I believe that they use incremental encoders with push buttons, can you confirm it? To confirm unplug the wheel, rotate to a different position and plug it again, if it didn't recognize the new position after being unplug it's because it's not an absolute encoder. And if it's not an absolute encoder, do they use the eeprom to save the position? To confirm unplug and plug the wheel, if it doesn't reset the position then it's saving the position in the eeprom.
