    Thanks for the honest review Golden. I feel relieved you were not paid or sponsored by that company to just say only positive things. Bad build quality to go along with bad sound quality is to buy more expensive DAC/AMP like the 11 Broadway by WOO Audio.

    Haven't had these issues with mine. I actually prefer the amp on EF400 with most of my headphones to a Chord Anni. I've regularly been taken aback by how surprising the EF400 can sound. I thought the Arya v3 also sounded excellent on it, but my comparisons are limited to a Lyr3, a Mojo 2, a liquid spark, and an Anni, with the Lyr3 being most preferable for my tastes with the EF400 just behind. I run both balanced and single-ended without issue as well. I haven't noted any "softness" to the sound though I prefer the OS modes to the NOS modes. I find the EF400 to have some of the characteristics of the Bluemini 2 with snappy/poppy dynamic contrast in the mid-range. Only thing I can say is I bought my unit on Amazon before I saw anyone had a video on it. Usually initial supplies have the most issues but I don't know, mine has been great, especially as a DAC.

      how does is compare to mojo 2. I am looking into ef400 for my meze 109 even though I have mojo 2

    • @dasninjastix
      @dasninjastix ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reign2027 well honestly if you have a Mojo 2 I would just pair that with a less expensive amp. The Mojo 2 and the 109 Pro are a great combo already but if you're looking for something cleaner or warmer in terms of the amp stage, you could just grab something like a Piety or a JDS Labs amp or even a Topping or Schiit amp. I would not pick an EF400 over the Mojo 2 because of the Mojo's versatility and DSP capabilities. For less money you could just grab a Questyle M15 dongle which sounds as good as the EF400 with the 109 Pro. Or a Cayin RU6 if you want something smoother. The EF400 is great if you own some more demanding planars and only need a USB input. It's honestly overkill (a couple of times over) for something like the 109 pro. I really like the EF400 with t60rp Argons, the HEKse, and the Liric. Don't get me wrong it sounds great with the 109 pro but I gotta use an IEMatch adapter from iFi to feel comfortable using it with the 109. If my finger slips adjusting the volume there'd go my hearing.

      @@dasninjastix I've a fiio k7 lying around. Should I just connect mojo using 3.5 to RCA output?

    • @dasninjastix
      @dasninjastix ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reign2027 can't hurt 😎 but ultimately depends on what you're looking for in terms of sound. I know nothing about FiiO amp to judge. I've run my Mojo 2 into a Piety, a Liquid Spark, a Lyr 3, and an xduoo 602-mt. I think it sounds best on its own or into the Piety. The Mojo 2 is a pretty stellar value for easy to drive cans, so unless you're wanting a particular sound signature or effect I think you already have a really great fit for the 109 Pro.

    It would be fair to withdraw that review as it is based on a defective unit…
    Saying that, it shows Hifiman substandard QC process.
    I have been through two units with a crackling/popping issue when listening to 16b 44.1kHz music in NOS mode (OS mode is perfect)…

      I have both the RME and the ef400 and while the RME is great, crisp and sharp the ef400 just has this analog wetness that is hard to get away from. Provided this review is just based on a poor recalled unit, it’s very compelling for what it is. That being said however, I already have an issue with the OS light blinking intermittently and just not working at times. It’s a small thing, but I don’t want to be jammed up if something else isn’t working down the line waiting weeks for warranty work. Regardless, the sound is definitely killer on it. I’m looking forward to more time with the RME as I just got it today and letting it run on my cans in the background. Meze elites, fwiw.

      It hits beautifully. It's stand out is the bass comes from the floor and surrounds you as a sub woofer would. Rather than a standard headphone sound of the bass beside your head on each side.
      Runner up for me would be the lcd2c. It is a rather smooth headphone with rolled off treble. However, the lack of high frequency details wouldn't be an issue with Movies / tv.

    I'm not an "audiofile" and am currently using the SSL2(audio interface, perfect for recording guitars and vocals), and it has a pretty clean sounding DAC in it. Considering how affordable it is, I don't really know if getting a dedicated audio amp is worth it, and would like to know how much better it can sound compared to my interface.

    • @enjoshi-godrez8775
      @enjoshi-godrez8775 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It completely depends on the headphone you are using. Cheaper headphones are less demanding of souce equipment because their drivers have greater distortion, and therefore, less technical effort to benefit from such an upgrade.

    • @adamgreenhill110
      @adamgreenhill110 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should get a dedicated amp - but the SSL2 DAC is great, I run it through a Schiit Magni amp for my PC (with 1990 Pros). My listening setup uses a Ferrum Erco and better headphones though. For music production the PC setup is perfect

    • @saikousocial
      @saikousocial ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends on the headphones you're using, and how much power the interface you're using can output.
      If the headphones you're using are pretty efficient and don't require a lot of power, you're likely not going to gain any benefit in sound other than being able to drive them even louder than before.
      Conversely, if your headphones are really inefficient and require more power than the built-in amplifier in your audio interface can put out, then you will likely not be able to get enough volume out of them, the amplifier may clip during certain sections of songs, or you will not be able to get the full dynamic range from a song or media that makes good use of it. (If your volume is already turned to the max, and you can't go any higher, for example.)
      The SSL2 can sufficiently power most headphones between 16 to 300ohm impedance, so you'll likely not benefit from getting a dedicated amp unless like mentioned earlier, your headphones are extremely inefficient.

    • @enjoshi-godrez8775
      @enjoshi-godrez8775 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@saikousocial they dont have to be "extremely inefficient". That is true for dynamic headphones, which have pretty linear relationships between their impedance and sensitivity, but planars have almost always low impedance, which mean they need more current for the same impedance load to be applied to them. Almost all mid level planars and up benefit from high capacitance amplifiers as apposed to ones with simply more power.
