Another character that should be brought back is probably Jacqui Briggs, Jax's daughter, makes sense since they brought Takeda (Kenshi's son) back in this game as well.

I don't wanna spoil it but it's two new characters in the game in they are the big bads kinda sub bosses Female and Male they are gods and mad Lui Kang is messing with the realms
I wouldn't be surprised they would want to run Liu Kangs fade in the netherrealm streets . All because he doesn't consult the elder gods at the HOA meeting.

But anyway if that's how these new sub bosses feel then they should have gotten off their fat asses and dealt with Cetrion , Geras and Shang Tsung Kronika and stopped them before they got too outta hand with their shenanigans. But Liu Kang swept in and saved the day and now they're feeling some type of way.
I think Kai, aka black Liu Kang may be in the game because it looks like him in the back walking with the fighters as Johnny video recording on his phone. It makes sense in a way because he is one of Earth's defenders, a friend of Liu Kang and correct me if im wrong, was he part of the White Lotus Society as well
