It's amazing to me that, as far back as he goes, Joe Sullivan's playing always sounds fresh and surprisingly modern. Greatly under-rated artist who was as distinctive as they come. Thanks so much for posting!
Thank you for posting this interview with the great Joe Sullivan. When I was in college, my dad occasionally used to travel to San Francisco on business. As a huge Sullivan fan, he would buy a bottle of bourbon to take to Joe’s apartment. The two of them would drink together and Joe would play the piano for my father. What a thrill for my dad! There is a wonderful poem by British poet Roy Fisher entitled “ThenThing about Joe Sullivan” that captures the essence of his style. Joe Sullivan was a gem.

What a treat! I just read a piece about Sullivan, one of dozens of essays by Orrin Keepnews in "The View From Within." Thanks for posting.
Thanks for posting this. I just became familiar with Sullivan. Fantastic stride style. A real revelation.
Sixty years ago yesterday!
True Master.
A landmark
such a hip TV show..
Interesting program. 2 originals by Sullivan, 2 standards by Fats, and one by Eubie Blake.
