MEDEVAC mission in Afghanistan, without a hoist. Polish Special Forces REAL WAR FOOTAGE

  • This is a mission that took place back in 2011 in Afghanistan. We got a call for an urgent MEDEVAC for Polish Special Forces. They stated that a hoist may be required. The hoist in my aircraft was broken and the second ship in my flight didn't have one at all. We responded anyway. The original plan was to drop our Medic and Special Forces dude off at the top, have them hump down the ravine and bring the wounded back up. After about 15 minutes our medic called us on the radio and stated that it would be impossible to bring him back up. So I took off and looked for the best spot to pick them up. The sides of the hill were coming up so landing was not an option without my blades impacting the ground. So...hovering was the only option. We worked with the Polish Special Forces on a regular basis so we were able to speak to them after the mission and recovered the still photos from the video.

I'll watch a video a day and keep commenting to support the algorithm. I like your stuff.

I've been sluffing off but have a few in the queue. Nothing personal... just going a bit crazy at the moment @@30SecondsOutPopSmoke-gg7cl

Something I've always wondered ( I've never piloted any type of aircraft), how do you maintain a stable enough hover to load a person in the back..is there automation by the aircraft computer or is it fully manual control.
Also, how does the rotor wash bouncing off the ground affect your stability that close to the ground.
    ** I never served in Afganistan, I was deployed to Iraq 2005 & 2007 with the Australian Army - Aslav (LAV-25) Driver / Gunner..👍

I do believe I squeezed the black right off the controls that day. 😂 it’s not that easy! However, when hovering closer to the ground it’s a little easier on the aircraft. What I mean is it’s called in “ground effect” in which the rotor wash blowing down bounces off the ground and comes back up and meets the other air coming down creating a cushion of air. Once this happens it requires less power from the aircraft.
The real key to doing this in a larger aircraft with a lot of blind spots is crew coordination. I’m covering the right drift and left seat is calling out left drift, and the crew chief is calling all other drift. Everyone is talking.
Our medic at the end of this was smoked! Carrying everything down the mountain his legs were like jello.
Thank you for your service mate!
      Cheers!

@@30SecondsOutPopSmoke-gg7cl Thanks for the reply..... I've heard of ground effect regarding long distance flights of un-powered gliders, so I can see how this would work with a chopper.
Either way looks like you had some fancy flying going on and I enjoyed the clip, thanks again for the explanation and also your service too...have a good one..👍

Anyone make any polish jokes that flight or would that be deemed insensitive? Sorry, I am an old grunt with bad and mostly black or poorly timed humor lol.

No, we did not. We worked hand and hand with the Polish and they saved our tails more than once. Sebastian in the movie is Polish and was trained at the US Special Ops Medic school here the US. Nothing but respect for them. Thanks for the question.

@30SecondsOutPopSmoke-gg7cl it was more of a joke than anything. Ever do any flying in the kandahar area? I was in the horn of panjwai at the same time your videos were filmed. They are from 2011 right?

@@3-2bravo49 I know you were joking. Yep, 2010-2011. Never made it to Kandahar
