Woahhh there...Superman.....breaking steel with his bare hands!!!!! Thanks for the lesson on splitting tough pieces....I really like the voice over!!!! Very nice pieces today....LOL
I ran a splitter for the first time last weekend. learned alot of little tricks watching all your videos. Definitely faster than the splitting axe. Good night Irene
Got to split some campfire wood yesterday. Some old trees that were so weathered they looked like driftwood. Burned ok for my neighbor's fire pit. See ya tomorrow.
Hey Chris, the rounds that look like a face, you could cut those down and make them thinner and make clock faces out of the. Use the wood coating to protect them when done . Just an idea. Great job splitting.
Heh Chris isn’t it about time you gave the splitter a rest, and did some stacking. Those piles look like they need to start drying out. 😀😀 keep safe and well GNI
Put a little bar oil on the finger tips to make the material more malleable to prevent tears when you're handling wood. threaded rod is very soft. My first bucking measure tool broke just from bumping into wood.
Chris have you ever considered buying the Eastern made 511 with the pull back arm. That splitter seams like it would get more work done in less time. It’s hard to believe how much work you do on your wood lot. Great channel
As a former machinist a shoulder is needed at the end of the thread so that there is more contact at the junction. you may forward this idea to Chris at Easton if he uses the idea I will talk to him . A spring to allow the handle to have flex would also work.
I think the valve manufacturer is the one to talk to and the owner at Eastonmade is Andrew, Chris is at Wolf ridge, I used to mix it up too, they both make great stuff!
I learned the hard way when it comes to splitting uneven cut ends! My kinetic splitter really launches those pieces lol. I think I got into my first bunch of friggen Elm, one piece took me about 10 hits to get it split and it was still clinging to life, I finally just got a small hatchet and cut through all the strings.
A higher grade steel sounds great. Keep us posted on the new gloves. I'm sure Kenny is out wrestling a bear or an alligator or something but maybe you guys could take a trip to your dad's and all of you sit by the fire with him and his dog and a nice cup of whiskey to sip on. Just a thought
Have you checked the bolts lately under the push plate. They seem to be an issue with those splitters too. American made grade 8 will fix that Canadian made handle right.
HAY CHRIS YA NEVER SAID IF YA LIKED THE GLOVES... GOOD LESSON, I ALWAYS LEARN NEW STUFF WATCHIN YOU GUY'S... PLUS GET THE RUNDOWN ON ALL THE EQUIPMENT... NOTHIN BETTER THAN LEARNIN ALL THE DO'S AN DON'T'S, SO WHEN I GET STARTED I'LL DO, MORE THAN, DON'T... MY WIFE AND I HAVE A CABIN IN A SMALL TOWN IN CHIHUAHUA I'M HOPIN TO BE GOIN FULL TIME THIS YEAR... STAY COOL CHRIS... PEACE... P.S. I STILL WOULDNT MIND AQUIRIN SOME BEVER DENTURES, I THINK THEY'D LOOK WICKED COOL STICKIN IN LOG AT THE CABIN... I'LL TELL FOLKS I BASHED BIGFOOT IN THE TEETH OR SOMETHIN...
I would recommend the same bolt, not a hardened one. And have some spares. Better a broken handle than a broken valve. Kinda like a shear pin. With that strength... you might just tear off the whole top of the splitter! :)
Good morning Chris! You should contact Eastonmade I’m sure they would send you a spare lever. Looks like you have some stacking in the near future. Have a good one👍🏻👍🏻 GNI
Ya, I could but it would take longer than I want to wait which is never so I just fixed it, you will see it tomorrow! I am going to have another good one, you do the same!
Good morning Chris!!😀😀 That maple must have been pretty fast growing stuff because of how stringy it is. It seems that the tighter the grain is the less stringy it is when you split it. You could have reused the handle you have by just taking out the broken piece and spun the nut up the bolt and rethreaded it in again. It would be a little shorter but it would probably be stronger. Take care my friend!!😀😀 Logger Al
I must be cheap I would just remove the broken part in the splitter and put the handle back in. If the wood is going to be in heaps for a long time would splitting it onto a pallet help it dry?
That ids exactly what I ended up doing! I tried pallets under the pile a few times and it worked okay, but all the debris with it made it hard to stack later.
How long have you had the ultra? Have you thought about getting one of Andrew’s bigger splitters like the 12-28? Or maybe the big dog 22-28 and load that arm up with rounds and use the 6-8-12 way wedge?
Hi Chris - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I thought the bigger Eastonmade splitters have slower cycle speeds, which I imagine you would find frustrating. Also, they get considerably heavier so you would have to get that tractor that I don't want you to buy to enable you manoeuvre it about. Is it an option to get a hydraulic expert to fit an auto return onto the Ultra.
@@rodneysweetnam8653 I do believe u can ask for that option to be installed on the ultra. But they big ones like the 12-22, 22-28 24D, and even the 37D have like 4-6 cycle time so they aren’t that slow.
It needs a damper on the handle. I don't think it breaking is solely you're pulling on it. The bounce when you retract and it pops off the detent is accelerating the fatigue. It's probably not to good on the valve/spool to chatter like that either.
Yes, it is called a wedge and yes there are different kinds, a single blade, 4 way, 6 way 8 way and even more. Yes, they can be changed on most commercial splitters.
If that whole area pivots, you should make a sleeve that goes over it and ties into the handle. That way you won't be so likely to shear off the bolt so quickly, even if it is a better grade of steel. That or stop the tool like it should be used and make it a show pony. LOL
Since bolts aren’t designed for shear strength you’ll probably keep snapping them, especially at that length. I agree with Joel on the sleeve idea, or you could machine up some round stock and thread it. Great tips on splitting! Like you said, we all learn those after about 5cords but it would be nice to have known them earlier! 😀
Good morning Cris I do like to split from the top of the tree down. when you have any kind of crotch I like to have the crotch vertical I have an Eastonmade 12-22 it’s a great machine as well.
Ok Chris you are a machine. 50 plus and just giving it your all every day. Did you ever split by hand? That brute strength of yours is what you get from setting hundreds of beaver traps. LOL 🤣
You would be surprised. I am very average at most things. 5'10" 180 lbs and slow physically and mentally. I just keep moving until I'm done or out of daylight. I love to split with my x27 Fiskars!
I broke the lever on my splitter twice, I found that I didn’t need the full length of the lever, so with it shortened there’s less leverage on the threaded portion and I’ve never broken it again. It’ll likely break tomorrow now that I’ve said that
It does get some constant use for sure! I fixed it already, you'll see it tomorrow. Today I am going to finish the pile we where stacking on the other day!

Hey Chris. Just heard about the loss of your Mother on an episode. We are so sorry and send our condolences.
Thanks so much Anthony!
My condolences chris I’m a few episodes behind. Sorry to hear of your lose.
Not sure why I watch and enjoy your videos, but I do.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching Phil!
Was a good video to show how to split problem wood. Keep up the good work. Peace
Thanks William!

Excellent splitting tutorial, Prof. Chris 😊.

Got to split some campfire wood yesterday. Some old trees that were so weathered they looked like driftwood. Burned ok for my neighbor's fire pit. See ya tomorrow.
Sounds great, old wood burns just like newer wood as long as it is dry!
I can't handle the suspense till tomorrow I think I'll go out back and chuck some wood.
I will fix it tomorrow!
Great points chris.....Gesundheit!!!
Thanks Andrew, I'm just a guy that likes to split a lot!

Would over sleeving the threaded rod with a pipe and then tack welding the bottom stop nut onto the bolt solve your shearing stress failures?
