1997 NLCS Game 5: Chipper Jones vs Eric Gregg’s Strike Zone (1st Inning)

  • WARNING: If you are here and post the LIE that is nothing but a pansy "Maddux and Glavine got those calls for years"......get lost. Your comment WILL be deleted, and you will be blocked from channel UNLESS you can give me VIDEO EVIDENCE of a full game where Greg Maddux and/or Tom Glavine got 45 STRIKES' worth in the BATTERS BOX calls. We're not talking "worked the plate and yes, got a ball called a strike by the ump." We are talking about pitches the opponent couldn't even reach had he been standing right over the plate. Those two guys faced over 38,000 batters - so it shouldn't be hard for you to provide VIDEO evidence to prove it. This game was a disgrace, and Eric Gregg should have been fired on the spot for it. Is that why Florida won the LCS? No. But don't pretend Livan Hernandez didn't get two zip codes as a strike zone, either.

The Braves were never the same after this series loss. I know Eric Gregg never umpired another playoff game and they declined to rehire him after the labor dispute but too little, too late. They just suspended a college umpire for 1 bad call that was really not much worse than the calls here.

The only time I saw anything like it was in the Memphis airport (morning newspaper), day after '02 Miami - Ohio St NCAAF natl championship game where a Big 12 ref named Terry Porter (not the ref on the immediate scene) threw a flag three seconds after play (and game) was over. Miami won the game and Porter stepped in and took it away.
Research late revealed Porter had been written up in Big 12 that year by conference front office for deciding a game with an errant and unnecessary call. Nonetheless, this bozo shows on crew working most important game of the season.
The next year, Big 12 relegated him to the booth, then retirement. Too late. As here, the damage was done. Like the Braves here, the great Miami dynasty was over and they never recovered. That would've been back to back natties. Coach Larry Coker went 6-6 two seasons later and was unceremoniously fired. Should've been back to back natties. Pays to be a Buckeye.

Eric Gregg will forever be remembered as a dishonest, embarrassment. To me, the most horrible part of this is that he had to have a reason. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come up with the reason. He obviously has a "vested" interest in the outcome of the game. To have your life's work on display like this and to forever have a recording of your dishonesty has to be hard for his family to take. This isn't one bad call at a big moment. This is an hours long event where a man who clearly has money on the line is cheating on live TV and could care less. Literally witnessing a crime watching this.
