    VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Here’s another one of them “Making a Fine Art Photography Print” videos I like to do. But you know what I don’t like? The term “fine art.” Lemme grab my ascot and pipe because I be getting all sorts of pretentious dropping “fine art” to describe my own work. “Oh, this photo I took? Yes, it’s art…FINE art.” Bleh. Yuck. But what am I supposed to do, call it “average art”? You can see the dilemma I’m in here.
Whatever you want to call it, I love making framed prints. It’s the best. I don’t get a chance to do it very often, so when I do get the chance, you bet your ass I’m going to make a video about it. And this one’s extra fantastic because I actually made TWO fine art prints this time. Huh? What? No, can’t be. TWO? That’s more than any one photographer can handle. It’s impossible.
I’m telling the truth, friends…TWO PRINTS. And you know what’s even better? One of them is a pigment print on Hahnemühle photo rag paper while the other is a c-type print on Fuji Crystal Archive Pearl Paper. So we’re going to look at how these bad boys compare. Two different printing technologies, two different papers, one 6x17 negative on Kodak Portra 160 film.
    Let’s dive into it.

SUPER IMPORTANT UPDATE. I lowered the monitors an inch and raised the print an inch and a half. I can now see the whole thing when I'm sitting at my desk. Crisis averted.

I noticed some Polaroids on your desk in this video. I don't know if you'd find this interesting or not Nick but last week, while going through a box of old photos I came across one I'd taken with the original Polaroid SX-70 at their introduction/training event in LA making that photo (I believe) 50 years old this year. Polaroid had set up different subjects to shoot. I picked a bowl of fruit and some beaded jewelry. The fruit image showed colors that are still saturated with brilliant yellows and reds with deep blacks.

I'm old enough (70) to remember when Kornelius started to pin his panorama's to the store's walls. I saw his printing business grow and grow. His shop is still there while dozens of others in OC bit the dust. I think his store must be coming up on it's silver anniversary soon.

I respect so much that you share it this way rather than as advertisement or as a "25 film tips to make you a professional photographer" or in other words... your videos have as much character as your photography does.

    Hey Chris
I love watching your videos on my TV. When you display the print image you should use a 15% gray background instead of white to better see the image.
Even though the white border is not that prominent it can impact the way your eye sees color.
When viewing images, it’s always best to look at them against a neutral gray background.
    Thx Nick.

You just gave us a clinic, Nick. Outstanding... and the French "Je ne sais quoi" aptly descibes that indescribable feeling you captured near video’s end, however briefly it remains. As good as the original video was when you shot the image, this was icing on the cake. Thank you.

I have the same problem with too many photos and a few walls... My plan is to print 4 of my super favorites photos, hang one on the wall, and then when the next season comes, I will take down the print, and store it, put the next print on the wall. Then every season I'll have something different on the wall. (BTW, those 2 photos in this video are my favorites)

Pro tip (framer here): put a D-ring on each side of a wide frame like that and skip the wire. Then put two hooks in the wall, spaced apart the same as the D-rings, and it will never tilt or shift on you. Always perfect! You did a nice job cutting down that frame. I have a V-nailer if you need to borrow it. :)

Interesting point about sense of accomplishment with building physical objects vs digital content. Digital creates can be every bit as demanding to produce as a fabricated object, but there is definitely a distinct feeling of having an end result you can physically hold and give to someone else that digital/virtual content doesn't possess.

Your theatrics are as good as your photos, I totally get that voice , so I print 8x6 and wakem in a visual diary, not all just ones I like :) hey and get onto that book that is the next best thing . Your process is very methodical, so many things influence the final product, I feel like you can get away with more on a small print but when it goes big like that, attention to detail is key , right down to the paper type and photo finish .
