Honestly for me I liked Murakami much more. Reading Ishiguro I just felt melancholy and the twist in Klara and The Sun was wayy too weak to justify reading the 3/4ths before that, which was quite boring
Hi! This is the first video of yours i've seen, and I loved it! I now have all of these books on my wishlist haha!! p.s you're excitement is amazing, and endearing. I've just subscribed ✨☺
You are really soft-spoken. Growing up, I had a loud personality and everyone told me to speak softly so I always wanted to sound like you. Random rant 🙂
I’ve never enjoyed watching someone talk about books as much as you! Your sweet personality and enthusiasm just bursts through the video. You are the loveliest person on TH-cam. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? Where you grew up, went to school, career, what you spend on books? ❤❤❤
It would be so much fun if you did, like, a ranking or top ten of your favorite book covers, taking us through what you love about them, why they work as covers and maybe a visual analysis of them. 😍
The books are so gorgeous! I’m from Japan so I read in Japanese but,I’ll recommend you Osamu Dazai and Junichiro Tanizaki, they are Japanese modern classic authors!! Also I like Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura.
Thank you for sharing about your grandpa and about the job at the nursing home. It’s not something easy to tell and it’s actually really brave not only tell in a public form but to work there from the beginning because not a lot can handle this kind of job when you need to take care of people with dementia. It’s nice to have people like you And alsoooo glad to see that you have this giant stacks of books that now you made me want to read Happy reading! ✨🍁
I love that you comment on book covers and how you put them on display on your shelves. I agree with you on the yellow Ishiguro cover: too cold. Happy reading to you too!
I love seeing how people organize their bookshelves and how they lovingly add to them… I just recently turned one of the rooms in my house into a library/office and I am nowhere near at your level of gorgeousness but I love my books and will keep working on it
I have some of the Japanese books and they are beautiful. I’d also really recommend the Vintage Russian Classics since you’re a fan of Russian books too. They are absolutely gorgeous. I got all 6 of them, I couldn’t resist.
I love the colours of Faber, too, really nice. I now buy ebooks mainly, no room for print anymore so I really like looking at the covers of books that Booktubers show. These Faber and Vintage are so lovely. Japanese writers are really the thing at the moment. I have Remains of the Day but I haven't read it yet, I'll have to soon.
I LOVE Faber and Faber, they produce gorgeous poetry collections. I have their T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden and Philip Larkin poetry collections. Beautiful to hold, great paper, great font.
Ooooo this must be the Ishiguro set you purchased!! 😮 looking oh so pretty too Carolyn! Hair on point, outfit on point, and no makeup makeup looks Amazing! So pretty 🤩. Okay pressing play!!
You have such a ✨ Gorgeous ✨ collection of books, Carolyn! I watched your previous book collection videos and have added so many to my cart. You are really beautiful too ♥️
I need a video on why you loved Never Let Me Go so much and an analysis or something. Because after I heard you talk about it once, it was my pick for the book club I’m in. And I think I was the only one that liked it. But it wouldn’t make my top ten list. And I tend to love all the same books as you, so I’m curious about your love for this one. As always, enjoy your videos so much! 😊
The designer for the Faber and faber covers is Pete Adlington, they really are such beautiful designs, so simple yet such a statement is made with each cover
The new editions of Kazuo Ishiguru books are also available in Aus but they seem to be smaller (19.8cm in height). I love the cover design but am not very much convinced by how restricted it feels when opening the book. :( I can’t wait to read them all regardless. Happy readinng Carolyn❤. Always love and look forward to your content
Because of you, I’ve decided to start collecting these editions! I’ve only read one Ishiguro, but he immediately became one of my favorite authors too. Last year I read The Remains of the Day, but I plan to read Never Let Me Go by the end of this year! It’s a must. (Plus, that cover!!)
Well, you've talked me into it. I just ordered Never Let Me Go. And I threw in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea because they also sounded intriguing!
I highly recommend getting Makioka Sisters by Junichiro Tanizaki. It's one of my favourite Japanese classics and I think there's an Vintage edition of it. It reminds me little bit of Russian classics that focus on families.
Ok, I was reading A pale view of hills (it was incredible) when you put up your video where you bought these books. You convinced me to get Klara and the sun and an artist in a floating world, now I need the whole collection. CAROLINE, DON'T MAKE ME DO IT!!! 🤣
Just finished the wind-up bird chronicles. In the German translation it has more than 750 pages. I can't describe the pride, only took 15 years to work up the courage :-D Hope you get around to it sooner than I did... That edition is beautiful!
Omg I also bought the whole vintage Japanese collection, it's just stunning! I've finished reading Yoko Ogawa's book from that collection, called "The housekeeper and the professor". It was like a warm blanket for ur heart, such a lovely read, one of my 5 stars this year. I might have a softer spot for it as I've studied lots of maths during my life. It made me curious so after that I picked up "The memory police" from her ... and I adored it! It's a quite complicated book to find a reader for as the plot is not doing much, the characters are not necesarlly growing but I felt like she had an incredible talent of capturing feelings and intimate moments in her pages. I am looking forward to read "Never let me go" it's on my wishlist :D haha it will be my next purchase for sure.
Hey Carolyn. I did an Ishiguro's marathon during the pandemic. Love his books. A Pale View of Hills is bewildering, The Unconsoled is just bizarre, When We Were Orphans I find heart wrenching, The Remains of the Day I can't say without spoiling it. But it broke my heart a little🥺. Can't wait to see your reactions n hear your opinion.
A fellow booklover's excitement is just too contagious! And the Ishiguro ff edition so fine-tailored. I am jealous to the brink of those one hundred and one different book editions in english another more gorgeous than the other. Of course I have some of those darlings myself but for me reading in english is like looking at the spectacular scenery. Without glasses. I see some green and blue and the mountains but all the details and nyances are blurred and puns mistified. Btw, I learned a new word: a french flap. How many french things are there in the world? A dash in the text is in my language a french line. A french kiss. French fries. Amburger.
I just finished Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami and I really enjoyed the story. This was my first Murakami book and plan to continue reading. I have heard many people have a problem with the way he describes women (Emmie I think mentioned that in one of her videos). I loved Stoner. I listened on Audibles but immediately went out and bought a hard copy for my shelves. On your recommendation I want to pick up Beartown by Fredrik Backman. I have read A Man Called Ove and enjoyed it. Being a Swede myself I like to explore Swedish Authors. Love Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson. Thank you for your dedication to providing us with great bookish content.
I’m coincidentally reading three of the same author at the moment 😊 I read a work of an author at a time. Something about being blown away by someone’s work. Forgetting about them for a short while then coming back and old feeling trickling back. It’s like finding a long lost friend
Hi Carolyn, Hope you're feeling well, you sound like you're catching a cold. I'm intrigued about your job in a health care facility. I worked for 48 years in a local hospital and understand what you went through daily.I worked the midnight shift which was so hard for the elderly patients. Most of the older patients had "Sun downers" Syndrome.. as soon as the evening approached they became confused. Were you at one time considering a job in the health care field ? Your new books are very aesthetically pleasing, and very good reads. I always look forward to yours, and Emma's videos ! Have a wonderful weekend ! Cindy
Dunno if you'll notice this comment Carolyn but Murakami is my favorite author and The Windup Bird Chronicle that you've got there is my #1 favorite book. Most people prefer Norwegian Wood but I think The Windup Bird Chronicle is def his unsung masterpiece. I really can't wait to see you read that one. I've been watching your videos for a long time by the way, love the Russian stuff, Dostoevsky is my fave Russian author but I'm pretty hype to read Anna Karenina cause of how highly you recommend it!
If you want to read more classical Japanese translated lit, I highly recommend Kokoro by Soseki. It's my favorite translated Japanese book I've read so far :)
For older British editions I would suggest looking for second hand books from Oxfam. Their bookshops (in loads of cities here) are usually stacked with great classics. I’m pretty sure they ship to the USA but I’m not sure on pricing. Not only do you get some great older editions but you also support a charity!
On the topic of memory loss and aging, have you read The Night Guest by Fiona MacFarlane? It's from maybe about ten years ago, set in Australia. It's about an elderly woman whose memory is slipping, who wakes up aware of a tiger in her room, and who ends up with a caretaker coming into her life who may or may not be helpful. It's been a while since I read it, but I think it's around 250 pages. Might be something you'd enjoy.
Hi Carolyn, just discovered your channel and I m kinda enjoying it, it makes me relax so much and in this period I really need it (P.S. your voice is sooo wholesome
If you are interested in books about memory loss, I can highly recommend the book "out of mind" from the dutch author Bernlef. It is the most beautiful description about dementia I've ever read!
My favorite bookstore in London is Waterstones. I also order from Blackwells as well. I used to order a lot of books from the UK. Yesss 🤣
Hahahaha!! 😂 love this
i'm ready for the murakami v. ishiguro book club!
Yesssssss
Honestly for me I liked Murakami much more. Reading Ishiguro I just felt melancholy and the twist in Klara and The Sun was wayy too weak to justify reading the 3/4ths before that, which was quite boring

Yes, it's a very nice feeling appreciating the good work of another person.
I have those stunning vintage Japanese books on my Christmas wishlist. Really hoping my husband gets the hint 😂
I hope he does too! 😂
I’ve never enjoyed watching someone talk about books as much as you! Your sweet personality and enthusiasm just bursts through the video. You are the loveliest person on TH-cam. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself? Where you grew up, went to school, career, what you spend on books? ❤❤❤

I can't get enough of unboxing videos :)
Nocturne seems like a must read. The cover is beautifully thought out! Thanks again.
Read Ishiguro’s Remains of the Day and absolutely loved it. One of my favorite books. I intend to read all of his works too.
I love that you comment on book covers and how you put them on display on your shelves. I agree with you on the yellow Ishiguro cover: too cold. Happy reading to you too!
I would love to see the rest of your bookcases sometime, the shelves above your head are gorgeous and I imagine you have so many more
I’ve done a few videos showing the bookshelf above me, but I’m definitely going to keep doing bookshelf tours :)

I don't mind the light shining on you Carolyn, you are lovely to look at :) Thank you for another great video!
I love love love When We Were Orphans ! Its so different , i just love how Ishiguro presents memory in it
I love the colours of Faber, too, really nice. I now buy ebooks mainly, no room for print anymore so I really like looking at the covers of books that Booktubers show. I love your channel so much. You have such a gentle voice. Can't get enough. Thank you for everything you do.
I think you’ll love the housekeeper and the professor! I absolutely adored it and still think about it years later
I love your puns, e.g., "shelf control"!
I LOVE Faber and Faber, they produce gorgeous poetry collections. I have their T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden and Philip Larkin poetry collections. Beautiful to hold, great paper, great font.
3 of my favorites, tho tbh I need to give Auden more time.
My eyes !!!! 😍🤌🏼 Gorgeous gorgeous edition just like you are ;)

The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka deals with dementia and was incredibly beautiful! These editions are sooo stunning 😍
You have such a ✨ Gorgeous ✨ collection of books, Carolyn! I watched your previous book collection videos and have added so many to my cart. You are really beautiful too ♥️

The Sailor who Fell from Grace with the Sea is phenomenal. When you read it you know it’s something special. It’s unlike anything else.
I LOVED an artist of the floating world! :)
So glad!!!

I am the biggest fan of Ishiguro 🥺 Also, Come Rain or Come Shine is a story from Nocturnes.
The designer for the Faber and faber covers is Pete Adlington, they really are such beautiful designs, so simple yet such a statement is made with each cover

Carolyn, do you do a podcast by chance? Between you and Emmy, your voices are so therapeutic, I can listen to you guys all day

I highly recommend getting Makioka Sisters by Junichiro Tanizaki. It's one of my favourite Japanese classics and I think there's an Vintage edition of it. It reminds me little bit of Russian classics that focus on families.
They look lovely, cery simple but striking

tbh, I never would've thought of the cassette for the NLMG cover, but you're right -- the half shadow cast on the lonely tape is kinda brill

I LOVE watching your unboxing/book haul videos! Will we get a birthday book haul/unboxing video?
I’m so glad! Yes, you will! :)
@@CarolynMarieReads I cannot wait!
Carolyn, I just watched one of your videos and you mentioned wanting to read more italian books. You must read Elena Ferrante's neopolitian series!
I have the first book in the series on my shelves, so I hope to soon! :) thank you for the lovely recommendation!

I have not read the novel but the movie based on Remains of the Day is quite good. Thanks.
Thanks I just impulse bought 2 of them 😅❤
Amazing 😂
Love your video
If you are interested in books about memory loss, I can highly recommend the book "out of mind" from the dutch author Bernlef. It is the most beautiful description about dementia I've ever read!
My favorite bookstore in London is Waterstones. I also order from Blackwells as well. I used to order a lot of books from the UK. If you want to get into Asian literature, I would recommend Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong. He is a Chinese author.
I read Klara and The Sun and I thought it was alright. Should I pick up the others?
I’d definitely recommend reading his other works! (Especially Never Let Me Go)
Shelf control 😂 That‘s a great one - at last, now I now the desease. But I think, at least in my case, there is no cure possible… or desirable 😉
If you‘re into magical realism, you‘ll gonna like Murakami. However, personally, I like his short fiction even more than his novels.
I wish my bookshelves could be as organized as the ones shown in your videos 😦
Can you do a video of pretty covers of books I didn't like and books I like with not sot pretty covers ??
Please, do read The Graveyard Book, don't put it off! Accompanied by the audiobook read by Neil Gaiman, it was one of my most charming book experiences of my life.
Did you say you need to have some ‘shelf’ control or self control ? Both made sense though 😂 by the way .. Enjoyed your unboxing books❤
I did say “shelf” control 😂 So glad you enjoyed :)
also wow you’re so gorgeous
Oh my goodness, you’re too kind!!!
your hair looks gorgeous in a side part!
Aw thank you! 🥰
Are you familiar with books from Chilterns Classics? They are so beautiful.
You should watch a favorite Japanese movie of mine “Late Spring” by Yasujiro Ozu.
Can you maybe put a list of the books you review? Sometimes I listen as I'm cooking or cleaning and hear you describe a book but have missed the title..
Dont judge the book by its cover.
You must get Out from the vintage Japanese books. Its a weird one, but worth reading.
I almost did…now I must! 😂
