I absolutely love the game i think the haters must be huffing paint or something. There just aren't many good 2d platforming Arpg's out there so I'm glad this exists.
I really like the game, it’s really tough of course but it’s still very fun and extremely beautiful, my only two complaints are some bosses rely on very tiny windows or gimics, making them quite frustrating, and the second is it can crash quite often (I play it on switch lite), sometimes erasing some progress
my problem with this game is that it has a lot of elements that other indie metroidvanias already did, but better. Progression is really slow at the start, extra item pickups go to waste, and the ledge grab mechanic is clunky when it's crucial. I find the boss battles fun, though (except the 2nd scorpion). If it had a boss rush mode I'd definitely play it repetitively like how much I play megaman 2,3 and X4. As it is I'd probably move on to other metroidvania backlogs after I beat the final boss. It's an OK metroidvania with a pretty presentation. I totally understand the mixed reviews, and I got it on summer sale so it's still a pretty reasonable purchase for me.
It’s a great game, I really love it, but it’s poorly balanced and not enough polished. It also has annoying save system that needs to be changed. I’m sure they’ll fix all of this, but until then I won’t continue playing it.
You can switch out weapons on the fly, I was switching between a sword and a knife that had bleed dmg bonus. Only problem was when I logged back in and loaded my save all the extra weapons I'd found were gone and the next hour I played I couldn't find anymore just coins and potions in the chests that I'd found. But I'v only played a few hours.
Bhought it yesterday, having tons of fun, have only had 1 bug which did require me to close the game and open it again. Overall I don't really see the issues with the game, although I am playing on the patched version of course. I've been having tons of fun and will probably leave a positive steam review once I feel I've played enough, I don't think it deserves a mixed.
My biggest issue is that the game is designed to give you unnecessary disadvantages and you're forced to play with them The rolls are on a cooldown that are about a second or so apart which is bad when the range and speed of enemy attacks is significantly greater than Yours Archers have limited range so the arrows you shoot are guaranteed to miss after like 2-3 inches of travel and in order to improve this you need to unlock it via skill points which you won't have access to until 20 levels into the game Mages are partially ranged characters and get a homing attack but you have to be in like melee range to have your spell even activate and its extremely weak and their heavy attack has the most range and power but has like a 5 second cool down on it The scout class maybe the most viable as it has more health and you're supposed to get close to attack anyway but your combo won't do overwhelming damage so you will have to block and evade as 2-4 hits are enoigh to kill you which is fine if the dodge didnt have a 1 second cooldown or if the block ability wasn't broken after 2 hits and unusable until the stamina regenerates which takes like 3 seconds All these things can be remedied if you get enough levels to buy the necessary skills with skill points but there is no effective way to grind as enemies only respawn when you save like bonfires in dark souls they are far from each other so you can't really make an efficient route early in the game and they give bad to very low exp and are a pain to kill. There is a certain grind you can do in the sewers but the enemies there can kill your low level character in 2 shots and they take like 6 hits to kill I've played darksouls bloodborne elden ring sekiro and atleast they give you like infinite parries and a good amount of continuous rolls so you can use skill to beat your opponents, its challenging but gives you the tools to develop a good attack method to win this game just puts limitations on you and gives all the advantages to the enemies. You can say I'm not hard core enough but whether I am or not doesn't change the fact all these restraints makes the game not fun to play in alot of the start of the game and its very off putting
Ehh define "unnecessary" in the context of disadvantages? All those games you played have "unnecessarily" long animation commitment which this game (with few exceptions) do not have. I played thru the game on warrior with archer without grinding and imo it was fine. So if lack of efficient way to grind is bugging you, just don't. You barely gain power except on a few key levels anyways. There were a few places of frustration like first archer, pyramid, and summoner bounties, but overall enemies all have very clear patterns to exploit. Re: dodges. You aren't suppose to be able to everything; just dodge attacks by actually avoiding them. Re: lack of range. I guess you also aren't suppose to kill everything before they reach you (although archer does eventually. Imo it scales way too hard to the point early game was arguably harder than late game outside of bosses). Being able to attack just out of melee range is still very useful.
I got it on PS4 today and got a couple of hours this evening. The highlight of the game is the animation which is gorgeous. Sadly you can't appreciate this as well until you reach the citadel. The start spider cave feels way too long and tedious to traverse. My biggest complains are divided into 3 major issues. - Sloppy coding. Loading new areas shouldn't take that long, reloading after dying shouldn't take that long. Sometimes the game freeze like there is a bug for no apparent reason. Happened in a battle sequence in the spider cave where a spider comes out of a wall. - Lack of quality of life details makes it unpolished. A) Touching the Dragon Sword Checkpoint should immediately heal you, instead, you need to Save the game (which takes a while loading) for getting your health. B) Menu section for looking at Characters and Bestiary have pretty long lists. There should be an R1/L1 scroll to go over the list much faster. (the Game Devs put the lovely effort on putting yummy lore on enemies/characters, plus enemy item drops, HP and Exp info) please make it accessible for players to enjoy it). C) You can't Zoom In or Out when looking at the Map, and then Fast traveling the snapshot of where you're going is so zoomed in you can't really tell where you're fast traveling to, unless you check first. Seems silly, but when maps gets big, many things look the same. - Combat issues (as Soldier): Parry/Counterattack is not fun, parrying should feel rewarding but the attack after parry doesn't do significant much damage than regular attacks, they don't stagger enemies and consume your stamina, meaning you leave yourself vulnerable afterwards and take risk to parry in the first place for very little reward. *insert Dark Souls Player very sad face :( Rolling cooldown is way too long. Controls are Wonky sometimes, player accidentally crouching or grabbing ledge when jumping, or when trying to fall down. Overall, all the observations above come from a deep desire for the issues to be improved because the game have many beautiful positives. I want the game to raise to its potential, it's almost there. I'm cheering for the game developers, good job on all the great work so far! From what I've seen on Twitter, they are responsive to feedback. I just hope they take their time implementing fixes, instead of rushing solutions that might be patchworks that don't address the real problem. For example, rather than increase character damage or lower enemy HP to address difficulty, improve character secondary weapons, improve roll reset time, counterattack stagger enemy, etc.
I got the game on my Switch and am loving it. I haven't been having and issues. This is a great metroidvania I expect to put a lot of hours into Souldiers.
Really? I'm playing on the switch too and in the pyramid I had a lot of crashes and currently i can't progress the sunken laboratory, there is a scene where an npc needs to activate a switch and I will get stuck in the cutscene.
Playing on Switch. Really slow loading times. Dying is very punishing because of this. I would love to play it in the hardest difficulty but would probably spend more time loading than playing. Maybe I got spoiled after playing Celeste where loading times are tiny and you really feel like exploring and trying dangerous things.
The wall jumping on keyboard is so AWFUL. There is a rising lava part towards the end of the game, and due to how jank the controls are it is legit unplayable. When you grab onto edges you instantly magnetize to the surface, but with wall jumps, half the time it just won't grab onto the walls and you plummet..... AND IT GETS WORSE The load times in this game actually make me want to jump off a bridge. Whenever you die, instead of just instantly restarting and placing you at the last checkpoint, it reloads the whole damn zone you were in. Meaning when you deal with janky wall jumping, and die to the 1-kill lava, you have to sit for up to 45 seconds PER DEATH just to try the overly long rising lava section THAT HAS 0 CHECKPOINTS.... I was having so much fun with this game, only for them to just ruin it right as I was about to leave with a smile. Don't buy this game unless you are good at speedrunning
I bought the game yesterday and read the reviews before i played it and was reading reviews, decided to try it anyways, went on warrior difficulty but really its not that hard so far. From the reviews i just have to think people just suck. I wish i could use my mouse to play tho. But i cant wait for their update to fix alot of things
Thanks for the review I been playing this game since day one I been love it I don't understand the why it's so mix review I guess they want a easy game I been playing the game one the ps5 and it's been bug free the game its hard but it's very rewarding after u over comes the challenge the game its gorgeous and the developer put alot love in the game and alot ppl don't appreciate this game my opinion it's a 10 out of 10 in my
Why the mixed reviews? I can't believe ANYONE likes this game. Well, everything about it is great, EXCEPT the TERRIBLE character control. The janky stickiness of the character while jumping and platforming is ATROCIOUS. I suppose if you can get past that, the game can be GREAT. WTF is with the character jumping when you don't even press jump and NOT jumping when you do? Doubly jump works when it wants to? I seriously came within inches of obliterating my controller raging from how terrible the character control is in this game. That's my personal only complaint. But it's a big one because it makes the game nearly unplayable when having to do precision platforming and the character seems to do whatever TF it wants.

Mages are partially ranged characters and get a homing attack but you have to be in like melee range to have your spell even activate and its extremely weak and their heavy attack has the most range and power but has like a 5 second cool down on it
The scout class maybe the most viable as it has more health and you're supposed to get close to attack anyway but your combo won't do overwhelming damage so you will have to block and evade as 2-4 hits are enoigh to kill you which is fine if the dodge didnt have a 1 second cooldown or if the block ability wasn't broken after 2 hits and unusable until the stamina regenerates which takes like 3 seconds

Sounds like extremely good game design to me.
a patch got released yesterday which fixed a lot of the problems and now its very fun, cant stop playing

Bro if you think the Spider cave is bad wait till you get to the Pyramid level.
Most of your issues have been patched, at least on the PC version. The console update might take a bit longer to come out though.
