seeing many of the Pro's, who I favor, playing a Martin. But, if you really love your guitar that's really all that matters.🙂🎶🎸🪕

Complimenting the ES Pickup system....really. Yank out this piece of crap-and put a Fishman Prefix Pro or Blender. OR, settle for less, and continue pushing a 'hack' pickup system. I'll be the first to walk out of yer show.
More 'propeller head' amateurs pushing Taylor's crap ES pickups; buy a $ 2,500.00 Taylor- and keep a 5 cent pickup in it. Genius.

"I would NEVER......." (sneering look from corner of eye)
****Jonathans telling of that was glorious****
Started with Gibson, moved to Martin.
I have tried a bunch of Taylors, including several 800 series owned by my guitar mentor.
Compared to my Martin D35, they are brick heavy. Heavier than my J50 too.
They sound good, no issues there. They just don't have the feel I like.
The only exception was a Taylor 350 12 string but it had finish lifting problems so I left it where found.

I saw a sweet Old Taylor SB1, Taylors Solid Body Electric Venture in the past and still debating on whether to go back and bring it back home, On acoustics the best First Guitar is a Taylor Baby, Great Projection Sound & Tone from something so small is Special. Personally I had a 65 Dove as my Go to Acoustic but traded it and now playing a 85 Alvarez Yairi DY85A that still Looks New but plays like it is 40 years aged to perfection, But Kauro Yairi passed away about 2015 so he isnt making any although his Company Yairi Guitars in Japan is still going. Taylor is a Reflection of Bob Taylor who was a Good Man with a Great Product he keeps working to make Better Each Day

Taylors are overrated and overpriced, yes it's true the sound is great but there are many guitars out there with great sound and quality for a lot less. I've owned Martins, Taylors and one guitar that truly is a hidden gem that I find myself playing more over my Taylor/Martin is the Dean Rosewood Supreme... every time, it never fails when I play around other guitarists holding a Martin or a Taylor they can't believe my Dean sounds better and I can see how their brains can't comprehend that a $400 guitar outperforms theirs in sound, plus it's a good looking guitar too.

I like the way Taylor’s play but I don’t like the fact that 90% of them have cut away bodies. I don’t play up the fretboard and I just don’t like the look. I’m old fashion in that way. I’m also partial to drop shoulder guitars and they don’t make one.

I got my first acoustic guitar just over a year ago. I went into the shop with a few models from various brands in mind and came home with one of the Taylor Academy series guitars. A year on and I’m very happy with my choice. As a beginner it was very tempting to spend less but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s just a really nice thing, easy to play, stays in tune and sounds great

One weekend while out-of-state my family and I dropped into a small town church, of course sitting in the last pew; and also (of course, cuz it happens to me at my church - not complaining now...) the guitar player was sitting way way back on the platform. But when his instrument came through the system I knew he had a top-shelf guitar. Only by making out the shape of his headstock did I realize he had a Taylor. Yep it was clear as a bell with a nice bouncy low-end.
Recently sat down with an open pore Taylor auditorium model (virtually no finish on it at all), it was everything Sean mentioned and had a $800 tag on it. I looked all over for a 'used' marking on it but found none.
Sadly my buying days are over but compared to the $2700 Martin I played in the same shop a month earlier ( OK I guess, but meh...), that Taylor definitely made me reassess the brand.

I don't care for the Taylor tone, or the neck (I rarely play electric guitars).I'm not really into bling. I don't work on my own guitars.
Plug and play, I'll give you that. I have never played a Taylor that grabbed my soul like that beefy necked Martin CEO 7 I bought from you guys about 14 months ago. It has the mojo! And the tone. And a neck to wrap my hand around...

I bought a 314ce back in 09 and immediately I had issues with the Taylor Expression pickup system. After a while I followed up with Taylor's customer service and a couple days later they followed up with a pretty standoffish response that indicated they really weren't interested in repairing the pickup system. After doing some research I found the Taylor Expression system is very problematic and once I spoke to my local Taylor authorized repair shop they told me they have a box of Expression systems because the system is bad. The shop told me that Taylor has never wanted to acknowledge the problem, which confirmed my experience with contacting customer service. Eventually the shop recommended a few different replacement pickup systems. I went with a K&K system. In hindsight I wish I looked harder at Gibson and Martin. The guitar plays well and it sounds good, but the customer service left a lot to be desired.

I have 2 Taylor BTO's - love them both. To me, the west coast acoustics (Taylor, Bedell) have a more piano-like quality to them vs. the others. If you ever get a chance to go to San Diego and take the Taylor factory tour, do it. Bob has created an amazing manufacturing process. It is truly fascinating how they blend art and science to make them.

Owned a 410e dreadnaught for several years, a 618e Jumbo and 414ce Nylon String. Great Guitars!! Necks are very comfortable. I traded in my 410 in for a D28, then traded in my 618e for Martin 00018 modern deluxe. Then traded in my 412ce for Gibson J45. Prefer the Martin sound over Taylor and Gibson acoustically not plugged in. Taylors are very easy to work on set up and are very pretty visually. They sound fantastic plugged in.

I picked up one of Taylor's innovative guitars, an 816ce Builders Edition on sale at GC. Traded in my Academy 10e and a Mini-e Rosewood to make it a bit more affordable :D That odd sound hole does introduce another angle of sound, it's damn nice imo. The 816cs BE also has the satin finish, feels amazing and allows the wood to resonate through the guitar and your body when playing it.
Sadly there were a few high frets, but Taylor support is on the ball and taking care of all that...missing my Taylor as it's being worked on in Cali :(

So I am a Taylor guitar fan boy, with 2 Taylor t-shirts to back it up. As a matter of fact, I am getting a new GS Mini being delivered today. I had the Koa-e plus with the ES2 system as my first guitar back in June of this year, and loved everything about it, except for the plastic knobs of the ES2 system which felt cheap and fragile to me and I ended up returning it. I have read enough negative reviews from customers saying that the only weakness of Taylor Guitars is their pick up systems. As a beginner guitarist, I love the feel, action, and playability as well as the ergonomics of the Taylor guitars especially the GS mini's as I am on the short side. I know that the quality is always top notch, so I opted for an acoustic only without any Taylor electronics built in. If I ever get good enough to perform at an open mic night, or do some busking, I will have a guitar shop install a Fishman or LR Baggs pickup for me which a lot of people are happy with over the ES 2 or ES Go.

After a car accident left me with enough money to bring home a beautiful Taylor 314 3/4 that had hooked me @ my local shop, this guitar has been with me thru a marriage, a divorce, being homeless and life in general. Every time I pick it up I hope to be good enough to deserve it. Oh and Bob Taylor signed it (again) at NAMM.

Agree completely. I started on electric as my main instrument from day one and have fought a bunch of acoustics that just didn't work for me. I now have two Taylors and sure wish I had pulled the trigger on one a long time ago. I'd add consistency. I've never picked up a Taylor that was a stinker - anyone off the wall is built to a standard that assures it will just ... work and play great.

I just got my first acoustic; a used Taylor 114CE and so far I love it. When I had it set up my tech explained the neck adjustment system to me. I would say though it's not exactly like an electric in that the action on any acoustic I played was higher and takes some getting used to.

Yes. The bolt on neck was introduced over 20 years ago. They use precision shims to get the perfect neck angle and make neck adjustments quick and easy by an authorized tech. Are dove tail glued necks better? It’s all subjective. The bottom line is if you like the way a guitar sounds and plays then it’s the guitar for you.

Just to add on: from the late 1960s, my dream guitar was a D-28 which I played at Westwood Music in Los Angeles. Restarted playing during lockdown and when it was cool to go to a guitar store, I went to purchase an HD-28. While there, I played my first Taylor, an eye opener for its easy to fret neck, then a couple others. Liked the maple backed one, the 614ce BE, but I was still determined to get that Martin. Made three trips to the store, comparing those two, a couple other Taylors, and a J-45. Also had the salesman play them all so I could hear them directly. About three hours total to say, “Yup. To my ears. And with that great neck, I guess it’s the Taylor for me.”

Only way I'd ever buy another Taylor is if they offered their high end models without their awful pickup system. Let me put an LR Baggs anthem in it and be set. My Custom Shop Martin has an LR baggs pickup that destroys the 324ce I traded for said Martin. I miss the 324ce but I don't miss how bad it sounded plugged in.

Ok, I’ll get flamed for this, but I HATE the expression system from Taylor. I have a 314ce with the Fishman that is freaking awesome. I then bought a K24ce because I love the Koa, and the expression system sucked royally. I used it only as a recording guitar and mic’d it. A few year later, I put the expression system 2 in it thinking that would help. Nope. Fast forward a few more years, and I told a Taylor repair shop that I wanted an anthem system. The guy was worried that it would drop that resale value…..don’t care. Don’t plan on resale…just wanted a guitar I could play live. BEST thing I did for me. It sounds great and now I can play it live without it sounding like crap. I had tried a LR B. Preamp even with the expression system, but could not get it to sound right. Just my 2c, but it worked and now I have a Koa that sounds amazing.
