Lasted about 6 months, before I broke my lease & came back up north here, to the 610. Now I'm in West Chester. Close to Philly & loving life again. It's not for everybody, I suppose but most people I know take pride in PA & their specific locations.

      Pittsburgh is a wannabe Southern accent. When it comes to the other ones, they sound so screwed up. Philly (historically) is a wannabe NYC, especially among Jews. Combine some German with some NYC and some hillbilly, and you have PA in a nutshell. This is what I also call the "YT Hobbyist accent," since most collectors of ____ are from PA (or NJ, outside Philly). There's an angry teacher that I made comments about, that hails from your state (compilation somewhere). Record collectors and antique items, mostly for hobbyists. I am sure there are hobbyists in other states (like mine...IL).

      Definitely agree that it's being taken too far, I think the issue is more with people not appreciating the grouping of one particular behavior/accent in this case with a social or economic class. So it's not crazy to hear the word classist here, but I don't think it necessarily applies haha

    • @yikes3720
      @yikes3720 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I can't speak for the other terms, but in most cities (especially on the East Coast & Midwest) working class people tend to have stronger local accents that middle/upper class people. Typically if people go away for college, they're exposed to people from all over, and many people's accents either get less pronounced or disappear altogether because they're not surrounded by people talking the same way as them everyday. As a result, (generally speaking) people with college degrees are less likely to have a super strong regional accent, but someone who has lived and worked in the same place their entire life and not been exposed to many people outside of that area (generally more working class/blue collar people) are more likely to have a strong accent. In a lot of cities, people with thick local accents are assumed to be working class, so dissing regional accents can also be seen as a dig towards that area's working class.

    • @GalaxyGal-
      @GalaxyGal- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Language has been used as a class divider for centuries. For example “y’all” was a proper contraction until the poor white farmers and slaves started using it, then it was considered “improper.”
      Pittsburgh is a traditionally middle class city with little to no upper class men. That’s why their accent is “the ugliest.”
      What about white southerners and the “black accent”? People almost always view these two accents and dialects as “uneducated,” no matter how educated the speaker is. It’s almost always because those two accents are associated with working class people and poor people.

    • @GalaxyGal-
      @GalaxyGal- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      simon wang “He who learns nothing from history is doomed to repeat it.” History has always favored the upper class socially, whether it be their dialect, accent, skin color, or opinions, and disregarded the middle class. It’s just an example of classism.

  • @uhohspaghettios2391

    I'm glad they (briefly) brought up the classist element of declaring the Pittsburgh accent ugly. My parents worked very hard to make sure my siblings and I had almost no discernable Western PA accent. When I asked why they were constantly correcting me on my pronunciation of certain words, they said it was because people would think I was "stupid" if I had that accent. Though I've never asked, I can't help but think they learned that exact lesson the hard way when they tried to build their careers outside of the Pittsburgh area. Much love to all my yinzers! ❤

Britain had been attempting to retake the United States, and it failed at this. Its invading force was repelled by the US, which seems more like win. The war was also a blow to the belief that the only "real" country is a country led by a monarch dropped from the sky by God .

    Pennsylvania has some of the best universities in the nation, huge agricultural output, especially in dairy and orchard sectors. It has terrific symphony orchestras and superb architecture. It also has estimated remaining reserves of seven billion short tons of anthracite, which is a fantastic energy and chemical resource. After Obama finishes his term, we may see a lot more utilization of this super fuel. Note: I will not respond to any comments from Green Freaks & Climate Change OCD fanatics. Bottom line: Pennsylvania is heartland America, one of the reasons why the US is a superpower. When the US has to throw a punch, PA is in the muscle! Here is a salute to PA from the Cornbelt!

    I grew up in North East Pennsylvania and I ended up living in Scranton for the better part of a decade. I visited Philly and spent several weeks in Pittsburgh. There definitely is a Scranton and Pittsburgh accent but I found that 80% of Scranton doesnt have a heavy accent and a good portion of Pittsburg residents dont have a thick accent. They use some interesting colloquial expressions that threw me at times, but it's not ubiquitous. Honestly I think Northeastern Pennsylvanians in general have a fairly non regional diction and speak a fairly clean "American English." Maybe that's just bias though, although I have heard that said by people outside of the region.

      Pierre x Yeah, I live in Florida and I wondered what these guys were whining about. How often does anyone even talk about their state? As soon as something weird happens, people jump to guessing it was Florida. Ok, there was that guy that got leprosy from having sex with is pet armadillo, and maybe a few other things... but we're normal, we're ok, really, really we are, you believe us don't you, don't you? Totally normal, everything is fine here, nothing to see. Quick eveybody, try to act normal, they're watching us, I can feel them watching us again. Why won't they go away and just leave us be? Are you still there? LEAVE US ALONE! But anywho, Florida has a large population and a freedom of information act that allows reporters easy access to crazy stories which results in more people finding out about anything odd that does happen here.

    I was born and raised near Scranton. I moved out of NEPA because I found it economically depressing. Having a college degree doesn't guarantee a decent income there. However, my neighbors were some of the most friendly people you will ever meet. Most of us are second and third generations of European immigrants and there is a sense of camaraderie.

      And you're right about the college education meaning nothing. I have one and it was useless...the ONE time I got called for an interview for a job that had to do with my degree, but I made more working as a manager of a convenience store! No joke! They wanted all this education and experience, yet only paid $8 an hour. Ridiculous. Needless to say, I stayed at the store!

    I feel for you, Scranton and Pittsburgh. I am from Springfield, MO, and no nationwide study or article that has come out about Springfield has ever been positive. The two things that get brought up the most are the extremely high number of meth labs per capita (one of the drug’s street names, 417, actually comes from the area code on our phone numbers) and the high rate of cigarette smoking.

      Gʟᴏʙᴇ Oɪʟ 万 / 0030 I think the word you're looking for is stereotypical, and the Pittsburgh accent is very distinct. The Scranton bit was about the city itself, not necessarily the accent.
