I think curse and pain split is way better than wood hammer. I play curse and pain split and its really good especially in solo queue. Always 70-90k damage and 100k+ tank
Only problem is that you go from having unstoppable hard CC, to having no hard CC at all outside of ult
You have to play completely differently and are now extremely reliant on your teammates to finish off people (outside of solo pickoffs).
At least wood hammer gives you that good burst of CC and dmg that lets you be impactful in team fights, curse just makes it so enemies can just dive ur backline without you being able to pull them off at all.
Are u* trying any other games too?
That absol got away with so many 1hp escapes
Trev in fury mode is crazy with wood hammer and horn leech

What matchups would pain split be preferred into? I'm not sure what to use it against.

Mew is on a really bad state right now. Even Chris doesn't like to play it outside fury mode because the mon got nerfed a lot to the point the damage it does is extremely low, even on the auto boost attack.
Basically he said and quote "It's so bad to play on solo Q because look at that damage, you cannot even farm, so unless is your favourite Mon I don't recommend it".
He did a video on it last week I believe so check it out if you wanna see how it went

What battle item do you recommend the most? Escape button? Potion?
Get a life man, get a life. How down bad a person can be having 9k games on a single mon, what about other mons
