YOU ARE WRONG!

- We are almost always wrong, maybe not all the way wrong, but at least a little bit. Even the simplest questions have vast complexities built into them, and understanding that we never fully understand things leads to a much healthier and more effective relationship with the world.
It's really hard to come to terms with, but there it is. If you're curious about why we don't drink Pig's milk, Hank Sock posted an essay that is online at nerdfighters.ning.com/profiles...

“I’m not the writer.” You just wait, past Hank. You just wait.
+
I can't believe that he was wrong. Who could have predicted that?
Wait, I think past Hank did...
I'm just rewatching Vlogbrother videos. Can we have a "Truth Resists Simplicity" t-shirt please? and also, lip balm on 2011 Hank shelve? :3
No thanks. That's way above what I could afford. I'll make do with a white t-shirt and sharpie
+Vee XD
And now Hank Green IS a professional writer (and like 19 other things 😂)
I'm never wrong...I'm just right in a totally unusual fashion.
One of the best pieces of advice my grandfather has ever given me (and that is a weird soup of things) is to never wholly believe anything anyone says, but instead to take it all with a grain of salt. I think he was subtly trying to tell me that what he was telling me might not, in fact, be correct, and if I go around flaunting that information I'll end up making a fool of myself, but regardless, it was very sound advice.
"professional goof ball" Can we please make this a Major? I would be amazing at that job!
"Is there a word for that? I feel like there should be a word for that." Irony. The word you want is irony.
Ghastmask Zombie I think it's more likely a paradox , rather than an irony . " a simple truth which says how rare simple truths are. "
Paradoxical irony?
That is the more common interpretation of the term irony. It is one of the hardest terms to define, and it could perfectly fit this situation, but there's a lot of people that will argue that this interpretation is theoretically incorrect (kind of in the same sense that people will argue against the figurative use of "literally" because it is "wrong" - when in a word's meaning is actually defined by it's usage, not the other way around)
'Paradox'?
this is one of those vlogbrothers videos that stays with me and i wish more people would take a moment to remember its message
I just got this quote as a tattoo, one of my favorites from vlogbrothers
On an unrelated note... Is that Corndog Lip Balm on your shelf? Seriously?
It IS a Corndog Lip Balm. Hahahaha
Something that might cheer you up: most of the time, what's more important than having the right answers is asking the right questions. Love your show!
You have just articulated everything I have been stewing over for the past few months. Thank you, Hank, for expressing that so much more eloquently than I could :)
I love how Hank and John are so completely different from one another and yet still so awesome :)
I really like this."The simple truth is; truth isn't simple". A definition of truth that requires an understanding of truth in order to fully grasp the truth of a description of a specific quality of truth? And in doing so, both contradicts itself AND makes a clear and singularly truthful statement? Which in and of itself is a contradiction? Nope, I'm pretty sure there isn't a word to cover that... UNTIL NOW! I present... contravusion. An apparent contradiction that requires a deja vu aspect [already knowing the meaning before you learn the definition], in order to provide clarity when melding two opposing statements into one cohesive statement.
I really like your bookcase. It makes me happy when I see it. It's so full and nice!
Loving the conversational tone the videos have taken. Loving the topics. Keep it coming, guys.
we call that a contradiction. It's like saying "all things in moderation" which of course implies that you must show moderation in showing moderation.
TBomb15 that's what I'm gonna say next time my mom yells at me for eating an entire crate of blueberries in one sitting, "moderation in moderation"
But Hank, there is no good or evil, there is only power and those too weak to seek it.
Nice quote
Great... I think we need to start searching for horcruxes again.
at east we don't have to stop protecting the Elder wand
One Truth to rule them all, One Truth to find them,
One Truth to bring them all and in the lightness bind them.
In the land of Valinor where the Lightness lies.
I get this. I think I am a nerd. The second "I" in "I think I am a nerd" I wrote "i" and I corrected it. I am a nerd
Why doesn't this have more views is what I'm wondering, this video is so very accurate and would probably broaden the understanding of many others leading to a general sense of betterment.
I love love love your philosophical stuff. You have brains and use them and celebrate them and get others to do the same. This is why you guys are my favourite channel on the TH-cams. And why I'm still watching 4 years on :)
"I feel like I need to do something now to prove I'm the professional goofball, maybe I'll just-" *SLAP* "Owwww!"
Point proven, Hank.
god i love the greens.
Totally enjoyed this video! I have subscribed and look forward to viewing many more of your excellent and insightful rants.
This was very deep. I just love when the Vlogbrother get philosophical.
I have to disagree. The answer to life, the universe and everything is 42 and that's pretty simple, isn't it?
OK smarty pants, what's the question?
+Sarah Gent whats 7*6?
Er... 42.
But that's not the question!
Sarah Gent how many roads must a man walk down?
2:29 "because he was addicted to alcoholic drugs" -Hank Green 2011
Alcohol and drugs
I know but that's what it sounded like
I love this! I hate it when people are wrong and oversimplify things and I try to explain that's the subject is more complicated, but they don't believe me and I am unable to explain it to them, but they continue to think they're right and I'm wrong.
The truth resists simplicity...
Such a beautiful quote.
Hank...the professional goofball. :)
The word is Irony good sir
I love how you say "effective". Then again, I love your diction, in general.
WOW...I Can't stop watching them! Keep them coming!
I think maybe oxymoron is the word for that
Maybe just verbal irony then?
Mason shoalmire banana ? maybe
No... the closest thing I can think of is a preterition... But not exactly...
Hank Sock has an odd accent. Home schooled?
Sean Webb nah, just chain smoking for 10 years
I love watching Hank's videos when he's super excited about something and I don't really understand a word he's saying.
This rant is the summary of all that frustrates me. Thank you. I favorited this and I will show all my friends so that they understand this shit at least a little bit!
Thank you so much for pointing out that commercial. I told all my friends how wrong it was and NOBODY CARED! I'm glad I'm not the only one.
god i love the vlogbrothers! everything they do is awesome!
I'm finally getting around to watching videos from the beginning of the year, and this one reminds me so much of my Philosophy of Science class! I think you would like the class (although half of the people in it are part of the "Study of the Mind" program and tend to derail about whether we can ever say anything is real). It's mostly about what makes a good theory, how we know what we know, and the demarcation of science.
2:06 I was totally expecting the sock puppet to say "Well, I do have a lot of experience with your mother"
I've just been staring at the corndog lip balm on the shelf behind you... I didn't actually catch what you said because it's so fricken amazing that it distracted me.
"Sophie's World" is one of my favourite books. I first encountered it when I was eight, in the form of a mini-series on Norwegian TV, and loved it. I have no idea how many times I've read it, but it's probably at least a dozen times. Have you read "The Solitaire Mystery"? It is, in a sense, the predecessor of "Sophie's World", and it is equally excellent.
I want to make a contribution to that awesomely whimsical statement. "The truth resists simplicity and so should you".
Hank, I love you and this video. I just had a 2 and a half hour discussion with some of my friends about a variety of topics, namely religion, education, altruism, etc. And this video reminded me of the fact that we are wrong a lot of the time and we should accept that. And we should accept that other people can be both right and wrong just like us.
1:40, and now I understand why there are videos about pigs milking in the suggestions column.
Very clear and concise! you know i've been trying to explain to by gf these ideas for years, but now all i have to do is show her this video.
He's NOW the writer ('An absolutely remarkable thing' comes out on 25th September 2018 and is available in book storres everywhere)
THAT COMMERCIAL ANNOYED THE POOP OUT OF ME!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!
when I saw you for the first time (in an ad on a video) I thought "Omg is he trying to copy the guy from mental floss? they sound exactly the same!" lol
it's weird because i was just thinking about how we as humans don't really KNOW anything we speculate and assume but often there is a bit of falsehood in almost everything today and I thought "hey let's watch some old nerdfighter videos" and I came across this. Love you guys :)
Vlogbrothers videos are just getting better and better and more Vlogbrothery every single time they upload.
Also: Lego Harry Potter.
"For every complex problem, there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong."
H. L. Mencken
@MunaxD depends on whether or not its a 1-way door. there are doors that swing both ways...
dude i think Ive been a nerd fighter and i didn't even know it these guys are awesome!!!
I noticed Catch 22, Will Grayson Will Grayson, and a TMBG poster in the background.
...AWESOME.
it's always a good day when there's a puppet in one of hank's videos.
I completely agreeee!
I've been sitting my final high school exams and only recently discovered that it's so much easier to study for maths. You either have the answer or you don't, it's quick (sometimes) and not much conflict.
But humanity subjects, which I take a lot of, have millions of wrong, possible, or right answers. A simple question can have a variety of answers depending on how much each person knows or how they perceive the question. Crazy, really.
yeh...
This is what art is. The search not to simplify, but explore these incredibly complicated truths and try try try to get even a feeling of the whole of it, in one space. And maybe a lot of our melancholy in art comes from the fact we know where doing an impossible task and will most likely still be a little bit wrong when were done. Thanks Hank, you just gave a student a brainwave.
The closed captioning is perfect... Either someone altered it or... MIND BLOWN
i love how these videos are not stupid but funny and yet intellectually stimulating :) wow i took so long spelling those last 2 words lol
I love the mini guitar on the puppet
This is so true. I have learned that, on most things, I am almost always wrong. It's not a matter of, I don't lack knowledge, it's because I failed to look at from a different perspective. The world is a very confusing place. Anyone who says it simple, isn't thinking hard enough. (Although, what I just wrote maybe wrong).
watching this makes me feel better after some one tries to make something so simple, when in reality it's just not as simple as they think it is. thanks hank. :)
@EdwardHowton what i meant by"also I'm not "tapping out"..." and the rest of the comment is that you didn't need to say "Thank you for tapping out" leaving it where it was would've sufficed but instead saying something like that just makes people argue on regardless of whether they've already been defeated or not
Whenever I need a helping hand or some way to bring back my faith in the human race, I find it in Nerdfighteria.
The mere existence of such well thought out statements, the conversations in comments, the everything, makes life worthwhile.
Even the term Nerdfighteria, to continue Hank's point, resists simplicity.
Nerdfighters are not just one simple thing, but many varied things, many different peoples. These people, as a whole, make up Nerdfigtheria, the greatest hypothetical place on Earth.
I keep rewinding to look at Hank's amazing ventriloquism omg Hank i can't.
"Is there a word for that? ...There should be a world for that?" -Hank Green
This is featured in the Education section on TH-cam, Hank Green, You have done it again
@dudejohnny Before I continue this conversation any further, let me ask, is this a complex fraction?
I have a statement that goes along with your statement. "All modeld are wrong. Some are useful." Amazing how well that works in this world.
You sure hit the nail on the head, Hank. I got excited listening to you. I've never heard anyone else actually say that we don't know anything. (Except maybe philosophers, but even then that idea is said indirectly or consequently). This is why I don't belong to a religion. Our brains can't comprehend the phenomena that occurs around us. That is what I believe.
LOL My 9th grade history teacher was OBSESSED with the Magna Carta. We spent almost a month studying it! We even had debates about it and what it meant! hahaha so I was cracking up when you said that!
I would be interested to hear what present Hank's thoughts are on this topic
I'm guessing the word synecdoche is close to what is being looked for but I don't know if it would fit this example.
best day description- sitting on the couch in your pjs watching vlogbrothers while eating Doritos lemonade and for dinner you will eat pizza..... it is the best day
have you read all the books on your shelf?
you just correctly described fallacies in your last statement which makes me feel better about my own use of them
Well said! Also, what's up with the lip balm on the self? Why is it unused?
Honestly, I wasn't listening to half of the words you just said. I just enjoyed watching you rant! *clicks replay button*... :)
This reminded me of something that my physics elective professor said - "Science is a way of thinking. We are only certain that something is right until it is proven to be wrong or inaccurate or incomplete."
Powering the amusement park with hyper-drives sounds cool.
The rides would go really fast :)
When you live in an ivory tower, it must be so amazing knowing how you can use words to ,,prove,, you re right about whatever you think is true.
Wow Hank, thanks for making me think too ^_^ you and John have some really great things to say ^_^
I don't know why, but after this I feel like listening to this year's RSA talks. You should check them out if you haven't already.
@talyashatzky
Well, yes. I think Hank's point here is to highlight the uncertaintiy of knowledge. Also the use of the quantifier, "almost", highlights the fact that this blanket statement has excpetions, and the speaker, Hank, knows that there are exceptions.
Why is there an unopened, still in the package thing of chapstick on the shelf?
I have taken this advice to heart a little bit. I have pretty much stopped giving advice, altogether. When I think about the advice I've given and the opinions I've said, I've realised that I have no idea, what-so-ever, if what I said is even true. Over the last few years, it's dawned on me just how little I actually know. I don't even know if the comment I'm about to leave is right or correct.
"Because at least there I know the difference between good and evil.."
I know how you feel man, I know how you feel.
just keep hitting the nail on the head. DFTBA
OF COURSE! perfect sense! and dayamn girl did u see laquaishas-lafunda-shaniqua-alla mu akmah's hair today? damn i wanna know who did her weave
why does the front page only show hanks videos...(i have only watched hank's videos because they are featured in front page...)
So, ad to the right of this video when I watched it was for Us Weekly. One of the covers was of Pattinson and Stewart and the caption read: "Why She'll Break His Heart."
Not even fake relationships are simple, Hank.
SIR, YOU ARE A MATURE AND HELTHY AND EFFECTVE PERSON. THANKS FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
POV: you're here, it's 2021, and they're both the writer now
MORE HANK SOCK!!!
I'm just glad this was posted on my birthday
@bullfrog72401 It's called closed captions (CC) And if you don't like him then why are you watching?
@chexiick lol. it's CORNDOG lipbalm which would explain why hank has it.
Do you think we will ever have a specialist for everything? It would be quite nice if there will be, at one point, a person for everything.
YOU READ KODOCHA!!!! you are my favorite youtuber now. Also your intelligence is impressive which is why I watched you in the first place.
