Wonderful job! Great to see SA's version of the venerable HJ Holden Statesman. If you decided to sell this in the country of its birth (Australia) you'd make a packet of money.
One in this condition? About 80-90,000 AUD. That's 59650 USD to around 67000 USD. No need to change the badges back to the Holden namplates or the grill. The SA origin would add to the saleability because of the rarity. Contact Shannons Auto Auctions in AU to discuss overseas auctions. I'm not affiliated with them at all, btw...I just know they do a good job and are well renowned in Australia.
My Pa was nie ryk genoeg om die Constantia of die Caprice te koop nie, maar ons het eers met Rangers en toe Komando's groot geword. Na die Komando het my Pa n 2,8 Commodore gekoop, dit was n werld verwyder van die Komando. Pragtig voorbeeld.
A superb restoration, and congratulations to the owner. As an Australian, it's interesting to see the differences in the interior trim compared to what Holden sold in Oz. The front seats look like HQ units, as opposed to the upgraded seating HJ models received throughout the range. The doors look like the ones that the HQ Statesman Custom had. They lack the timber embellishments, and lighting that De Villes had here in Oz. Beautiful paint colour, and it looks like a local South African one. Motor looks like a Holden 308,as opposed to the 307 Chevrolet. All in all, the vehicle is a credit to all involved. Thanks for the upload 😁👍
@@JanBal007 Little known fact: These cars were also shipped to Mazda in Japan without engines and transmissions, and fitted with a Mazda Wankel engine and were known as the Roadpacer.
I had one of these (1980 HZ Holden Statesman) in NZ. "T" shift auto selector. Unusual fuel filler relocation, is that a standard mod for the South African 'Holdens' to shift the filler from behind the rear number plate to behind the rear wheel?
In New Zealand that car is known as a Holden Statesman De Ville. There are many similar here in this country with exact same colour. What motor in this one 5.0 litre or 5.7 litre?
Great to see a happy owner! Judging by your excellent video, the front of this engine appears to feature a bolt-on alloy case for the water pump, which is a signature design of Holden V8s but not the Chevrolet ‘small block’. Thus it would be a 308 CID (5,044 cc) Holden V8?
Interesting that it appears a HX car (with HJ Premier nose?) but still with the HQ style front seats. I think the HQ series were AQ series Chevs in Sth Af. Did they follow that with AJ AX etc?
Seems to be a mix of parts. Should be HJ. The HX got the multi function column stalk. You can see the wiper control is on the dash on the example in the video. The dash is correct for HJ Statesman. The Kingswood and Premier got the long speedo, Statesman and Monaro got the square round gauges.
Do you know anything about the Chrysler "Super Charger" from the 1970's? Aussie charger body RSA 383 cu in engine? My friend was a high speed pursuit cop and had one for his chase car.He told me about catching a runaway car thief from 30 miles away of his position.
How is it that South African market cars had power windows back then? As a Argentine who was born in the 70s, none of the local market 'luxury' cars had power windows, just the imported ones. Now in the 60s, Rambler cars there had them, bit certainly NOT the 70s.
It must have been flagship. Even our W116 Mercedes only the later editions had them. Worst part South Africa is extremely hot. Aircon only became common in the mid 1980s.
Holden Australia sure knew how to make unique cars. Would sound much better with twin system.....
My grand father have this car

One of the most beautiful designs ever created by General Motors-Holden's. Why it was never brought to North America will always be a mystery to me.
You must import one. You will have one of the only in the US
@@JanBal007 And definitely the only one here in Canada.

I can only imagine how slow and underperforming they'd be.
