When I was a little girl back in the the early 60's, my Portuguese grandma would take me and my siblings out periwinkle hunting in the Bodega and Bolinas areas. We'd each have a bucket and see who could gather the most. They were never wasted. Everyone loved them except me. She'd boil them, let them sit for a few hours and then she'd give everyone a safety pin to dig out the meat. She'd melt butter in a pan and give everyone their own little serving bowl of warm butter. She'd serve this alongside some warm polenta mixed with chopped kale flakes. She sure knew comfort food. Thank you for your video and bringing back some wonderful childhood memories.

I see so many people from other countries here, so allow me to join in from the Netherlands! When I went to the beach in the south-west of the Netherlands, with my friends, their mum would drive us and catch a bunch of periwinkles for us. It is an acquired taste for sure, and thankfully she did all the hard work of taking out all the little buggers for us kids - letting kids mess around with needles or sharp forks isn't the handiest. Fond memories of the beachtrips, fond memories of eating these little things with some chips/fries! :)

Next time instead of boiling them or steaming them, try flash frying them in wok preferably, or thin pan large pan will do.
A hand full of spring onion (cut into thin narrow strips)
A half hand of Ginger (as above)
A thumbfull of your preffered hot spice
    A pinch of garlic salt
Add periwinkles and flash fry 5 mins tops...
You will find that you will be sucking on those shells because of the favour...real nice.
P.s If you break off the coned end of the periwinkle before cooking them with some pliers, you won´t need a toothpick as it create´s a suction and you just do as stated above with style.

The perriwinkles around here go through cycles. Some years it's profitable enough to pick wrinkles stead of digging clams. We see a few years of slow growth an not much movement around the beach. Then a few years of crawling around exploding in numbers and size. Right now they are doing their thing. I saw a massive herd of them on the beach today. Your pot would be filled in a litteral minute. Ashamed I didn't get a video of them. I have videos from a couple years back of the same beach. The clams were at peak of their cycle an perriwinkles were scarce.
