I just learned about them this past spring i noticed they high in price but wentbon abtrip to a master gardener in jackdon Tennessee and bought 25 of them im so in love with them all ! Hey i got them for a steal 5.00 a peice and wished i had bought them all!
One of my son's shares my love of Hellebores. He usually gifts me one for any gift occasion.

I don't know why more nurseries don't have these in the cold months. They are hard to find in Zone 6a but some special nurseries are starting to carry them now. I also learned that Trader Joe's sells them around Christmas and I picked some up this year. They only carried one color - the Christmas rose white "Hellebores niger." But they were a great price!
Helleborus Niger is a slightly different species to the oriental hellebores. It flowers earlier, with bright white flowers that face upwards on short stems (instead of nodding on taller stems like oriental hellebores). It is supposed to be harder to grow, and needs better drainage than the oriental hybrids. I prefer it though because I love the cheerful white blooms in midwinter.

My hellebore “farm” got fried from the freeze, but all of the plants are flowering. I’ve got to convince people to come adopt some!

The tiny ones I planted in summer from a local gardening friend had their protective leaf mulch blown off during that December 23-25 cold, but they actually still look amazing! I think b/c they're in a perpetually damp spot that has some windbreak protection.
Boy howdies, mine got fried from the freeze. I've never seen mine get burned as bad before here in N. Georgia. My Jacob's white bloomed very early & is rather flat now. There does seem to be green under the mess. All were established plants.
The wind was just a different beast. The temps were definitely not an issue, just the way it got cold
Same here in Dallas. I have 3 of them and one of them had already started putting up blooms. That one got totally fried but the other two planted right by it didn't notice the cold at all.
I bought my first hellebore plant last fall. It is just a small starter so it isn't pretty like yours yet. I plan to buy more. I can't wait to see a bloom. Don't think it will be this year though.
Help!!! I'm crazy about Helebores and don't have enough garden space! It's a gardener's nightmare!

Hellebores are one of my favorite perennials. The polar vortex just before Christmas turned the foliage on mine black so I cut it back last week, about 3-4 weeks earlier than I usually do in my zone 6b garden. Just like yours, the flower buds were up a little earlier than “normal”. I would love to find hellebores in a six pack!!!
a six pack would be fantastic, never seen that. I have only seen quart and gallon sizes. Prices in NY can be close to $30 for the new varieties in a gallon container
Me too! I've dig up some volunteer seedlings found near the parents & potted them up. Hope they make it.

Thank you for the information on hellebores. They are so beautiful-have two planted in garden that I bought last year; anxious to see if they will bloom. Bought one in November, and it is blooming like crazy and planted in a pot for now. We are going to have high twenty temps for the next 2 nights here; wouldn’t pruning damage them?
I've noticed the newer hellebore's listed not to be so cold hardy. Like the old fashioned hellebores were always 3-9 now on the new ones I see 4-8 and 5-9 or 4-9 the hybridizing has shrunk the range a bit
I was cutting back old leaves today and nearly cut off a bud!
I’m in zone 7a, New York, and some of my cultivars are large clumps of pretty healthy green leaves that mound up and cover the center of the plant. I’m confused about when it would be the best time to cut the leaves down to expose the buds coloring up in the center?
I have a huge stand of hellebore foetidus that are solid black from the Christmas flash freeze. I don’t know what to do with them. Never had a problem with them. Zone 7a NW TN
They'll come back out of it. They will survive after humans are gone🤣
I'm in zone 6, southeast Missouri. I've been checking my hellebores! They're putting on buds but I'm making myself not cut the protective foliage off even though they'd look better. Winter is far from over here. And are a lot of the newer varieties sterile? I'd rather have them reseed as they're fairly costly to plant a bunch. Sadly I've never seen them in six packs around here.
Most of the new ones are likely sterile. That could be good or bad just depending on the type of gardener you are. I've seen them out of control many times
@@JimPutnam As slow as the little seedlings of mine are growing it'll take awhile for mine to get overgrown! I can see why they're more expensive to buy!
I planted 6 plugs in the fall and as soon as it froze a rabbit ate a bunch of the leaves! Now I cover them every night and they seem to be pushing new growth (I’m in Z6a). Do you think it will be a year or two before they bloom? I’m so excited for them it will be hard to wait!

Hi Jim. Your hellebores look amazing. Mine not too much. All three containers looks very sad. Even the new growth turned brown. I’m guessing it got burnt by the Arctic cold we had in December. Do I just leave it alone & see what it does? I’m very sad.
Yes, I would leave it alone and let it recover. As I replied to someone else, I watched a video recently that said the old foliage, even if it looks bad, acts as a "sweater" to protect the plant while it's still cold outside. They said not to trim it back until the risk of frost has passed.
How early can I trim off old leaves?
The tree leaves won't cause root rot during winter? (from the leaves getting soaked from rain and snow) I thought I had to clean all that out from under them. Zone 7, NJ
where can I buy the ones that flower upright??? I bought one because of the picture, but was disappointed that it droops so far down and the flower is basically not able to be seen.

What fertilizer would you recommend?
My mahonia has darkened foliage in many places following the freeze near Christmas. Should I just wait awhile to assess before cutting it back? Zone 7B/8A near Charlotte.
I'm waiting to cut those kinda things back for a few more weeks
My Mahonia is burnt and black too 😞 normally one of my prettiest plants right now. I went past it yesterday and just touching it knocked a bunch off. That quick hard freeze was awful!

Thanks for another informative video. I’m such a huge fan of hellebores. I have several planted on an inclined area in my backyard (which makes the blooms much more visible). I’ve found them to be the hardiest perennial in my zone 7a dry shade beds.
So much of our gardens in Tennessee look abysmal but the perennial promise a brighter future 🌱 I had minimized the value of perennials in my mind in favor of shrubs but let me tell you, seeing new green growth at soil level is good for the soul.
For sure...my East TN garden looks dead yet my Hellebore and 🌷 I have in poys are popping up
Great video. I have my hellebores planted under a Kousa dogwood on a slope. The first year I had to water frequently. Now in their third year, they are doing great! So glad for these maintenance and pruning tips. Thank you for all the great information on your channel.

Thanks for this great information! I’m loving my first hellebore so far! It’s currently in a medium/large container in a semi-sheltered part of my yard, zone 6. Are they pretty hardy or would you suggest planting in the ground before winter?

Thank you, Jim. I almost gave up growing these in Florida Zone 9 a, but last January mine FINALLY a must have taken hold enough and bloomed. So I needed this care video! It took mine 3 years to bloom - do they usually take a while to settle in and bloom?
The veins on the old growth at 5:20 look so cool. I'm sure mine will get there with another year or two. While we don't always have to cut the old growth in winter out here in Oklahoma due to cold wind, last year you gave a good tip that you leave the old growth on young plants as they don't have as much energy yet.

I think it's ok not to prune them. I have one in a clay pot and never pruned it. I like the look of the foliage too! I watched a video recently that said it's good to keep the foliage on - especially in colder climates because it acts as a "sweater" for the plant - protecting it from cold snaps that we sometimes get even in March - at least in Zone 6a.

Yeah, it isn't necessary. Just more cosmetic than anything else. I would leave it the first year

How timely!!
I'm in 6b in WV and I had one in a large container. During the really cold spell it turned black and the blooms froze. I cut it back, I sure hope it comes back!
You'll probably still get some flowers or at least a reset of foliage

Extremely disheartening when I go out and see Silver berries Eleagnus and other extremely tough plants that have significant damage done… Definitely going to make me rethink before replanting. Deer have NEVER eaten any part of my hellebores. Nodding heads are not a problem (ever, in my opinion) if you site them up a hillside. My current favorite of the non-nodding😉 variety is Shooting Star. I tried growing a hellebore once, it died. Because of the cost I haven’t wanted to try one again. Well silly me bought one last fall, it had come down in price, and I forgot to plant it. It still looks alright so maybe it will fine until spring. It’s in a small container though so I was able to dig some dirt back and put the container and all in a planter right next to the house. So I have my fingers crossed 🤞🏻 it makes it. Dummy! ❄️💚🙃

I like to buy mine small if I can find them. Planting large root-balls between tree roots is a bear. Here in the Pacific Northwest, 8b, they do well. I like them even after blooming.
I've had orientalis colonize and would like to divide them. I live in Charlotte, Zone 7b. Would like your opinion on when I can do it. Thanks
Mine took a beating during the recent extreme cold snap (I Live in Brevard, NC). I did cover them when we had temps at zero. Im hoping they come back. Thanks for the video.

I inherited a hellebore in my garden from previous homeowners. It has clearly been there for quite a while.... it is just so big and dense with just hundreds of stems. I'm thinking I might want to divide it, but have heard it will be hard on the plant. Any tips?
Look for seedlings around it. Many older ones scatter seed.

Wondering if you can divide a Hellebore. No sign of new flowers here in zone 9, N. California. Finally much needed rainfall, 16 inches in 3 weeks. That means I can garden again in 2023.
They don't divide as well as other things. They do frequently seed themselves and those can be transplanted
