When you look at the many hundreds, if not thousands of historic properties around the world, the only realistic way they'll ever come back into use is on-site renewables generation and storage capacity. Historic houses in particular, were often abandoned simply because it cost too much to provide energy for them; the Chateau is a prime example, even today. People often make the mistake of thinking that you have to go all in on on-site renewables generation & storage capacity instead of taking the affordable in chunks as you go approach. If you design a solar system for example, to be modular, you can add to it as and when you can afford to do so. Take your time in researching your renewables+ storage installations; it can make all the difference.
Solar is brilliant. We power our large farmhouse, charge 3 EVs and run some machines on the farmyard for about 7 months of the year - and we are in sunny Wales 😀. Saves us thousands of pounds each year. Billy - you need to save up and get big panels up in the Convent garden and over at the Chateau.

Billy, think about making the cupboard’s TOP shelf into the battery backups and any electrical consuls shelf, instead of the bottom. Usage of top shelf means no spillage leaking downwards onto battery cables etc. Even better the more accessible shelves are available for ready use items. Also, should you change cupboard doors later, think about installing overhead door/s just for that top (electrical control) shelf; which could be kept closed when the other (kitchen item related) doors are open. @@ThePethericks That's just on the edge of too cold for me, but it's so much better than mid 80's IMPO. I really wish we got more than 6 or 7 days of winter here in Southern GA USA.
@@ThePethericks One thing to look into with solar is serial connections, parrallel connections, and hydrib connections. The solar systems can be really freaking stupid when it comes to getting the juice from the sun. IIRC solar requires a certain amount of (something, I'm coming down with some kind of nasty illness today so the specifics are slipping through my mind.). So if you have lots of clouds you do a serial connection the system is more likely to charge, but you only get 1 panels worth of power. While if you do a parrallel connection for the panels, then you get ALL the panels, but if there is clouds, dust, fog, what ever it might stop the panels from being able to start charging the battery. Then you have the hybrid system which is a serial connection, done in parrallel which is the best of both worlds. (I do not know if ecoflow has that issue, since I've been looking at regular solar solutions, and their inverters are what limits the power into the power grid (whether that be batteries, or the actual grid for the house, convent, mansion thingie.).
to get the best out of solar put a toilet roll tube up right on the glass at noon the aim is to have no shadow which means 90 deg to the sun which is the best you will get out of a panel so putting a couple of blocks on the back legs will improve the output

Fantastic progress gentlemen! For sure, you can't have a kitchen without internet and cctv! Of course, eventually you'll need things like refrigerators, ovens, counters, etc. But those can wait. Sean you are the man, Crack on!
We have PV 7,5 kWp in East-West and a battery 7,5 kWh and we are from March to Oktober 90% autark. It is a great thing and we are lucky to have it now for 5 years. If you take your roof you will have more than enough and with a battery you can get 100% autarky.
@Nicky L No uglier than solar panels on the roof of an historic building - at least as an awning on the back side of the building they will be out of sight from the other side of the court wall...
Your solar panels need to be in full sun across all panels, if part of a panel is shaded it will reduce output significantly. You should also get maximum efficiency from them on a sunny winters day when the air temperature is coldest, as the panels heat up, their output drops. I run a 27KW solar array on the roof of one of my sheds. On the hottest Australian summer day (45 degrees C) the output is only around 16KW from the 20KW inverter, on a sunny winter day I get full 20KW
You should use the top shelves of the cabinet for the ecoflow and such ...nobody can reach those anyway...the lower cabinets would be better for storage that you can reach.
I believe I say this every day so Why not say it again, I love the group of you together. Everyone working on the convent is top notch and I believe committed to restoring the lovely building. Keep up the good work. I hope Rick is ok. xx

I enjoy your videos very much. I thought this project might be of interest to you - Le Monastère des Augustines in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. It is an adapted monastery on a grand scale and the city is both a provincial capitol and a major tourism centre and there might have been some government grants involved, so the market and funding are different, I guess, but there might be some ideas of use to your smaller project. Cheers!
Oh it was good to see Ryan back at the convent! Where will you put the solar panels? I know it would be difficult in UK if the powers that be decided your roof needed to be in keeping with the type of building. A lot of old churches have this problem.
What if you placed solar panels above each 1st floor window in the back. Attached to the dividing ledge separating the wall and the mansard roof, they could double as an awning over the windows during the summer. While they would be very noticeable from the 2nd story windows when looking down I don't think they would be too intrusive otherwise. By placing them between floors you can have easy access for cleaning through the 2nd floor windows.
I wasn't able to finish my concern on the segment of the nite seen lights on in the part of the building that u knew had no power. Upon ascending up the stairs u and Ryan found a upside wooden cross and to many it may not be a big deal but maybe it might not be a bad idea to get the convent blessed on cleaned. U guys are doing such a beautiful job and breathing life back Into this beautiful building it may not hurt. Just concerned and care.
It’s amazing how light it looks in there now. Even with just the insulation and the frame work up. I live in NE of the UK so we never get a great deal of sun and I’m near the coast so we get the wind from the North Sea. You see more Solar panels on roofs nowadays but I wonder how long it would be before you get free heating once you’ve payed for the panels and installation.
This really is exciting. Seeing all the steps come together. Won't be to long before it's all up and cracking !!!!! (By the way I like my steak medium rare.)
So for the wood worm problem .My father was an excellent carpenter and he would mix wood glue with the cutting dust or the sawdust from the wood he was working and fill the holes with that and after sanding it was totally unnoticable . Maybe try that instead of painting the cabinet ?
Right back at it this morning 🌄 good day Sean convent is so beautiful billy what an amazing transformation I no your not finished but love this building waiting for you to do that upstairs stir up all those Spirits wooo hooo crack on .. . Lol
Just something to think about. Put your solar power someplace easy to access so you can sweep snow or ice off in winter. Putting the panels on the roof is not the most efficient place to put them if you get snow storms that will block charging your batteries. Keep them in the back garden, perhaps with another row of panels, and you can build an attractive framing that will look nice for the property.
My solar panel are patio covers. I’ve got a few on the roof but I hated the look all over roof. And one part of my yard just needed something to keep the crazy bright setting Texas sun all year from blinding me. One of the best things I ever did was use the panels to keep the sun out of my eyes.
Great idea for solar panels, although we were dismayed to find that at the end of their life they go to landfill. We live in Southern Portugal (not the Algarve) on a farm and spent €40,000 on solar panels and batteries. We still have a connection to EDP (for which they charge €14 a month) but rarely use the grid. Well worth it, as electricity is on the up and up. Love your videos - keep them coming!
Solar panels is just a good idea. Just remember, they are really sensitive to a lot. How high on the sky the sun is affects the amount of light that is "stolen" by the atmosphere. So both the time of day as well as the time of year will change the conditions. How cloudy the sky is, even the thinnest cloud will lower the amount of light. What I mean is, do not expect them to deliver the max effect except when everything is perfect, and it rarely is. But other than that, it is the way to go!
On the wall where are you framed around that cupboard; you might try removing the face frame of that cupboard and moving it out to the surface of the framed wall.
Wehave solarpaneles on our roof and it works very well. But living so upp north it works, during the winter, We do not have a lot of sunny days. I beleive that you would have nearly sun all year long. 😅

What a great team! You all got a lot done today and had fun along the way! This whole project has been so fun and satisfying to watch!
Everything seems to be going smoothly, but I just can’t keep from looking at the amazing floor. Wow, what a difference.
Hugs from NY. I sent out my letter for the time capsule
Maybe you can put solar panels roof tiles on the convent! It looks authentic bit makes you a lot of energy!
So for the wood worm problem .My father was an excellent carpenter and he would mix wood glue with the cutting dust or the sawdust from the wood he was working and fill the holes with that and after sanding it was totally unnoticable .
Maybe try that instead of painting the cabinet ?
Right back at it this morning 🌄 good day Sean convent is so beautiful billy what an amazing transformation I no your not finished but love this building waiting for you to do that upstairs stir up all those Spirits wooo hooo crack on .. . Lol
The kitchen is coming along nicely and soon you'll have heat in there powered by the sun. Not bad!
Thanks for sharing your day. 😀
Can you build the cabinet front out to the level of the studs and then install the doors on that?
Laying cable through that place must be a nightmare. I think we need a Duncan Cam. 🧡
It’s snowing even in Southern California! ❤
How about two large lanterns on either side of the main door. Getting lighting that looks like candles would be right for the age of the Convent.
The walls are amazing with the tall timbers
Great idea for solar panels, although we were dismayed to find that at the end of their life they go to landfill. We live in Southern Portugal (not the Algarve) on a farm and spent €40,000 on solar panels and batteries. We still have a connection to EDP (for which they charge €14 a month) but rarely use the grid. Well worth it, as electricity is on the up and up. Love your videos - keep them coming!
watching Sean up on the scaffolding keeping an eye on Billy assembling the Solar panels gives me a chuckle. "What are you thinking Sean?"
