My husband and I have an afternoon tea every Saturday at home. My Mother did the same. When it is spring or summer, we take it in the garden. It’s an English tradition that I like to keep going. We do not always have scones, tomorrow we’ll be having hot cross buns as it is Easter weekend.

I work in hospitality and spend most of my time in central London. Afternoon tea is a serious profit earner!! The GM of an extremely well-known hotel once told me that his costs, on average per person, are about £3.00 for afternoon tea. At the time, he was selling it from £63.00 upwards. He also said, that as a general rule, he’s booked out about three months in advance.

How do you know that Geoff? My source of information (told to me in 2019) is the GM (general manager) of the entire hotel. He’s not the gm of one department. Maybe the £3.00 is now £5.00, but either way, it’s still a serious profit earner.

I defy anyone to eat that sort of teas followed by a three course dinner! The current afternoon tea menus are primarily aimed at tourists and a great money spinner between lunch and dinner.

My mom & I did Afternoon Tea at the Ritz because we figured it was the step under having at it at the palace 😂 I could not believe the level of fancy -- I'm someone who really enjoys a luxury experience and that was to a level I was almost uncomfortable with. There was always like 4 servers around and as soon as one thing was gone from the platter, they refilled it. It was very intense but of course an unforgettable experience. This brought back found memories. My father was from England, sometimes we had afternoon tea, but we always ate our evening meal at 8:00 PM. It was a lot more casual at home than it was when visiting his side of family abroad. After watching this, I am tempted to start the afternoon tea ritual again. $217.00, pocket change! Sheesh! However, if cost were not an issue, I would love to be at the Four Seasons. The Idea of eating while smelling perfume . . . I can see and hear my father saying, "Blasphemy!" while fluttering his lashes, furrowing his brow and shaking his head with incredulous distaste. He was a wonderful man. Thank you for the memory. "No, it's baby spinach!" Adorable kids!
My daughter and I had afternoon tea at Kensington Palace in the Orangery. That was pre COVID. It was delicious and the staff were very friendly. It was all just wonderful. Most of those we met having tea at Harrods were tourists - no Londoners.
I enjoyed your video, thank you. You mention etiquette in relation to drinking tea, Debretts (the go to reference for etiquette) says that the Cornish method of putting jam on first is the way to do it.

I had my best London Afternoon Tea with the family of my B&B facility 20 years ago. The mother talked about her nervous breakdown the night before when the daughter came back drunk from a X-Mas party. We also had some kind of punch with "a little drip of Whisky" while the "drip" wasn't that little in fact 😉. I loved the scones and egg and mayo sandwiches a lot.
Ooo great to see - I love treating myself to an afternoon tea in London, it's a must when my friends/family visit from the US. Looks like you had a wonderful time.
You know what I'd love to see a video of? Charming, chic and affordable accommodation in Nantucket! It's on my bucket list, along with Martha's Vineyard and P-Town but HOLY SMOKES-- the prices! Everything is expensive, there just doesn't seem to be anything reasonable in price. I'm very well travelled and always hunt down beautiful, gorgeous hotels and airbnb's for prices that are 'do-able', but Nantucket's average ballpark is just not justifiable for me. All the places priced as I would hope are either far out of the main centre or incredibly ugly and shabby. I search for videos on this and they're hard to find. I wish someone could explain why that particular area is priced so impossibly high, certainly when you see what little you get for your money. Hope you'll get to return to England and discover new places to enjoy soon. :)
I did this just once years ago, at the Dorchester hotel, with my Father who was elebating his 85th birthday at the time. This was a champagne afternoon tea, and I remember it cost me 45 pounds per person at the time. I admit that it was a nice experience, and maybe forva super special occasion, it's a nice thing to do,but on the whole, I personally find it a bit overrated.
I love afternoon tea , I have been to many nice places where afternoon tea is served . I’ve never paid £167 . I would do without the Champagne . The Langham , the Ritzz , the Dorchester , Harrods , Fortnum and Mason, the savoy , are all great places to take afternoon tea. Expect to pay around £ 45 to £ 80 .
Great video. Self ridges sounds like a great option. When I was in London I tried the afternoon tea at Harrod’s. It was super nice and delicious for £65. Also we stayed at an Airbnb in Pilmico. There was a bakery shop in the neighborhood that served a super afternoon tea for £25.
I love taking afternoon teas wherever I go, especially in Britain and my dream is to have it at the Ritz. I also love to host teas at home. Looks like you all enjoyed your afternoon experience.
I’m glad you enjoyed London teas. I’m British and think one of our best traditions is the afternoon tea. Informative video and I really like the ladies voices it’s so clear and each word is well pronounced. Love to see more of your videos. So long!
I’m surprised you didn’t go to fortnum & mason. Their ground floor cafe is really affordable but delicious scones as they’re freshly baked daily. I reckon Selfridges aren’t 😅
WOW!! London first trip what a adventure. Love the history tour and the culture. Y’all make vacation so beautiful and enjoyably. Dessert OMG! The girls just to cute. Thanks for sharing y’all first family vacation in 2022.
Thanks so much!! Yes afternoon tea is such an affordable luxury (if you skip the champagne lol) it's definitely fun to incorporate little splurges like that on a vacation!
If I can give another afternoon tea recommendations, I highly recommend Brigit's Bakery Classic Afternoon Tea Bus. The food was delicious, it gives you a great tour and was one of my favorite things to do while in London.
I really enjoyed afternoon tea in the Thames Foyer at the Savoy(pre-COVID). The setting is magical and the service top-notch. I also treated myself with a glass of champagne since I was celebrating my 50th bday on the trip. Very pricey(£95), but worth it!😍
Throughout my life I have spent some memorable afternoons having tea or coffee with friends and loved ones. You all looked as though you were enjoying your experience. Pleasing video, thank you for sharing...
Thank you for this lovely review. I had afternoon tea at the Savoy last week, and it was lovely. I think it was about £100 per person, but that didn’t include champagne which was mega expensive a glass. I’ve had afternoon tea at the Ritz too, and that was also lovely. There is a strict dress code for both, and you have to book both months (months!) in advance. In fact to meet the demand, afternoon tea starts at 11 am, for both, and you book a time slot. They are very good at getting you through and out before you know it, so the next group can come in. It doesn’t feel rushed, but they definitely get you in and out in your allotted time. The worst cream tea I had had to have been at the Royal Lancaster Hotel. It was a long time ago now ( well I’d gone there to meet Princess Diana, who was attending a charity event, so that will tell you how long ago it was ). Afterwards I stayed on for a Devon cream tea - it was really reasonably priced - until it became apparent it didn’t actually include the pot of tea, only the scones , cream and jam. Incidentally regarding the cup holding ‘etiquette’ - I’ve seen members of the royal family hold the cup with fingers through the handle, so I wouldn’t worry too much about what the etiquette expert says.
I agree on the fingers through the handle thing; that is a long forgotten "etiquette". Holding the other way is so easy for the cup to slip and you would spill all over your lap. A lot of these etiquette rules were made back in the day when teacups for a lady would be very small.
I just found all of YOU! I love y’all!!! I love the Family vibe, your beautiful narrating and all the historical research!!! Thank you for sharing. I am definitely prescribing! God bless y’all and Have FUN!! 🙏🏻☺️🌟🌟🌟🌟☺️🙏🏻🎉

Love your videos 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I lived in England for 10 years, now back in India but I have to have my afternoon tea with scones…but if you really want to enjoy English tea you must visit Cotswold villages where they have these small boutique tea shops
One of my favorite memories from childhood is having High Tea at my great Aunts house. High Tea is more of a meal and totally awesome! Not as posh, of course.
High Tea is the working class version, I loved that you mentioned how much fun it was, what a great memory to have! It's like that scene in that cheesy Titanic movie where Rose went to dance and drink and run amok with the 'lower classes' below stairs. Sure, the upper classes have their own ribald indulgencies but as you will surely attest, it's just not the same ;)
@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 The High Tea is definitely not just a working class thing. The aristos serve it too but with more elaborate food like cold filet beef, poached/smoked fish, blinis with caviar, fancy savory finger sandwiches, scones and pastries all taken with pots of teas and buckets of bubblies. The High Tea at Fortnum & Mason is the one to do - not cheap but very good value for money. I think it is about £75 per person.
What lovely daughters you've got !! They are so cute, adorable & polite !! Yes, afternoon teas run about £25 to £85《 champaign 》A very good video with the history of how afternoon tea started ! But,you should had visited British owned hotels ,or cafes for that purpose to be more proper !! Langham hotel was where the afternoon tea service for business started !! I didn't have it ,but my sister & our aunt did it !! My personal favourites are Piperheidd Siek pink champagne !!! Which Marlyn Monroe loved ,too !! I love Veuve Cilquot , Laurent Perrier , Perrier Jouet champagnes 🍾 ♥ Though I hardly drink !! Lol. Once a year .Thanks for this video ! I am currently planning our trip to Wales and England. 👍💜🥁🐉🎤💕💞
Thanks for the information on afternoon tea. However, I liked your story about Tavistock. My father's mother's family comes from the area and I've been to the church there. It brought back some wonderful memories.
Love this video.I am from Hongkong to Uk for 3 months .I am trying to have English tea. Thank you for everything about this video.Hope you are all good.
You should've hit up Jarrolds in Norwich - best scones ever. Fruit or cheese, and considerably cheaper. Of course, by the time you add in the train fare, probably in line with the cheaper of your options. By the way, Brit living in Texas and I make my own scones (which are pretty popular here with friends, I can confirm). Hope you enjoyed your trip to London.
I live in London but still loved watching this review and video Thanks for the history also good to know Curious as to why you didn't choose to have afternoon tea at the Ritz Claridges or the Savoy or even Fortnum and Mason's as they are so iconic
@@lindalaw5466 Book for just after the official time for the second sitting finishes. So around sixish . You'll be served your full afternoon tea. It's lovely and quiet. One's gotta love it that Selfridge's was founded by an American. I may be a Texan, but attended University at Oxford - and am a total anglophile. Through the Churchill Spencer line, William and Harry are my 9th cousins twice-removed. That being said, I have found some really nice pub teas for around £14.00. Unless it were an adventure: seeking atmosphere and close attention at table, I would never pay more than £25 for tea. You have a very lovely family - and I enjoyed this presentation very much! 👨👩👧👧
My daughter and I wen't to claridges for afternoon tea a few years ago and it was beautiful staff were brilliant we even got a small tin of loose tea (which I haven't opened) and we were given a bag to fill with sweets on the way out..
WOW, this brought back so many memories when we spent six months in Woking! The Afternoon Tea(full experience) should be on visitors "To-Do" list in the UK! Thanks for sharing.
As an American, I absolutely love the English tradition of tea in the afternoon. Those deserts look amazing, especially the raisan scones! I'm definitely a Devon vs Cornwall.
Thank you for posting the video and I love all the historical facts. We are planning a trip right now and I definitely want my kiddos to experience tea.
As you mentioned in the video, in the original version of the cream tea at Tavistock Abbey the cream was served on bread. Scones are a relatively modern introduction and originate from Scotland. In the past, in Devon, the cream and jam would have been served on small, round, light white bread rolls known variously as splits, toughs or chudleighs. Staying with farming relatives as a child I was occasionally given bread and cream topped with a drizzle of golden syrup for breakfast. This combination was known as "thunder and lightening". In Cornwall, saffron cake, a delicious (and expensive on account of the saffron) fruited yeast cake baked in a loaf tin, is sometimes eaten topped with clotted cream instead of butter.
This is such a helpful subject. I'm hoping to make something like this memorial during a mother-son trip this year. I think she would enjoy Dolly's more, but Four Seasons is outstanding.
Great video, great family, I think I’d prefer the cheaper cream tea, less fussy……get over to Dublin, we have afternoon tea on a vintage bus that travels around the city, it’s a hoot……best wishes from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
You should try marks and Spencer’s cafe which do a really good budget cream tea which will be probably be around £20 for all of you depending on the elements u choose. You can get mini sandwiches too.
For me, a cream tea would be a nice treat, but, as London prices are a rip-off (I know, that's only my opinion), I wouldn't even dream of spending nearly £40 on a cream tea (let alone £400+ for an afternoon tea!) for two adults and two children. I would be too busy leaving the building, whilst echoing my Yorkshire's friend's frequent comment of, "How much?! You're joking me, love!" 😉
When Living in London with husband we went for afternoon tea at Dorchester Hotel it was lovely but I can’t remember how much it cost it was over 30 yrs ago. I put jam first on my scone.
Hi. Nice video. Which museum was it was where the tea was 9,- € ? I haven't been to London for a really long time. Bu t when I return I woul like to have a tea ceremony with my husband.
I really like afternoon tea at the Langham Hotel, they are wondrously sumptuous affairs with an extensive tea menu, bespoke sandwiches and a beautiful atmosphere. Expect to pay handsomely for the experience but you won’t leave hungry or disappointed
I know this might have been explained before, but how did you manage to travel so extensively in 2021 while a pandemic was going on? Or did you just pick places where quarantine wasn’t necessary and Covid rules were much less strict? I travelled from Zürich to Bangkok and Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur last year and that was already stressful enough!!
For the experience I would go with the more expensive one. Only because I think if you can swing it money wise. It looks like a very nice appetizing way to spend the afternoon. Just chatting with your friends or family and having so real quality time together.
Don't know how I came across this channel, but surely an exciting watch. What a lucky family , and more lucky is the cutest girls. Having them being exposed to various cultures around World and at early age, is quiet something. Good luck with your upcoming cities tour and surely will be watching some of your videos.
Thank you for the heads-up about the venue for Selfridge's Tea Room being near the Perfume counter. That would be a NO for me, as I have a very sensitive nose! I hope your girls give you extra hugs and gratitude for giving them the best education through travel. You are to be commended for taking them everywhere. Good parents❤️
That sounds non-ideal to me, too, but I noticed there appears to be a large dining area. Perhaps a seat farther from the perfume area for me since it looks so bright and nice in there!

I definitely would do the Four Seasons option. Living vicariously through your videos. Thanks for taking us along.😎
I’ve always wanted to do afternoon tea in London! Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your family!
Traditionally afternoon tea is either at the Ritz or Fortnum & Mason.
@@rosalindasculturalcabana8581 I’m sure those are great, but I would love to try Claridge’s, or Selfridge’s, too.
I agree
They always try to push the champagne on you. Mark-up price for champagne per glass is where they make the most money.
Can I know where is this bakery please?
£121, You can get to Devon & buy a tea for that. You might even get glamping or youth hostel accommodation too. Depending on your travel costs.
Self ridges lol
You could get Devon scones and clotted cream delivered for 1/3 of that price 😅
I love taking afternoon teas wherever I go, especially in Britain and my dream is to have it at the Ritz. I also love to host teas at home. Looks like you all enjoyed your afternoon experience.
Costs about £70. May need to book ahead. Very strict dress code must be adhered to. If you make it...ENJOY!
You definitely need to book, well in advance. Even staying in the hotel doesn’t mean you can get in ! But it is lovely!
The Grosvenor, Hyde Park, offers an wonderful Afternoon Tea experience also.
BTW scones are so easy to make! I use the recipe for Lemonade scones. They also freeze well but are best eaten just out of the oven.
I’m glad you enjoyed London teas. I’m British and think one of our best traditions is the afternoon tea. Informative video and I really like the ladies voices it’s so clear and each word is well pronounced. Love to see more of your videos. So long!
Aww what a fun trip and such cute kiddos! Thanks for sharing, I am living vicariously through you! 😂
OMG, you have explained both Devon and Cornwal cream tea! For a posh afternoon tea, the Savoy is great.
If you don't eat all the cakes, does the restaurant pack them for you to take away or do they throw them away?
How cool! in April of 2011 my 16 year old granddaughter and I took cream tea across from Harrad's and though inexpensive we both loved it!
Yes!!🌟🌟🌹🌻🎼👧🏻❤💖Just great Experiences,And inesqueciblle Moments.🌟🌟❤💙👑👌
It was pleasant to listen to you. Sweet voice. Beautiful family. I love Sconessssss
Very pricey(£95), but worth it!😍
Wow how lovely, of course your worth it , and you only look 35 .
Not worth it for tea and biscuits with butter & jam, a few cookies, and a couple of tiny sandwiches.
Throughout my life I have spent some memorable afternoons having tea or coffee with friends and loved ones. You all looked as though you were enjoying your experience. Pleasing video, thank you for sharing...
Thank you for sharing your experiences on London. You have a delightful family. 👍😊
Thanks for the tour...you and your family are charmers. Good presentations, pleasant people, positive and helpful comments...well done.
I think i would steal the tea pot and plates----PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m about 40 miles from London and we have a nice little cafe that does a lovely afternoon tea for £10. I’m not sure I’d pay London prices 🤔 I think I’d cry! 😂
Hope you enjoyed your time here.
If you're willing to share, I'd love to hear the name of your local place!
@@bellaluce7088 priory house tea room in Bedfordshire. Tbh, it was before lockdown, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the prices have gone up since then. Came out of there stuffed! 😂
@@titchs9098 Thanks so much for answering! I looked it up, and it looks lovely! Hopefully I will get to visit someday! ❤🫖❤
@@bellaluce7088 I hope you enjoy as much as we did! 🙂
@@titchs9098 Thank you! : - )
I love 💓that your girls are loving it as much as Mom and Dad! Building great memories!! My girls always remember the 1st time I took them, dressed up , white gloves, went for proper tea. Then all their friends wanted to come!
Both sound wonderful! I would probably pick out the scones for everyday and the more elaborate tea for special occasions.
Of all the places I’ve been, I’ve never been to London. Loving the different aspects of the city you’re showing
I always love your videos. Keep them coming!!!
Thank you so much!
Your kids are so lucky. They travel more in 1 year, than I have in my entire 62 years of life.
Try the Ritz, it’s an experience like no other! Unfortunately they give you a time slot of 90 minutes only, but the rest is divine.
Love your videos 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I lived in England for 10 years, now back in India but I have to have my afternoon tea with scones…but if you really want to enjoy English tea you must visit Cotswold villages where they have these small boutique tea shops
Oh wow that sounds lovely! Thanks for the tip!
@@TopFlightFamily
I'm Irish. Over here we pronounce the word "scone" the same way you do.
Scones are so good with raisins. I’ll be back in London in a few days
I enjoy watching your videos & the history you give. I look forward to more videos👏🏼👍🏼
Very educational... I'm glad I stumbled onto this video. I really enjoyed this video and your family!
Don Perignon is very very expensive off course !! I am jealous !! Lol. Their pink champagne 🍾 was $ 2,000 / bottle at Ritz Carlton here in Cali.back in the 90's !!!
It brought back some wonderful memories.
your kids are so well behaved and lady like. They will grow up and live luxury life like her mom showed them..
We not need to be exactly in London for afternoon tea in Windsor you can have 5 stars afternoon tea it's very nice xx
@Briael, thank you for the info. I visit Norwich and never realized that Jarrold's had great scones. Definitely on my list for my next visit. Cheers.
This is making me miss London and afternoon tea at Harrod's.
My son had his wedding at the 4 Seasons it was absolutely gorgeous stunning and we were treated like Royalty
This video was so cute im wondering what kind of sandwiches those were?
Nice you found out about the order of the jam and clotted cream 😂🙏 jam first is always the best way
I live in London but still loved watching this review and video
Thanks for the history also good to know
Curious as to why you didn't choose to have afternoon tea at the Ritz Claridges or the Savoy or even Fortnum and Mason's as they are so iconic
Perhaps they needed reservations. I will say they got an excellent table near the window.
I went to the Ritz for afternoon tea probably 10 years ago. We had to book 3 months in advance. Even staying at the hotel doesn’t mean you’ll get in!
@@lindalaw5466 I went about 30 years ago and it was disappointing. I've heard that Brown's is the best place for tea.
@@lindalaw5466 Book for just after the official time for the second sitting finishes. So around sixish . You'll be served your full afternoon tea. It's lovely and quiet. Mostly people having a few nibbles and drinks in the Palm court with you . Although some will be having tea just as you are. 😊 The hotel manager gave us that tip. It was lots of fun, service impeccable as always.
@@sandie157 Thanks for the tip 🙂
I think I would love to experience the afternoon tea at the Four Seasons at least once. Thanks for sharing this!
Better to go to the Ritz or Fortnum and Mason if you want to follow the traditional route.
WOW, this brought back so many memories when we spent six months in Woking! The Afternoon Tea(full experience) should be on visitors "To-Do" list in the UK! Thanks for sharing.
In Woking? Wow I live in Ascot ,and I always go to Woking shopping xx
As an American, I absolutely love the English tradition of tea in the afternoon. Those deserts look amazing, especially the raisan scones! I'm definitely a Devon vs Cornwall.
Good for you. I live in Devon where cream tea is ubiquitous. There is cream first and jam and top and heresy :)
In Cornwall, saffron cake, a delicious
(and expensive on account of the saffron) fruited yeast cake baked in a loaf tin, is sometimes eaten topped with clotted cream instead of butter.
This is such a helpful subject. I'm hoping to make something like this memorial during a mother-son trip this year. I think she would enjoy Dolly's more, but Four Seasons is outstanding.
You are a good son! I would love the Four Seasons as well but with our budget it would probably be Selfridges. 🤑
Quite right.
Cutest little girls ever! Plus they thoroughly enjoyed their teas!
When Living in London with husband we went for afternoon tea at Dorchester Hotel it was lovely
but I can’t remember how much it cost it was over 30 yrs ago. I put jam first on my scone.
Will be staying at Shangri-La London in March and plan to have the afternoon tea at Ting restaurant. Looking forward to it. Lovely video again.
The Shard is an amazing experience. The pool overlooking the city on the 42nd floor is the best way to recover from jet lag,
Great video. I should have eat breakfast before watching this video. Now I am starving! lol
😅😅 sorry! Thanks for watching!
Wooo so look very nice family ❤️❤️
Thanks for great sharing greattng from MACAU
What a great video, thank you! And your girls are adorable! Subscribed! 🤣
What fun to share your lovely English afternoon tea. From a Calilfornia native who doesn't like to leave home. You are all cool. Thanks.
Ahhh scones! Living though your trip right now. We tried Fortnum and Mason (❤️) and Sketch (😖) last time in London. Adding Four Seasons to the list.
You didn't like Sketch? 😮
@@bbmcgee33 I loved its atmosphere! The decor is unique and picture perfect. 😍 But imo the food and service are decent at best.
these two girls tasting the fancy pastries just made my day!
Hi. Nice video. Which museum was it was where the tea was 9,- € ? I haven't been to London for a really long time.
Bu t when I return I woul like to have a tea ceremony with my husband.
Thanks for filming!
I really like afternoon tea at the Langham Hotel, they are wondrously sumptuous affairs with an extensive tea menu, bespoke sandwiches and a beautiful atmosphere. Expect to pay handsomely for the experience but you won’t leave hungry or disappointed
The Langam is one of my favourites too. I also liked Claridges.
Loved seeing this. Your girls are precious. I'll remember Selfridges.
I love fluffy scones paired with tea so I am perfectly happy with just that. :)
I know this might have been explained before, but how did you manage to travel so extensively in 2021 while a pandemic was going on? Or did you just pick places where quarantine wasn’t necessary and Covid rules were much less strict? I travelled from Zürich to Bangkok and Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur last year and that was already stressful enough!!
my comment was similar too
almost 1,000.00 for afternoon tea and it was all worth it!! Amazing Video!! Splendid mwah!!
