Sooner Magic!

  • The term "Sooner Magic" was born on a cold and windy afternoon in Lincoln, Neb., in 1976 when the Sooners were trailing the Cornhuskers 17-13 with three minutes to play.
Oklahoma had the ball at their own 16-yard line when Woodie Shepard completed a 48-yard halfback pass to freshman end Steve Rhodes, whose catch was nothing short of miraculous. It was the first pass OU had attempted in the game. Three plays later on 3rd down and 20, coach Barry Switzer sent backup quarterback Dean Blevins into the game. It was Dean's first and last play of the game. He passed to Rhodes who then pitched to Elvis Peacock on the old hook-and-lateral play. Peacock was finally knocked out of bounds at the Nebraska two after gaining 38 yards. With 38 seconds remaining in the game the Sooners scored on the next play and went on to win 20 to 17.

I have recalled that game, especially that last drive as clearly as the recent last drive against Texas this season. And it fully deserves to be the best of examples of... "Sooner Magic".

3:50 left in the game and Oklahoma throws its first pass. Ahhh, the good old days when we just lined up and said "Here comes the wishbone, try and stop it if you can."

Former Texas coach Darrell Royal used to say there were 3 things that could happen when you threw the football…….and 2 of them were bad.

As a lifelong Nebraska fan in my mid-50s, you must know that I saw the thumbnail and the title of this video, and I refuse to watch any of it.

@@timothyleon558 it’s been a few years since they won a conference championship. The SEC won’t be kind. I hope OU and its fans like going to the bowl in Shreveport.
