HOW THE BEARS-PACKERS RIVALRY GOT STARTED // The NFL's Biggest Rivalries: Bears and Packers
Packers and bears have a frenemies situation going on. They hate each other but One cannot exists with out the other. I’ll try to remember that next time I see bears fans in Wisconsin
I'm a Bears fan, I can agree, Bears/Packers are an embodiment of Yin/Yang.
Yep hate the Bears but I'm glad they are there. I think both fanbases can agree the Vikings can burn.
yeah I hate the Packers but i have a ton of Packer friends. Without both teams, the NFL wouldnt be what it is today.
I hate the packers but Wisconsin definitely deserves a team
i’m very disappointed that this video didn’t get as much attention as it deserves! an amazing production! and great research!
Thank you so much!! That means a lot!!
Great video but it’s not really a rivalry anymore
@@AllSportsHistoryconsistently mispronouncing Illinois killed the spread of this video
Hey Sports Historians! What did you think about the Packers being thrown out of the league? Let me know in the comments!
*CORRECTION*
I added an “S” to the end of Illinois, it should be a silent “S” so that’s my bad!
that is ok. the extra S is for Sh@t
Props for fixing your MAJOR mistake here. th-cam.com/video/ZICode0BmUU/w-d-xo.html
I was born and grew up in Illinois, so when I heard you say that, I cringed a little, lol.
As a Wisconsin native the way you pronounce “Racine” is hilarious 😅😭
Adding the Vikings and the Lions results in the "Black and Blue Division", ouch!
One of the most historic and cherished rivalries in National Football League History, The Original Decatur Staleys turn Chicago Bears, versus The Indian Packing Company turn Green Bay Packers. A Rivalry For The Ages. The AFPA's Charter Members.
Holy crap, I laughed so loud at the jokes! And you tell them with such a straight face!
Thanks, at least someone enjoys my humor!
I love your football videos you do an amazing job keep up the great work.
Thank you so much, glad you love them!!
Good content. Please remove the “noise” in Illinois. Thanks
Thanks for the heads up on the pronunciation!
@@AllSportsHistory keep the noise in bro dont let this fella get you down
Let me guess… you’re American and didn’t know how to pronounce Illinois??? SMH
@@bonzii420 The 'S' is silent.
Loved this video as a Packer fan on the west coast of Vancouver Island (pre Brett Farve) until now. I have been to Lambeau Field 3 times. Church. Packer fan or not it is the Mecca of football trips.
I'm a full blooded Chicago Bears fan. Da Bears won 8 NFL championships and one Superbowl
Skol Vikings
I'm a Bears fan too, and fuck the Vikings. Lions alright though, I appreciate 2 free wins every season.
Bro You litterly made an amazing video and people still complain about something lol I thought Illinois was pronounced with the S ! Lol great vid man
Haha thanks man, appreciate it! Gotta practice my silent “S” more.
Awesome video can't wait for tomorrow's game bears vs packers
#GoBears
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!!
How the "rivalry" ended. 2 words: BRETT FAVRE. As a packer, he was 13-3 in Illinois
Illinois that includes one game at U of Illinois ' s Memorial Stadium
I know a lot of this history - after years of research - your research in this post breaks A LOT of new ground sir. Many thanks. Any who are Bears or Packers fan who do not know this story are not real fans - IMO.
Wow, thank you! I appreciate that! I try to do as much research as I can and find stuff that people may or may not know. So that’s great to hear :)
@@AllSportsHistoryy men’s name was petty😂
u do good work bro...not sure why u aint got more subs, but u got mine

Someone: the bears Packers game is about to start me: I want the bears
I've heard that Halas had an ulterior motive for getting the Packers out of the league. He wanted a player from Notre dame, "Hunk" Anderson, and in the days before the draft, college graduate players could sign with any team they wanted. Halas was convinced that Anderson would sign with the Packers since he and Curly Lambeau were collegiate teammates in 1918, and Anderson was from the UP of Michigan, closer to Green Bay than Chicago, so he saw taking the Packers out of the league was also going to open him to signing "Hunk" Anderson, which he did.
Yeah during my research I found a lot of conflicting information about what really happened. The Packers official team historian believes a lot the stuff about Halas purposely trying to get the Packers out of the league is all myth and blown out of proportion. Here’s the article about it if you’re interested :) www.packers.com/news/george-halas-was-a-great-friend-to-the-packers-to-a-point
Great rivalry
I always thought there was a similar situation with Red Grange , and I read an article about this rivalry some years ago I was always under the impression it started when one of the lineman of whichever team struck a lineman of the opposition and broke his nose and thats when the rivalry started . I'm also thinking whoever had received the broken nose returned the favor the following year .
Hilarious how in the early stages of the League you could get penalized for bringing in amateurs, whereas today it's colleges that are penalized for players "professionalizing" themselves by hiring agents, selling merch, etc.
More importantly, though, It's too bad the NFL does not have rivalries that make the entire football world sit up and take notice the way European soccer (i.e., World Football) does. When Barcelona play Real Madrid, for example, literally BILLIONS of people the world over watch and/or pay attention to the result--one which will be relived and retold for decades to come. When their equivalent of the Super Bowl is contested between a pair of the very oldest clubs it becomes a thing of legend forever. Meanwhile, only Central Division partisans really care about the Bears/Packers rivalry anymore, we don't all relive the 1958 championship game anytime the Giants meet the Colts, or--relatively more recently--the Jets and Raiders renew THEIR 60+ year-old rivalry. They don't even SHOW the movie "Heidi" on TV anymore. And while I appreciate the game well enough, I'm sorry it's so completely a product of slick marketing that the game's history is now all but relegated to such things as yTube channels and the archives of history. Archives only us zanies care very much about. Great vid, btw.
The first meeting in 1921 featured a thirty minute third quarter fistfight. What has changed?
🐻⬇️
McMahon getting slammed on his shoulder ha ha ha
Never forget that game!!!
Charles Martin will always be remembered for that!!!
Awesome
well he dead now
Go bears 🐻⬇️
Pro Bear fan but tolerant of the Packers. Even so, the stain of Charles Martin wearing a hit list towel hanging from his waist listing the numbers of the Bear players he intended to injure during a certain game still makes me sick. Later in that game a full 2 to 3 seconds after Bears QB Jim McMahon threw a pass down field this same idiot Charles Martin picks up McMahon in a bear hug and body slams him to the turf. After.the resultant shoulder injury caused by this incident McMahon was never the same and his career slowly faded. These Packer teams of the 1980s and their openly dirty players, Charles Martin and Chuck Cecil in particular, are the reason the I’ll never route for the Packers in any game, which sucks because I’ve loved certain Packer players over the years like Antonio Freeman, Darren Sharper, Reggie White, and Aaron Rogers. Oh well..
No hate it just really bugs me at 2:26 you said Illinois with the s but the s is silent
Yeah I messed that up, totally my bad.
It’s fine we all make mistakes
By any chance you can Do Oilers and Steelers rivalry
Yeah that's a good topic for a future video for sure!
What rivalry? It was one sided in the 70s Bum Phillips could never kick that door down
Curly Lambeau passes away in 1965
George Halas passes away in 1983
Illinois(e) lol jk great video
Haha I know I know, thanks!
@@AllSportsHistory yea no problem
I'm not sure I knew the story of illegal players. Sucks the rules were as such, but at least the Packers are still around! Just wish I was a little bit older to see then play at old cramped County Stadium
Good can not exist without evil.
Both teams being good at the same time didn’t really happen very often. In fact whenever one team was great the other sucked.
Yeah that was a surprising thing to discover looking back at their histories, especially for such a huge rivalry.
Yeah best rivalry ever tbt
So that's how the NFL all began. From factory companies.
GO BEARS!
Another pronunciation issue is when pronouncing the Wisconsin city of "Racine". The actual way to say it (from a local) is not Ruh-cine, it is said Ray-cine.
Ah I see, thank you! I appreciate the help on that, I gotta get better learning the correct pronunciation.
@@AllSportsHistory no worries, as a native I know that there is plenty of cities around that if said based on spelling, you will get nowhere near how its actually pronounced.
It really is a love hate relationship this rivalry is. Like if we are not going to win the division, the packers better win it.
Hell no. Fucking cheeseheads have won enough games for a while.
Disagree. FTP
The oldest is actually Bears vs Cardinals as they first met in 1920 but....
Sure, but the Cardinals haven’t been much of a rival to the bears since the 1950’s.
Exactly , the title is oldest rivalry . Packers Cardinals rivalry no sir .
Go pack go😈
The Chicago Cardinals also lent the Bears money in 1932.
How did the Vikings become rivals?
Because they play twice a year, same thing with the Packers and Lions
There is no “S” in the pronunciation of Illinois
Thanks, yeah I’ve been made aware from the other comments haha.
Contrary to popular legend, The Green Bay Packers didn't get the inspiration for their colors from my beloved Notre Dame. Their Ugly Yellow and Green colors come from the dandelions that grow on Packer football fields in the summer because I hate them! ...BOTH! Have a nice day. =].
This isnt a rivalry anymore. Packers win all the time so those who still think it's a rivalry need to get their facts straight.
I’m sorry what? Gaylord Peach StenchCum scored the first touchdown!?
GO BEARS
S is not pronounced in Illinois. Come on man.
I know I suck
I very disappointed about how he says Illinois
Me too.
@@AllSportsHistory jk idc really
All good, I love a good troll comment!
Skol Vikings
🟢🟡
Your story was more like they were all hugs and kisses instead of rivals.
If you’re interested you can read more about how a lot of the early rivalry stories were basically made up to sell books. Like how Halas supposedly got Green Bay kicked out of the league. www.packers.com/news/george-halas-was-a-great-friend-to-the-packers-to-a-point
Other than that, I’m sorry my video disappointed you.
Someone teach them not to say the “s” at the end of Illinois. It’s not pronounced.
5:58 his name is fucking what....
LMAO 🤣
😁😅😁😄😅😁 OMG I didnt notice the first time .
Gaylord was later jailed for murdering his parents, but was acquitted by a jury of his peers who all admited they would've killed their parents too.
Acme Packers sounds terrible 😖
Not a fan
It is not the oldest rivalry it's the bears cardinals
Technically yes, but it hasn’t been much of a rivalry since the 1950’s. They don’t even play each other every year, and I’m not sure that many fans today even consider it an actual rivalry.
The Cardinals were actually established before 1900
This is probably the NFL's most one sided rivalry.
Uhhh what? The all-time series is 105-95-6 in favor of the Packers. It's been one sided in the last 30 years.
@@silverguard8105 I was born in 1991 so it has been pretty lopsided in Green Bay's favor as long as I can remember watching.
Shitcago bears #gopackgo
The Bears eat poo for breakfast.
