      I actually thought it feeling like that was bad and I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, trying to get it to feel like individual plucks instead of being glued to the string. After seeing this and making a couple small adjustments I see now that I was actually a lot closer than I thought all along. This is why learning from others is important instead of just trying to teach yourself everything!!!

    What worked for me, I believe is called edge picking. Hold your pick perpendicular to the string instead of a 45 degree angle. Like how Michael Angelo batio and Alexi laiho pick. Only downside is you have to be a bit more accurate because it's harder to mute strings, but that's what worked for me

    • @simonlinser8286
      @simonlinser8286 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its true, but really it's about escape angle and doing that sideways 45 thing can sound bad because you end up with scraping sounds but it depends on how heavy your strings and pick are. I know what you mean, but it is more about attack and escape angle for the pick in my opinion

    • @ryj2848
      @ryj2848 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mustaine has recommended perpendicular too for sound quality of the notes.

      @@ryj2848this works especially well for him I think because he plays with relatively thin picks, tortex .73mm i believe. You almost have to play that way with a pick that thin due to its tendency to bend and flex. Works really well for players with larger hands and a relatively lighter touch 🤘

    • @ultimadum7785
      @ultimadum7785 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll add to this that you should hold the pick closer to the tip than you'd initially expect. Holding if from the back has way too much leeway and is sloppy where as closer is more tight and you don't have to move it with much effort. Also helps with pinch harmonics too.

    • @Brads-strung-out
      @Brads-strung-out ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive played 30 odd years. I find a rigid style only fits a limited genre of riff. Usually metal. Rock needs more relaxed motion, so its limited. I finger pick slap and use pick in the same bars or bar for bar. So apart from metal id actually have my pick on a solid 45 degree angle. 95% of anything I do with a pick is on an agle.
      I recently seen one guy telling his auidience to only hold a pick one way. Was really bad advice. This guy is pretty much saying try different things, which is the right advice. Art isnt black and white.

    • @Brads-strung-out
      @Brads-strung-out ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ultimadum7785I use both edges of the pick, dull and sharp and the reason for that is I keep the pick tucked up in my ring finger and pull it in and out mid riff, so by the time pick makes it to my fingers its 50/50 which edge I land on so Ive learnt to use both edges.

    Also underrated is what pick is the best for you. For me, changing to a slightly thicker pick with a bevel tip worked wonders because I don't have to work as much for the pick to go through the string. That being said, it's completely preference-based; Paul Gilbert, the master of alternate picking, has always used regular shaped and relatively thin picks, if I remember properly.

I don't understand how you can maintain this for long periods without tiring your shoulder out. I have to play all wrist always which uses my forearm muscles. What's even more amazing with Hammet is he does this with speed across strings as well. I guess I'm more like Hetfield with the tremolo picking all wrist, but it's harder to do across strings...

    Yeah flat to string and you will hit a maximum. You turn the pick a 45 to the string then the pick face is now wider, meaning the string you aim for will be hit faster than a flat edge, return the travel and it hits the opposing string, also faster. Turning the pick has the edge hitting the string faster. Flat = slow. Turn pick= fast

    Nah I always change the way I hold my pick whether I'm strumming multiple strings as chords or I'm picking individual strings. Whenever I pick individual strings I think I do do the technique correctly but when I strum chords I hold it with three fingers and my thumb because it helps me hold it tight while being able to strum really really hard without the risk of dropping it. And I've gotten good at seamlessly switching my holding position between strumming sections and picking sections.
    I'm honestly surprised more people don't do this.

    Ive been trying so hard to figure out why i struggle in this certain bpm range, or rather, how to fix this struggle (I kinda know the WHY, has something to do with how I hold slight tension in my fingers/hand to make very small yet fast movements for tremolo picking, but my regular picking is different)

    I can think of one technique to train that. ask my girlfriend. it involves tap in the "guitar body" every now and than. :)

    What string gauge are you using? And what do you recommend?

      I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9-42 and they're great. There's no problems with them whatsoever

    And if you don't practice well, you can develop bad picking even if you used to be good for years, so don't be lazy. 😮

    Heres the reason why i dont pick fast enough: because my dad always told me "up stroke = bad" so i ALWAYS downstroke
    When i do get fast, you better start calling me James Hetfield 2.0
    Because i WILL find you

      Hetfield is a beast! But don't forget that he also uses alternate picking too, otherwise he'd never be able to play anything like Battery, Fight Fire With Fire, all the fast thrash tracks they've ever released etc 👍
