You guys are about to be lucky. That construction at Tokyo station is for the "regional connector". Basically, the southern part of the gold line you would have taken is gonna become part of the Expo line, that will go through downtown and connect with the rest of the Expo line. By the end of this year, you can do a one seat trip straight from East LA to Santa Monica!
That's awesome news! We'll definitely check it out once it's done. The Little Tokyo area is convenient for us and being able to do a one-seat trip is amazing!
So interesting. Whenever we go to LA taking the metro is almost never an option we consider. Not because we don’t want to but because we don’t think of it. I remember taking it once and it was super clean and never delayed and not super crowded. So different from NYC. We gotta take the metro more
On June 16, 2023, L.A.'s Regional Connector, a brand new light rail connection in downtown, will unify the Long Beach Line (the Blue Line now known as the A Line) and parts of the Pasadena Line (northern part of the Gold Line now known [for now] as the L Line) and the Santa Monica Line (the Expo Line) and parts of the East L.A. Line (part of the southern part of the Gold Line [L Line]) to become two full length transit lines to unify two longer transit lines (one of them a much longer A Line from Long Beach to Azusa) to become the longest light rail line in the world.
Lots of people in LA don’t even know there’s a sizable rail network and torture themselves with driving everywhere! And the network is getting bigger for the Olympics!
To @@paulz4667 and other doubters, Metro is still a work in progress. As mentioned in a previous reply, on June 16, the Regional Connector will finally open, uniting the A and E Lines, and two separate halves of the L Line, to become two of the longest rail lines, one of which (A Line) becoming the longest light rail line in the world. In the future, there'll be an expanded D Line (formerly the Purple Line), with additional destinations including the museums around the Miracle Mile (in 2024) and UCLA (by 2027), and, at last, the Metro will travel to LAX Airport and the K Line traveling to the airport, the E Line and the C Line (by before the 2028 Olympics).
@@martincruz8319 I'm not doubting I saw the construction there's 20 plus workers when I caught the Amtrak but it's a big job. This is La mistake from decades ago
I hope they finish the regional connector sooner rather than later. I would be able to take the gold line straight to Santa Monica with no transfers, then maybe actually take it in for work lol
The Metro Regional Connector opens in a few weeks. It'll connect Santa Monica to the San Gabriel Valley in a one-seat ride. It would be super cool if you did a video about that!
Love it! ❤ I've been going to LA more frequently and have been wanting to ride the metro but didn't know how/where to pay my fare. I went to Berlin, Germany last August and I fell in love with their public transit system.
Couldn't you have still taken the Gold Line from Atlantic? I thought they had like a shuttle or something to get you to Union Station since the Little Tokyo station is closed.
@@FunkMasterSleck there’s a huge parking lot at the Culver City station and I think it’s still free. It’s so easy to get and from downtown. I’ve used it to get from Santa Monica to Pasadena which involved making connections at Seventh Street and Union Station. Still it beats driving.
This is a great question, from the times that we've been, there's usually so many people coming and going, it doesn't seem or feel too sketchy. For us, we usually try and get back before it gets too late (before 8pm) and we usually go from the Union Station side, towards the east on the Gold Line.

You are so welcome. I lived in the Long Beach area near Cabrillo High School. I would take the Red line to Holywood/Highlands, I use to take a bus beyond Encino and go to a very nice Mall in the Canyons. There is a transit center which takes you to a Thousand Oaks. I now live in Honolulu, HI. I enjoyed your video.
@@alfredatrawick649 aah Encino + beyond in the valley is great but the traffic is brutal. Definitely a great way to get out there with transit. We love Honolulu! it might be the only city where we take the bus anywhere 😆
From Union Station, take the red line, get off at 7th street/Metro Center, then walk to the Exposition Line to transfer. Make sure you’re getting on the exposition line and not the metro blue line that does to Long Beach. If you see the Metro Blue (long beach), you’ll need to go up stairs and walk across to the other side for the Exposition Line (Santa Monica)

Yes! Completely different and not crowded, pretty much ever 😂 Also good for events like concerts, NBA games and now NFL games.

For real 10000%! We would probably take it all the time if that was the case right now haha.
@@PeterLisaKim It's supposed to open next year.
There is a cheaper underground parking structure on the east side of Union Station (patsaouras plaza). I believe it's $8 there.
This is an awesome tip, thank you!
Try walking around Skid Row district and get out unharmed.
There's a free shuttle bus between the last open station on the Gold/L Line East LA portion (Pico/Aliso) and Union Station.
Thank you for letting us know about the shuttle!!!

This was great! Thank you so much. Visiting from Australia in two weeks so this is very handy as we don’t really want to drive in LA 🙏🏽

It seems like they're making it easier with the app now! We haven't used it yet but that should make buying fare and using the card easier 😆
I would’ve left my car at home instead of parking at Union Station!
Looks great!

We had no idea they had a shuttle! Thanks for the heads up!
Since moving to LA I've alway dealt with traffic. This is something I need to experience.
100%! Especially heading to the west side where there's pretty much always traffic no matter what 😭

So many people on the pier
It's normally very crowded but still a fun place for both tourists and locals 😃
Does union station get sketchy at night? How long do you give yourself to get back to the station before everything closes?

How are you comparing LA to NYC to HK? These are vertical cities. LA is over 400 sq miles
How does this journey feel in reality? I have to take this as I can't drive so no car. Is it painfully slow!?
Not slow at all! It’s way quicker than sitting in traffic.
How long was the train ride?
It's been a while but we recall it was a little more than 1 hour with all the stops 👍
@PeterLisaKim I took the bus and it's about the same length. 1 hour 15 minutes.
