Havoc is a good beat maker but trust me I know a lot of producers that can make beats like his. He samples a little loop and throws a basic drum sample over it. If you think about it, there's nothing really special about what he's doing. What always made his beats good to me is his sample selection. Now when you get producers like RZA, DJ Premie and Muggs, they use totally different techniques that are much more complicated and can't be duplicated by just anyone. Their beat scientists. With that being said Mobb Deep's first album is definitely on my top 15 greatest hip hop album.

Let's put it like this...your favorite rapper got a ton of P lyrics memorized since 95 and your favorite producer been bumping Hav beats since the same year! Most influential rap duo in history!
Yea, Havoc has been repeatedly surprising me recently. He's staying true to his own style in the face of growing homogenization of his genre; he has been self-reflective enough to apologize about recent attacks he made on other rappers; and he doesn't just arrogantly say it takes him 20 mins to make hits, but recognizes the unpredictability of the creative process. I used to not think much of him when I compared his lyrical skills to prodigy, but he's actually a large talent!
The important lesson here from havoc is having the ear for the right sound. Like he knew the hi hat could be better and he went back and found it. It’s not about throwing loops and calling it a day. Its listening to it. And making the right change. Something so simple as a hi hat changed the whole track
I thought that too until I tried it. Most of the best hip-hop producers use samples in such a way that its not at all just taking something catchy and throwing a thump and crack to it, even when it might sound like that. The layering and alteration of samples, attention to detail, the fact that it always sounds completely diff from the og sources. It's easy to make instruments work together as it's in their design but samples can be trickier.
its actually harder considering usually older experiened DJs were in their little community church choirs and understand music, and how to build off of it. All these "from scratch" djs build off the same common chord structures, that everyones already done... same 808s same blah blah... plus sampling gives it such a genuine hip hop feel
