    Genesis / Duke (1980)
Duke is the tenth studio album by English rock band Genesis, released on 28 March 1980 on Charisma Records. The album followed a period of inactivity for the band in early 1979. Phil Collins moved to Vancouver, Canada, in an effort to salvage his failing first marriage, while Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recorded solo albums. Collins returned to the UK after his marriage ended and wrote a significant amount of material, some of which was used for Duke and some was later reworked for his first solo album, Face Value. Duke contained a mix of individually written songs and tracks that evolved from jam sessions in mid-1979, while recording took place at the end of the year. The break in activity rejuvenated the band, and they found the album an easy one to work on.
Duke was positively received by music critics, who praised the album for bridging the band's progressive rock-oriented past, such as the closing ten-minute "Duke's Travels"/"Duke's End" suite, with their more pop rock-oriented, commercially accessible direction, as displayed on the hit singles "Turn It On Again", "Duchess", and "Misunderstanding". It reached No. 11 in the US, and became their first album to reach No. 1 in the UK. It has since been certified Platinum in both countries.

Music reviewing aside, which you do a great, insightful job with, the sister of this duo is a really beautiful woman, with a keen humor. BTW, I kind of resemble David Gilmour…. wink wink….

Great, thanks! Duke is fantastic. The 'Turn it on Again' "suite" opening on their 2007 tour was mind-boggling. 'Duke's Travels' and 'Duke's End' ... I have no words.

An album, and Genesis period that is so polarising with the pop vs prog crew. And yes they aren't the same band that made Trespass. But no-one is the same person they were with 8 years difference.... So hey.
Duke is a such cracking album. The artwork, the sounds, the songs, the melodies. Superb. Its sharp, punchy, a bit wistful, and full of energy and creativity. And thank goodness they didn't just keep making retreads of (great albums) like The Lamb or Foxtrot...!! How dull would that have been! I've always thought the bands albums/development arc felt quite natural tbh. The sudden hatred for anything that has a singable chorus seems rather music snobbish to me...
Good to see y'all back guys!

Duke to me is an album of 2 very distinct identifies the first is the classic 70s progressive rock that's what they were known for and the second is the poppy and self reflective lyricism that would be Phil Collins solo career a year later and all through the 80s the prog stuff such as duchess, Dukes travels and end, and cul de sac are fantastic and turn it on again is a fun upbeat number and heathaze is almost like an outtake from wind and Wuthering that's the good stuff please don't ask and alone tonight just slow the album down for me however the good stuff here makes this album a genesis classic

Sorry, Duke isn't as great as nearly everything they created prior to Duke. The first time I saw Genesis live was the year before. Good concert. I saw Genesis again on the Duke tour. After the show, on our way to the car, my friend says "That was a great show." And I responded with "It was good, but I'm afraid that's the last time I see Genesis." Duke was the last Genesis show I ever saw. I couldn't waste anymore money on their pop junk when Yes and Rush were doing much better pop music. Tormato and Permanent Waves have better songs than Duke. But Duchess is the one and only great song. A bunch of pretty good songs. And a couple songs I wished they didn't waste concert time on. Turn It On Again, and Misunderstanding.
