    Okay so I'm not a tattoo artist but I am a regular artist and for the girl who was quoted $500 and had to go back another day, I'll say this: If a client and I have agreed on a price, that's the price! Even if it takes me longer than I thought it would, that's on me for not taking my own skill/speed into account or managing my time properly. Yes, it's an inconvenience to me, but it's also an inconvenience to them, and it's one I caused. They shouldn't be punished for my mistakes.

      But its not as set and the length of the tattoo can be dependent on how much the individuals skin can take, some can handle more than others and some skin is easier to work with. With that being said tattoo artist can give approximates so they shouldn't have to pay for the art per say but maybe considered tipping for the material cost. Also its never usually a set cost, someone can only estimate so accurately especially since this person knew they were going to an apprentice i.e. someone still progressing. But the artist should have known to give themselves a bit of wiggle room. idk I feel like since we only hear their side it's not something I want jump to assume they are in the right.

      As a freelancer (writing and digital art) this is how I do it as well. I've definitely done work for far less than it was worth before, but it was a learning experience for me to better plan for the time and work that will go into a given project.
      Also, if something comes up that is definitely not my fault, I make sure to clearly communicate why I might need to charge more and it sounds like this artist did not do that.

      This!! I’d say it’s way better giving an estimate instead of a set price. My tattoo artist said my tattoo would be a maximum of $500 and the price ended up being $450, I was well prepared to have it be on the higher end and the price ended up being fair to both of us.

      Well I am a tattoo artist, and yes the skin and how the person takes ink affects how long and how difficult it will be for a tattooist, that is something we have no control over and can't know ahead.
      But if I tell my client that there tattoo will be 500, it's gonna be 500, I don't care if I have to tattoo them 1 day, 3 days, 5 days or even 10 days that tattoo will still be 500.
      For that reason, and especially if I don't have in person consultation I will tell them that the price will probably be 500 but can wary from 400-600 depending on the size and how the tattooing goes.

      Yes. This was a learning experience for the apprentice. I’m a hairstylist not a tattoer but there’s a lot of crossover business-wise. When you are new, setting prices can be a challenge. I used to under estimate my timing all the time! That’s not the client’s responsibility. It sounds like this guy has a lot to learn about customer service, professionalism, and pricing appropriately. Hopefully his mentor checks his attitude.

    About the girl that was quoted the 500$: The thing is she wasn't sure if this was the normal thing, paying extra because the tattoo takes longer. So, she did the exact right thing, she asked the shop (the shop owner I guess), the one person other than her artist that should know everything about their pricing. And they said no, you don't need to pay. So she didn't. I would have done the same. I'm sorry, if you and your boss aren't on the same page about your pricing go find another shop, or sit together and talk about it, but don't fight it out on the clients back.

    For the $500 tattoo one, if I were the artist I would've said "hey, this is going to take me a little longer than I thought and you'll have to come back for a second session. I quoted you the $500 for the whole piece, so today it'll just be $400 and then pay the remainder at the next session". If the artist had communicated their quote was hourly based, he should've given a range and made it clear like "I estimate this to take x number of hours but I charge per hour so it could go up to z number of hours too". If the quote was based on the piece of lion, cub, and flowers, it should stay $500 and that's a whoopsie on the artist part for not estimating and quoting properly. I wouldn't change a quote because I didn't realize I was biting off more than I could chew

    With the lady quoted $500 and then asked to pay more, I absolutely think it should be the set price. Otherwise it could easily be manipulative. If she’s part way through the tattoo and then suddenly gets told it will be more, the tattoo is partially finished and you’re being pressured into paying more. Its a slippery slope if you start adding more once the tattoo is already started!

      Exactly this - I’m about to get a rib piece done by an apprentice.
      She thinks it’ll only take 4 hours (~£175 for her); but she also provided me with cost info for hourly rates/what a full day would cost should we overrun for any reason.
      I’ve been quoted about £175, however it’s not a final agreed price because we had that discussion about how long it may take. She doesn’t include any breaks I need to take etc in the price, which is also lovely. She’s not taking any more clients that day just in case

I love KY, gorgeous countryside, but a lot of the ppl & mindsets there are tragic. 😭 I felt her story so hard & she's spitting absolute facts ☹️ Feels like we're going backwards. Fk, depressing!
      In Eastern Kentucky, we're basically ground zero for the 0piate epidemic. I've lost 8 friends to OD since 2014. There's def more that have died, but I stopped counting for my mental health.
      It's a battle for whether you stay to combat the mindsets, or leave to save your own life. Had I stayed, I'd legit either be dead or in jail, from addiction. God... I hope her & anyone who's able to leave, does if they want to. If they're lucky enough to.
      God that's heavy, sorry. I don't even have tattoos yet, I've decided on one. It's going to be the hammer & sickle, prob with roses(socialism). I just realized that esp if I got it in KY, that some may deny even doing it bc they're ignorant politically.
      Luckily I'm settling in India & it's not as taboo here ✊ I'll prob get it here then, now that I think about it, lol.

      Certain parts of Ohio are getting better, but overall it’s a bright red conservative state. It’s self sabotaging too, because all those farmers/ industry workers are supporting republicans who are funded by the big lobbyists - lobbyists who’d wipe out those farms or close factories in an instant if they stood in the way of making money. As far as the tattoo community goes, it is still on the fringe of “normal” to all the conservatives so I have no idea why those artists feel they can judge anyone - let alone people in their own profession.

He couldn't finish it in one sitting and wait until after my second session, to then tell me that I owed him another $500 and it was in fact $500 for a day. My understanding is that a quote is an estimation of what it might cost, not a final price. My opinion changes depending on if the shop decided that she would be paying a flat rate or an hourly rate for the piece. If it's a flat rate, then the artist should have understood that is how much the piece costed, period. If they were working based on hourly rate, she should have paid the extra.

      That's what I was thinking too. I have tested all of the options basically. Got my first Tattoo with an estimate price. The second one I paid for hourly (100€ p/hr) and since it took 1h longer than expected, I had to pay the 100€ more. But we did talk about that before and she gave me an estimate time with an hour give or take, so I was prepared for it. And the third I then paid for the whole day, so we could take as much time as we needed. Took 7h + 2h touchup a few months later and it was all covered by the flat rate.

    • @DomDaBom
      @DomDaBom ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed but also, his attitude and the way he made her uncomfortable I wouldn't have given him a tip or the 150 he was demanding and unprofessionally talking about. There's a way you have to talk to clients about price and that ain't it

    • @MayCleaver
      @MayCleaver ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Personally, I do my best to give as close a quote on time as possible, for example 1.5-2 hrs at whatever the hourly rate for the piece is (my rate for custom & already drawn is different) I will also do flat rate pieces for select designs but only on arms or legs as other parts of the body can be more difficult to tattoo & take longer. My estimate for flat rate stuff falls between the longest & sortest amount of time I estimate the tattoo will take & don’t forget to add tax.
      A big piece like the lion in the video, I’d charge an hourly custom rate & give a bit more room on either side of my hourly quote. For example 4-6 hours, so the client is prepared to pay the max amount, or in some cases, pleased that it took less time than the max quoted! If I go over what I quoted, I will usually eat the extra or charge very little extra if the client is in the financial position to do so.
      Side note: I’m 10 years in & I’d say it took me almost half that time to learn the speed at which I’m capable of executing a tattoo & feel confident in my quotes. This will, of course differ from artist to artist ❤

      Okay roses yes, super common (peony roses are particularly popular atm).. But butterflies, quotes, lions? Those are generally just kinda old fashioned but not insanely common among younger people.
      But this stereotype works 2 ways, if we're gonna apply this back to men it'd be; A compass or watch tattoo, a dagger or sword, or again.. a lion.
      It's dumb to generalize, these are common tattoo themes but they don't really say much about someone's personality, whether someone got a tattoo on a whim or went for cheap over quality.. That DOES say something and is a reason to stay away.

      explain that no real people were harmed in the making of this movie and ultimately it’s entertainment. the victims where all paid actors. ultimately fictional horror is the most ethical way to engage in these topics especially as true crime has gotten more popular and exploitative.
      while someone can be similarly disturbed by a fictional killer as a real one, they are not the same.

    The thing that genuinely makes me wonder, after noticing a bit of a pattern through these videos, is that do people honestly not check what the stencil/freehand looks like on their bodies before starting the actual tattooing? Because in so many of these "I didn't get what i wanted" stories the tattoo artist wants to make it a bit bigger for the tattoo to be more legible/age better etc. and the end result is huge and nothing like what the customer wanted. Like not seeing the shading etc I can understand, because there are areas of your body you won't be able to see during the tattooing, but the picture itself, do people not look at the actual designs and sizing before giving the tattoo artist permission to start, or how do so many people end up with tattoos 5-10x the size from what they actually wanted.

    • @emilybetty5386
      @emilybetty5386 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I think some people just really need to learn to speak up for themselves. Like it's going to be on you forever, if you don't like the design and the artist is not willing to change it then you shouldn't just get the tattoo anyway. if there's a million red flags with the artist you shouldn't get the tattoo. tbh at 18 I probably also would've been a pushover and scared to say something so I'm glad I waited until I was a little bit older and more confident to start getting tattoos. To some extent I get what people are saying about "they're the artist I trust them" and I definitely do trust the artists whose work I really like or who I've been to before, but also if you don't like a stencil you're probably not going to like the tattoo!!!

    When i was a fresh tattooartist/ apprentice, i was very bad at estimating how much time and effort a tattoo would take. I made an entire leg (from ankle to bit over knee) for 300€ and because i was so slow, it took me 7 or 8 sessions. It was also highly detailed, dotwork, blackwork, schading, lines. I didnt have enough guidance and for a long time, it happened pretty often i would take wayy to low of a price. Then, for those clients, i got even more insecure to tell them the next price, because they were used to that extreme low one. I now am a pretty good tattoo artist and have learned a lot, i still lean on the lower price end for the quality of work that i do, but im fine with that. I learned pretty quickly, so the sleeve turned out well, considering i was an apprentice, so the guy got lucky. He said i was way to cheap for the work i did, but didnt offer to pay me more. What im getting at is, apprentices lead to undervaluing themselves i think.

    I’ve had two tattoos that I tapped out and had a second session. Yes it cost extra both times as a day session is often a discounted price to get it done in the day. A second appointment is more set up and cleaning, more time that could be another appointment, more ink and equipment used which is why it’s charged on top of what was already paid. If it’s not done in the day rest was charged a per hour rate over. Plus I was advised it would take longer in the second day that it would in the same day as they have to be careful not to go over healed areas or discolour the linework. All agreed upon before leaving the first session.

    I had a similar situation where I was quoted 500 dollars for something (and on top of that- it was to match my other leg with a similar design by her that I DID pay 500 for) but she didn't finish. She asked for 700 at the end despite not finishing. I mentioned that we agreed on 500, and the last tattoo was 500, and 700 wasn't in my budget. I had gotten 600 out of the ATM (money I was planning on tipping with) so we settled on 600. However since she didn't finish and I had to come back, the shop minimum was 100 so I paid another 100 to come back another day to have it finished, so 700 total. I love her work, but I did feel kind of jipped since one side cost 500. Still paid it though

    The 'owed' tattoo money would totally depend on the fine print of the shop. I know some do a one and done price and other specifically charge by the hour/time. If it wasn't specified that if the tattoo took longer then estimated there could be an extra charge then Id say the lady was in the right.
    I know I would be pissed if someone tried to charge me what is esentially a 'hidden fee' that wasn't mentioned anywhere prior.

    I've had the situation with having an appointment in which my tattoo wasn't done and I had to go back to get it finished. I think it depends on your experience, because my artist was so nice to me and very caring, I didn't mind paying more. She also apologised multiple times but to be honest, I get art in return that's on my body forever with an amazing experience attached to it. If I had refused to pay, the tattoo wouldn't have turned out that great because it would've spoiled the experience. Nothing worse than working on something without getting payed I imagine. But in the case of the tik tok, the fact that they were being quite rude, it would've made me salty and annoyed as well, I would not pay more than the quote they gave me in advance. I mean, most artists don't give an exact price tag because it depends on the situation and client's skin etc, but he made the mistake of putting a price on the art so he should not get mad if she only pays that amount.

    I think it depends on how the shop handles quotes. For some it's an estimate for some it's THE price. Best to clarify, however, IMO, it's up to the shop to make that designation and not leave up to the client to assume. It does seem like it's a quote not an estimate in the shop's eyes so the the client is off the hook and the artist should be pissed at the owner not the client.

    On the $500 tattoo, I would have likely tipped $150. And not tipped any more. But I also understand how she felt like he was rude and the shop was awkward. So I get her not tipping.
    But I think any tattoo that size should probably be quoted as a price per hour. Then give an idea of how long the artist thinks it will take with a clear indication that it may take longer than that. That situation could have been avoided with a per hour price.

  • @gwynpeters6029
    @gwynpeters6029 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    With the $500 quote - I think I would be fine paying extra, but that’s because I generally understand quotes to be an approximate. My last artist gave me a range instead of an exact quote, and it ended up being in the middle of that range. I think that system works great because it can be hard to know exactly how long something will take. But she asked the shop, and they said the quote should be the price, so if that’s how it works at that specific shop her artist had no right to be rude about it. As a client that must’ve been so awful getting tattooed by someone who is pissed at you, I wouldn’t go back there ever.

    I think where she went wrong was not saying anything when he first told her about the extra time and 150. I think if she had spoken up they could've even found a middle ground and maybe done another 100 or something. It was worth a conversation. The $500 was supposed to cover the entire tattoo. She didn't ask for anything extra; the artist didn't book enough time, so it shouldn't really fall on her to pay more because he didn't anticipate enough time. One could argue that she also needed to use her gas and time coming back for another appointment when she was expecting the single visit. But since she walked away having agreed to pay the 150, I think for that reason she should have paid it. The shop's voice shouldn't be louder than the artist's when he didn't do anything wrong. I don't think his sour attitude was appropriate either, but I do think she was in the wrong for not speaking up right when he told her.

    • @Kunstenaarus
      @Kunstenaarus ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don’t believe she agreed to pay the $150. She didn’t say anything because she was confused and didn’t want confrontation. She messaged the shop to clarify. It definitely would’ve been easier to have spoken up in the moment but I also understand where she’s coming from. It can be extremely intimidating to speak up for yourself in a situation like that.

    I think the problem with the tattoo apprentice is that they are still learning how much time it might take for their tattoos. Maybe he quoted based on the fact he thought it would take five hours and then realizes at that point he needs more time. He should have given an approximate quote……$500-$600 depending on the length of time. It happens a lot in house renovations. Someone quotes you on a job they think will take a day and then the job is not finished in a day. I think if it’s an exact quote they have to absorb the loss. I think with time he will realize maybe to quote a little more based on a time factor. She was very quick to jump at booking the tattoo when she heard the $500 quote. She knew it was a good deal so personally I would have met him halfway at least.

    As someone who does art commissions, I give a quote before I start work and if I end up working longer on the piece than I had anticipated, I personally do not ask for more money. With pieces that are larger or more complex or im not sure how long they'll take, I can set a price range so the client at least knows about what to expect and then quote them when it's finished. But once there has been a set price agreed upon, I dont change that because it's not fair to the client who thought they knew what they were agreeing to
