The Madhyama shruti is also on the basis of the design of Veena (or standard tuning of veena). By shifting to Madhyama shruti we can play from Pa (mantra) to Pa (tara) sthayi in first string itself instead of going to second string.

Sruthi depends on individual voices andi. Once you find your pitch, you can sing almost all songs in that pitch.
