    I worked in most of these hoods as a hospice nurse. I loved my patients and their families. They would watch out for you. I did start farthest out from my neighborhood and work my way back in so I'd be home before in got too dark. Especially in the winter time.

    I lived in Memphis in the early to mid 90's and LOVED it. It breaks my HEART to see what it's become especially my old neighborhood which I'm told is now called Hickory HOOD (!). Memphis was the GREATEST city ever back then. A common debate was whether Memphis or Atlanta would become a bigger and better city ... Memphis coulda been bigger and better than what Atlanta is now. Breaks my heart.

    The area you called "Blackhaven" is actually named "Whitehaven". I lived there from 1960 until 1987, then I moved to the Mendenhall/ Winchester area in 1988. In the 1960s to about 1975, these areas were about 95% white. Then they built rather large Section 8 housing projects in these areas, and the exodus was underway. There are far more areas this mostly on the south and southeast side, but others on the north side such as north Memphis, Frayser, and Raleigh. Edit. Foot homes have been demolished for years.

    I left Memphis because I could not find work in my field. I do miss the personality of the city. The people there are str8 up and not phony and fake like Nashville. Honestly Nashville is not for black people, and they got their ways of keeping it that way. I wanna come back, but I just cannot go back to struggling again. I miss it though.

    I was born and raised in Memphis. We lived close to Summer and White Station while I was in elementary school. About the 7th grade we moved to the outskirts of Raliegh, off Eqypt Central between New Allen and Raliegh-Millington Rd, back when it was still in the county. Over the years I saw the rapid decline of the city and knew it was time to head to better area. I ended up in western Michigan, but I still miss the history, culture and food of Memphis.

    My parents both were born and raised in this city. Mom in North Memphis (New Chicago) and pops in Claiborne Homes. I was born in Memphis too but they saw what Memphis was becoming in the early 80s so we headed out west to Cali for a better life and it was the best decision they ever made. I often wonder how I would of turned out if I would of grew up out there instead of a way calmer city like Sac. Memphis is still my 2nd home and I rep it all the time.

      Did they REALLY change the name from "Whitehaven"? It has been predominately black since the early 1980s. The entire south side from South Parkway to the state line was 90% or more white before the late 1970s and most of it was not part of the city.

      @@swinde it was called white flight....when one black family would move in to an all white neighborhood..it would just be a matter of time...maybe even days before it would become predominantly and eventually all black....Southland Mall was not built for us...we had Southgate Shopping Center

    • @swinde
      @swinde 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grew up in rural Shelby county in the south east corner. Whitehaven is in south of the county farther west.
      the entire area was "white" except for a few enclaves of balk people that owned land from the sharecropper days. Ironically the area was near a short street named Whitehaven Lane near the County high school.
      I graduated there in 1964. Racial integration began with the 1965 school year. This school had 1200 students, and they admitted three black students to the school. (Two girls and one boy). I think they were all in the freshman class.
      In the early 1970 the federal government required new public housing to be located in areas that were not already in minority neighborhoods. The core of the city was already occupied by minorities.
      The main political power was in the east side, so they built three projects in the Whitehaven area, one near Parkway Village near Getwell/ Winchester, and several more in the Frayser area, bur nothing on the east side.
      Carlton Knox: When I was a teenager even the Shopping center and surrounding area was predominately white. Minorities tended to be north of South Parkway.
      When the projects are built Whites and even near middle class black people relocate.
