The particle "ni" is used to indicate the place where a thing(s) or a person(s) is(or are) present and to mark one's goal or destination. "De" is used to indicate the place where an action occurs. In short, "ni" casts the sight upon a place, while "de" upon an action. In your example of replacing "de" with "ni", it wouldn't really make sense. But you were close!

These are actually great as a previous-self teaching student. I learnt the language's structure and composition inside and out (at least to a beginner's standard, up to topics like -teiru, -teiku, 'must/must not', conditionals, 'te mo ii', that sort of stuff) but I could never (and still can't) reliably converse in the language since I spent too much time on grammar. These videos are great since they teach beginners actual vocabulary to use, plus the MUCH EASIER -masu form of verbs as opposed to the regular dictionary form of verbs. One thing I would love to see as a non-beginner watching your videos is Kanji for the words/sentences too. I feel like it's easier to understand the meaning of words as you progress into the intermediate territory and start to know what certain Kanji mean, as well as easier to break apart a sentence into its separate parts. But I get that this comment will make no difference now since these videos were made 5 years ago lol

Very useful exercise to form sentences... although its basic. Could use this kind of exercises in your mind as a brain teaser to practice.
11:45 i was so glad i answer before the sensei, i am so happy that i learn something ))
BASIC SENTENCE STRUCTURE
STEP1: identify the type of the word
-time
-place
-verb
-topic =>(~subject.usually comes at the beginning of a sentence)
-object =>(the thing directly affected by the verb)
-companion =>(with someone)]
ex:I[topic] ate[verb] lunch[object] with my friend[companion] at a restaurant[place] on sunday[time]
STEP2: lean the particle combo
-Topic =>は(wa)
-Place =>で(de)
-Time =>に(ni)
-Object =>を(o)
-companion =>と(to)
STEP3: let's assemble the puzzle!
TOPIC は TIME に COMPANION と PLACE で OBJECT を VERB
ex:
I eat lunch with my friend.
わたしは(topic) にちようびに(time) ともだちと(companion) レストランで(place) おちるごはんを(object) たべました(verb).
EXERCISE:
1-
Ken speaks Japanese at home with his family.
けんさん
にほんご
かぞく
はなします
うち
=>
けんさんは(topic) かぞくと(companion) うちで(place) にほんごぞ(object) はなします(verb)
2-
My dad bought beautiful roses on my mom's birthday near the station.
ちち
きれいなバラ
えきのちかく
ははのたんじょうび
かいました
=>
ちちは(topic) ははのたんじょびに(time) えきのしかくで(place) きれいなバラを(object) かいました(verb).
3-
I watched the Guardians of Galaxy with my girlfriend in Times Square at 7:00.
Guardians of Galaxy
わたし
タイムズスクエア
7じ(しちじ)
みました
かのじょ
=>
わたしは(topic)かのじょと(companion)タイムズスクエアで(place)Guardians of Galaxyを(object)みました(verb)
4-
I don't drink coffee at night.
よる
わたし
のみません
コーヒー
=>
わたしは(topic)よるに(time)コーヒーを(object)のみませn(verb).
5-
I want to see cherry blossoms in Kyoto in the Spring
はる
わたし
さくら
きょうと
みたいです
=>
わたしは(topic)はるに(time)きょうとで(place)さくらを(object)みたいです(verb).
----------------------------------
this is the rules for making basic Japanese sentences.
In other types of sentences, you can see particles behave differently.
examples:
1-
Restaurants are(topic) expensive sometimes.
レストエランは、ときどきたかいです
(Normally, Restaurant is a place but here it's the topic of the sentence)
2-
John(particle) knows(verb) many good restaurants(object).
ジョンさんは いい レストランを たくさん しっています
"not bad" awwwwwww she is sooooo cute!
