    Asafa Powell had the perfect body mechanics for sprinting. His form is flawless from start to finish. The field that he obliterated in this video included the silver and bronze medallists from the olympic final run only a few weeks before this race. If only he had the mental game to go along with this, he might have placed well in the bigger meets. Bolt would still have his number regardless, but by a smaller margin.

    • @charlesthorndike2702

      I'd say Powell would have beaten Maurice Greene's WR of 6.39 in the 60m, if he had focused more on the 60m earlier in his career. He ran a 6.44 twice on the same day both in the heats and semi-final, and slowing down while doing so. And that was in 2016 when he was 33 years old, and far past his prime.

      "Perfect body mechanics", weak mind. He needed to see a sports psychologist, who would have got him over the tension he felt when running on the biggest stage (World Championships and Olympic Games). Many sportsmen/women have done it. Powell did not and paid the price - no more than a Bronze in individual 100m at the World Championships, and zero individual medals at the Olympic Games. Wasted talent.

    Being tall, muscular and still manage to pull such starts, clean quick acceleration and overall just wonderful running technique is not common at all.
    It's no secret that Powell's worst enemy was his mental status right before the race.

    +Jonny Woodburn If you look closely at the side profile towards the end of the race, it looks like powell relaxes. Am I the only one that sees this?

    • @swishman7175
      @swishman7175 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      anthony clarke Jonny Woodburn In the side replay you can see it too. That could have been a 9.67-65. Do you believe that he could be at this level now? Will he run again in the low 9.7's?

    • @anthonyclarke2253
      @anthonyclarke2253 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jonny Woodburn I thought about that at the beginning of the season. It hasn't seemed to bother him thus far. Maybe he's like Blake, as coach mills said he running scared. I wouldn't use the word scared in Powell's case. Tentative or apprehensive would be more appropriate.
      On numerous occasions Powell has admitted he should be running faster and has attributed his shortcomings to not being able to overcome the pressure to win. He's not mentioned the chronic groin pain but that could play a part as well.

    • @anthonyclarke2253
      @anthonyclarke2253 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know Jonny. While Gatlin's start is very quick, I'm inclined to say that Powell would have given up no ground from the start. This was when Powell would launch out of the blocks with ease and breeze past everybody by the 20m mark.

    • @Shirosaki_Ichigo
      @Shirosaki_Ichigo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +anthony clarke This race compared to yohan blake's 9.69, blake seems to ease up only at the 5-10m mark, probably has more speed endurance being a 200m sprinter. Here, powell relaxes at 60m, the bulk of his power was from the start to 60m and once he was ahead he eased up. If he had run all the way, I believe he could have shaved 0.2s even

    • @anthonyclarke2253
      @anthonyclarke2253 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      vladmir put Preaching to the choir my friend. It's an unspoken fact that Powell is a sub 9.7 sprinter. He has shown time and time again that he has the ability. The only reason we've not seen it is because he's either injured, cracks under pressure or when he does go full blast he shuts down 10m before the line so we are left thinking 'what if'.

    While he has always been criticized for not keeping up with his best times in Olympics, once should also realise that it's all about the day, weather, the body response, etc. The margin at the highest level is so small that minor downside on the day can make one slide down to 5th position and on a good day, give a world record performance. Same happened with Lyles in 200m
