Sonny Burgess did play with a clean sound, I believe he always played and wasn't someone who gave up for 30 years or so, his guitar sound would have developed over years of playing in the manner of other artists such as Albert Lee, I'm not a fan of the super smooth Fender sound but it was a tool for most of the architects of rock n roll so it can't be all bad😊

the lead guitar riffs sound far too processed and country to be proper rustic rockabilly here.
