Silom is considered to be CBD (central business district) of Bangkok due to many office buildings in the area for at least 2 decades. As there are many offices, there are thousands of office workers who need to at least eat lunch. Some also eat breakfast and dinner as well. They have 2 options: Office canteen or street food stalls, which are aplenty to cater to all tastes of office workers.

I used to work in Silom, and lived nearby not far from the Thai Airways office. I can see the appeal. It's greener, has wider tree-lined streets, has ample public transport, but with that comes the higher costs of everything and having to put up with crowds, especially from October through March. I hardly ever go out there now unless I have business to do out there.

I’m Thai and I’d say Siam area. Riverside is good also but not as many accomodation options + slighter further away.

Silom is too modern. I rather stay in places with rich history like DT BK

I disagree. There's nothing particularly nice about Silom. Plus it's expensive compared to other areas

are you talking about visit stay or live stay as surely the biggest concentration of farang in Thailand must be the dreadful Kao San rd block had a friend living in a paid appartment in Bkk most depressing 3 rooms I ever saw (only 5 yrs old too)

    I disagree...
I think the best place to stay in Bangkok is near the river.
You can't do better than the Oriental Hotel, but if the price is beyond your means, there is always the Royal Orchid Sheraton which js more affordable and is also located right on the river.
You can take the river taxis to Wat Arun and the Grand Palace.
Taxis and tuk-tuks are readily available and are inexpensive.
It's all a matter of taste, of course, but I personally love staying by the river.
Whatever you choose, Bangkok is a great destination for tourists.
Just be aware that it is HOT (I mean HOT!) all the time!!!

I have lived in California pretty much all my life, and I don't know if I had ever been bitten by a mosquito.
I heard in Thailand you are very likely to be bitten by them. Why do they have mosquitoes there? Is it because it's a tropical country?
